Book excerpt: This monograph presents the still young, but already large and very active interdisciplinary realm of computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) in a systematic and well-balanced way. Besides technical progress also the cultural, social, legal, psychological and economic aspects of CSCW are discussed. The book makes accessible a wealth of information and culminates in the development and detailed discussion of a "Collaboratory" suitable to fulfil the needs of scientific cooperation in Europe. The book addresses CSCW research and development professionals as well as the general scientist interested in CSCW-based scientific cooperation. The bibliography with its more than 600 entries and the subject index are particularly comprehensive and helpful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of important issues form the basis of this book: How can the Information Technology (IT) standardization process, leading to unified products which are needed on the market, be made more efficient? Which current IT standards are of high quality, what factors have led to that high quality, and can those factors be re-created for other IT standards? What improvements to the quality of IT standards are needed? Which organizations should be involved? What permanent changes in the IT standardization scene are necessary? At what point in the evolution of a technology is it appropriate to produce standards? Is strategic planning feasible in the current standardization approach? Diverse disciplines contributed to the findings in this book: computer scientists, standardization leaders and professionals, users and vendors, economists, auditors, software implementors, and communication specialists.

Book excerpt: "User is king" is not a new concept, but it is certainly one that has gathered considerable momentum in the recent years. The driving force are the increasing and relentless pace of competition and the consequent attempts by many companies to keep and improve their marketshare. Since the beginning of ESPRIT Programme in 1984, the Human Computer Interface has been the subject of attention, in terms of technology development and utilisation of those technologies in various applications in the fields of Information Processing Systems, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, and Office and Business Systems. This topic area had been addressed in a number of different perspectives: user modelling, task analysis, cognitive aspects of interaction and assimilation of information, natural language speech and graphics, processing of multisensor information and its presentation, and a wide range of applications in which these technologies are used. In addition to the previous ESPRIT programmes, the specific programme for Information Technology of the European Framework Programme for 1994-1999 has recognised the ever increasing importance of "ease of use" in computer applications. The work programme on Human Comfort and Security is an attempt to address these issues. Its primary objectives are the exploitation of existing knowledge and expertise in usability engineering by integrating methods and tools into coherent toolsets, the generation of improved human computer interface components, demonstrating their application in practice, and widely disseminating the results and promoting the take-up of these technologies.

Book excerpt: The Commission of the European Union, through its Fourth Framework R&D programme is committed to the development of the Information Society. There is no doubt that there will be many radical changes in all aspects of society caused by the far-reaching impact of continuing advances in information and communi cation technologies. Many of these changes cannot be predicted, but that uncer tainty must not stop us from moving forward. The challenge is to ensure that these technologies are put to use in the most beneficial manner, taking fully into account the rich cultural and linguistic backgrounds within the peoples of Europe. We have a duty to ensure that the ultimate end-users of the technology are involved in the development and application of that technology to help shape its use. Without this active involvement, designers will not understand the individual and organisational requirements of the users, and the users will not understand the impact and applicability of the new technology. Failure on either account will lead to a sense of resentment on the part of the users and a lost opportunity to improve the quality of human life. The work, sponsored by the Human Comfort & Security sub-domain of the ESPRIT programme, has a central part to play in the creation of the Information Society, lying as it does at the interface between the technology and the user.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Computer Graphics Metafile deals with the Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM) standard and covers topics ranging from the structure and contents of a metafile to CGM functionality, metafile elements, and real-world applications of CGM. Binary Encoding, Character Encoding, application profiles, and implementations are also discussed. This book is comprised of 18 chapters divided into five sections and begins with an overview of the CGM standard and how it can meet some of the requirements for storage of graphical data within a graphics system or application environment. The reader is then introduced to the practice of using the CGM and the nature of the CGM, its aims, and what is defined in the standard. The following chapters focus on the players, the rules, and the game; the abstract functionality of the CGM; descriptor elements for metafiles and pictures; coordinates, primitives, and attributes; and encodings and implementation considerations. Clear Text Encoding, Binary Encoding, Character Encoding, and application profiles are also explored. The final chapter looks at the use of GKS, GKS-3D, and PHIGS to generate and interpret CGMs. This monograph will be a valuable resource for computer graphics students and professionals as well as software engineers and computer programmers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To understand what we know and be aware of what is to be known is a necessary approach to treating CAD/CAM issues. The challenge for all of us interested in CAD/CAM and engineering data handling is to under stand what we know and what we need to know about today's and tomorrow's technology, to track the explosive development of our field and its broadening range of applications, to sort through the details which compete for our attention, and to perceive underlying trends. A key development in the past year was the rapid and widespread acceptance by all user segments of personal computer-based CAD/CAM workstations, coupled with widespread use of software packages, both those developed for PC-based workstations and others converted from main frame and mini systems for use on PC-based or 32-bit workstations. If this trend continues for a few more years, as much as 900/0 of all design work may be accomplished on advanced versions of PC-based workstations. Many software systems vendors unknown until recently to the PC-based CAD/CAM community have now come to dominate the market-companies such as Autodesk, Chessell-Robocom, Future Net, T&W Systems, P-CAD, Cascade, 4-D Graphics, CADAM, Wang & Hornbuckle, and more than 20 other companies who sell PC-based CAD/CAM software.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2 e This book describes principles, methods and tools that are common to computer applications for design tasks. CAD is considered in this book as a discipline that provides the required know-how in computer hardware and software, in systems analysis and in engineering methodology for specifying, designing, implementing, introducing, and using computer based systems for design purposes. The first chapter gives an impression of the book as a whole, and following chapters deal with the history and the components of CAD, the process aspect of CAD, CAD architecture, graphical devices and systems, CAD engineering methods, CAD data transfer, and application examples. The flood of new developments in the field and the success of the first edition of this book have led the authors to prepare this completely revised, updated and extended second edition. Extensive new material is included on computer graphics, implementation methodology and CAD data transfer; the material on graphics standards is updated. The book is aimed primarily at engineers who design or install CAD systems. It is also intended for students who seek a broad fundamental background in CAD.

Book excerpt: The book addresses scientists and technical experts who have already some background knowledge in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and who want to know more about standardisation in GIS, in particular, the role of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). In addition, the monograph meets the needs of programmers who are involved in implementing ISO 19100 standards and who need a better understanding of the overall structure of the standards. Last, but not least, this richly illustrated book helps readers to better understand the rather abstract ISO documents.
