With the high quality of the proposed papers the Local Organising Committee had a difficult task to make a balanced selection and to control the total number of papers for fitting into the allocated time schedule approved by the Standing Committee of PRADS. Volume I covers design synthesis, production and part of hydrodynamics. Volume II contains the rest of hydrodynamics, and structures and materials.

Globalization of the customer base has resulted in distributed and networked manufacturing systems. However, current design methods are not suitable to address variations in product design, changes in production scale, or variations in product quality necessitated by dynamic changes in the market. Adaptability, operability, and re-configurability are key characteristics that are necessary to address the limitations of the current methods used to design networked manufacturing systems. In recent years, the digital transformation driving Industry 4.0 has had an enormous impact on globally distributed manufacturing. Digitalisation, the integration of digital technology into networked engineered systems, is increasingly being adopted to respond to changes in the market. This is achieved by means of (a) the concurrent design of adaptable systems, (b) addressing flexibility in design parameters, (c) conducting an operability analysis, and (d) employing a reconfiguration strategy to address faults and variances in product quality and re-establish connectivity among the elements in the system. The design of manufacturing systems in the age of Industry 4.0 is addressed in this monograph. The authors introduce the concept of a ‘smart platform’ and a computational framework for the digitalization of networked manufacturing systems. They also suggest how the framework and techniques in this monograph are applicable beyond the manufacturing domain for architecting networked engineered systems in other industries such as chemical processes and health care, that are being transformed through the adoption of the Industry 4.0 construct.

Book excerpt: Confronting Climate Uncertainty in Water Resources Planning and Project Design describes an approach to facing two fundamental and unavoidable issues brought about by climate change uncertainty in water resources planning and project design. The first is a risk assessment problem. The second relates to risk management. This book provides background on the risks relevant in water systems planning, the different approaches to scenario definition in water system planning, and an introduction to the decision-scaling methodology upon which the decision tree is based. The decision tree is described as a scientifically defensible, repeatable, direct and clear method for demonstrating the robustness of a project to climate change. While applicable to all water resources projects, it allocates effort to projects in a way that is consistent with their potential sensitivity to climate risk. The process was designed to be hierarchical, with different stages or phases of analysis triggered based on the findings of the previous phase. An application example is provided followed by a descriptions of some of the tools available for decision making under uncertainty and methods available for climate risk management. The tool was designed for the World Bank but can be applicable in other scenarios where similar challenges arise.

In the first four chapters, it provides a detailed account of the history of the development of 3D resources for visualisation. Following on from this will be three major case studies which examine a variety of educational perspectives in the creation of resources. One centres around neuropsychiatric education, one is based on gaming technology and its application in a university biology curriculum, and the last of these chapters examines how ultrasound can be used in the modern day anatomical curriculum. The next three chapters focus on a complex area of anatomy, and helps to create an engaging resource of materials focussed on craniofacial anatomy and applications. The first of these chapters examines how skulls can be digitised in the creation of an educational and training package, with excellent hints and tips. The second of these chapters has a real-world application related to forensic anatomy which examines skulls and soft tissue landmarks in the creation of a database for Cretan skulls, comparing it to international populations. The last three chapters present technical perspetives on visual perception and visualisation. By detailing visual perception, visual analytics and examination of multi-modal, multi-parametric data, these chapters help to understand the true scientific meaning of visualisation. The work presented here can be accessed by a wide range of users from faculty and students involved in the design and development of these processes, to those developing tools and techniques to enable visualisation in the sciences.
