Book excerpt: Especially in industrial countries the portion of elderly people is growing in many societies. Their needs are more intensified than the demands of younger people in many aspects. Companies need the right tools (e.g. market research methods for elderly people) to detect these needs, preferences, and demands of elderly people. Samah Abu-Assab verifies two existing research methods and suggests a new one for determining the preferences of elderly people. The new method seems to be promising and adequate for the elderly target group.

Book excerpt: This book reflects the recent developments while providing a comprehensive introduction to the Internet of things (IoT) and cloud technologies in transforming aging. IoT has its origins in device connectivity, whereas the cloud grew out of computer science. They can be viewed as two facets of the same field, and together they have undergone substantial development over the past ten years. This book is aimed at advanced undergraduates or first-year research students, as well as researchers and practitioners, and assumes no previous knowledge of IoT and cloud concepts. Basics of computer applications and concepts are required. Some familiarity with gerontechnology would be helpful, though not essential, as this book includes a self-contained introduction to how technology is transforming elderly care and eHealth management. This book aims to give references that offer more detail than is possible here and hopefully provide an entry point into a series of technologies that can improve the quality of life for the elderly. The book includes several case studies explaining how each piece of technology works and its benefits to the elderly. This book is also considered as a simple guide to the technologies for the elderly to use in the community.

Book excerpt: This book investigates in detail large-scale group decision-making (LSGDM) problem, which has gradually evolved from the traditional group decision-making problem and has attracted more and more attention in the age of big data. Pursuing a holistic approach, the book establishes a fundamental framework for LSGDM with uncertain and behavioral considerations. To address the behavioral uncertainty and complexity of large groups of decision-makers, this book mainly focuses on new solutions of LSGDM problems using the interval type-2 fuzzy uncertainty theory and social network analysis techniques, including the exploration of uncertain clustering analysis, the consideration of social relationships, especially trust relationships, the construction of consensus evolution networks, etc. The book is intended for researchers and postgraduates who are interested in complex group decision-making in the new media era. Authors also investigate the similar features between LSGDM problems and group recommendations to study the applications of LSGDM methods. After reading this book, readers will have a new understanding of the LSGDM study under the real complicated context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selling products used to be the standard way of doing business. Traditionally, it is left to the user to transform the purchase of a product into something that fulfils effectively a final-user need. Today, two streams of research – business management and sustainability – normally with very distinct perspectives on the world, have surprisingly converged to form a common conclusion: selling products is old-fashioned business. Companies should switch their focus to selling need fulfilment, satisfaction, or experiences. Or, in other words, selling integrated solutions or product-services. The business management literature argues that, by focusing on the integrated, final-client needs, and delivering integrated solutions fulfilling these needs, companies will be able to improve their position in the value chain, enhance added value of their offering, and improve their innovation potential. In a business world where many products are becoming equally well-performing commodities, this strategy is one of the ways to avoid a sheer competition on price – a type of competition that Europe never can win with emerging and low-cost economies such as China. In that sense, product-services can mean new business for old Europe. The sustainability knowledge stream argues that need-focused solutions could be inherently more sustainable than products. Product-services could offer the value of use instead of the product itself and decrease the environmental load in two ways. First, companies offering the service would have all the incentives to make the (product-)system efficient, as they get paid by the result. Second, consumers would be encouraged to alter their behaviour as they gain insight into all the costs involved with the use. Until today, the connections and interchange between the two research streams have been quite limited. The question of whether product-services truly are the avenue to a sustainable world is still under discussion. This book aims to develop a systematic view on this issue. The potential of product-services to enhance competitiveness and contribute to sustainable development prompted the EU to invest heavily in the theme under the EU's 5th Framework Programme (FP5; 1997-2002). A variety of research and development projects in the field were supported under the umbrella of the Sustainable Product Development Network (SusProNet). These included MEPSS (Methodology Product Service Systems); Home Services; HiCS (Highly Customerised Solutions); Prosecco (Product-Service Co-design); and Innopse (Innovation Studio and exemplary developments for Product-Service). The projects were undertaken by a mix of European research institutions and companies including Orange, Philips and Nokia. Some of these projects focused on developing methods that could help industries change their output from a product to a service. Others focused on the development of new product-services or solutions (HiCS, Prosecco, Innopse), and yet others tried to analyze under which circumstances product-services are likely to be implemented and accepted by consumers (Home Services). One project focused on dissemination of the concept to SMEs (Lean Services). Other projects focused purely on new product-service development, such as Brainfridge (an intelligent fridge managing its supply chain), ASP-NET (application service providers), Protex (intelligent enzymes) and IPSCON (receivers for wireless telephones). New Business for Old Europe brings together the key outputs from all of these groups to present a state-of-the-art collection on product-service development, prospects and implications for competitiveness and sustainability. The book has a number of aims. First, it attempts to bridge the gap between business and sustainability literature to lead to a better-founded understanding of the business drivers for embarking on product-service development, and its relation with sustainability and competitiveness. Second, the book reviews the large amount of studies that have developed toolkits, methods and approaches that can support marketers, product developers and strategists in business to develop product-services, selects the best-practice approaches and analyses any gaps. Third, the book examines what opportunities there are for product-service development in a variety of key areas including base materials, information and communication technologies, offices, food and households. Each chapter in this section discusses the area, developments that will stimulate or hinder the market opportunities for product-services, product-service examples, and typical implementation challenges for product-services in that area. These chapters serve as a quick introduction for companies interested in developing product-services in a specific area. Fourth, the book translates all the lessons into suggested approaches for product-service development by companies. Annexes include a lightweight "product-service development manual" and an alphabetical list of useful underlying tools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexuality is the manner in which we undergo and exhibit sexuality. It includes emotions, wants, behaviors, and identities, as well as a variety of forms of physical contact or stimulation. Intimacy is a sense of togetherness and connection in a relationship, which may or may not include physical contact. Aging creates possibilities for older individuals to reinterpret what sexuality and intimacy entail for them as a result of life changes. Certain older individuals want both a sexual and an intimate partnership, while others are fine with either, and some may opt to reject both sorts of partnership. Normal aging also causes physiological changes that might interfere with the capacity for and enjoyment of sexual activity. Our bodies, such as our size, skin, and muscular condition, shift as we age. Certain older individuals are unhappy with their deteriorating bodies. They may be concerned that their lover no longer finds them appealing. Intimacy and a satisfying sex life may be hindered by physical issues brought on by health disorders as well as by stress and anxiety. Men and women have different sexual problems. Erectile Dysfunction, or ED, occurs when a man has difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection. In certain cases, ED is caused by prostate cancer therapies, such as prostatectomy (a procedure in which the prostate is surgically removed in its entirety or in part). The condition is also caused by other health issues, such as excessive blood sugar, heart disease, or pelvic trauma. Notwithstanding the transformations brought on by natural aging, sexuality remains a vital aspect of our lifestyles as we age. Sexual health and function are essential elements of healthy aging. Sexual activity is connected with superior psychological health, self-esteem, marriage quality, as well as personal well-being, whereas its absence is linked to a worse standard of living. Considering the significance of sexual function and sexual well-being in evaluating healthy aging, as well as the inadequate knowledge of urological health among elderly people, this research topic highlights some of the key urological health aspects relevant to the journeys and mental or medical consequences of healthy aging, psychological wellbeing, and sexuality. Among the broad questions of interest are the following: - The experiences of older adults who identify as having a urological disorder or a mental disorder - Sexual health and sexual function/dysfunction in older adults - Correlation between psychological disorder and urological health among older adults - Culture/sociological discussion between psychological distress and healthy aging among older adults - Addressing sexual function and sexual well-being and healthy aging - Case studies of effective practice - Specific sexual orientation issues among older adults with urological disorders - Incorporating a patient care address for older adults with urological illnesses into the community We are thus seeking innovative research papers, review articles, hypothesis and theory pieces, viewpoint articles, short research report articles, commentary articles, opinion articles, and book reviews. We expect that by combining the ideas of scholars from diverse disciplines or contexts, we will be able to explore the relationship between the significance of sexual function and sexual well-being in defining healthy aging and bridge the knowledge gap in urological health among older adults.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If R&D and innovation in the 1990s were about more internationalization, more corporate entrepreneurship, and more information-integration, then the 2000s have been about consolidating and expanding these trends further: more globalization including the technology mavericks of China and India, more open and inbound innovation integrating external technology providers, and more web- and Intern- enabling of innovation processes by involving R&D contributors regardless of their location. The corporate R&D powerhouses of the 1980s are now mostly history. Even where they survived, they had to yield to corporate efficiency efforts and business-wide integration programs. Still, it would be unfair to belittle them in retrospect as they have found new roles in corporate R&D and innovation n- works. In fact, the very successes of centralized R&D organizations of the 1970s and 1980s made possible the revolution of globalized innovation that we have been witnessing since the 1990s. The first two editions of Managing Global Innovation, published in 1999 and 2000, were testimonials of an increasingly internationalizing world of innovation and R&D. In this third edition of Managing Global Innovation, we have retained the basic structure of two conceptual parts (I and II) and three case study parts (III, IV, V). However, we have greatly revised all chapters, including the final “Imp- cations” chapter (part VI), and incorporated new chapters and cases that illuminate and describe the recent trends in the context of the beginnings of global innovation in the 1980s and 1990s.
