Book excerpt: Speciality corns viz. sweetcorn, popcorn, babycorn, high oilcorn etc. assume tremendous market potential not only in India but in international market as well. Among the different types of maize, popcorn [Zea mays L. var. everta (Sturtev.) L.H. Bailey] is one of the major ones, which is popular as a snack food in many parts of world. Its kernels are composed of hard starch, when heated, swell and burst. Because of low sugar, fat and calories, it is good food for health. Groundnut-wheat is the pre-dominant cropping system of the Saurashtra region of Gujarat. High input cost and labour requirement along with low market price are major constraints in wheat cultivation. Being a C4 plant suited better under the climate change condition and photo-insensitive crop, popcorn seems to be the best alternate crop in place of wheat, which needs to be tested under south Saurashtra agro-climatic conditions. Weed infestation is a major problem in rabi popcorn. Wider row spacing and liberal use of irrigation and fertilizers lead to more growth of weeds. So it is imperative to evolve weed management practice.

Book excerpt: Among all the cereals, productivity of maize is highest accounts 18 per cent acreage and 25 per cent production in the world. Maize occupies an area of 66 lakh hectares producing about 133 lakh tonnes annually with the productivity of 2015 kg ha-1 in India. In agriculture, weeds cause more damage (45%) as compared to insects, pests and diseases but due to hidden loss by weeds in crop production, it has not drawn much attention of agriculturists. Weed problem is one of the major barriers responsible for low productivity of maize because weeds compete with the crop for moisture, nutrients, space and light. Moreover, they increase production cost, harbour insects-pests and plant diseases, decreases quality of farm produce and reduce the value of the land. Weed control through use of herbicides assumes a greater significance due to accessibility and selective and quick action. Herbicides use in cropland provides weed free condition from very beginning, increases crop yield, improves crop quality and reduces production cost.

Book excerpt: The updated edition of the classic, fundamental book on weed science Weed Science provides a detailed examination of the principles of integrated weed management with important details on how chemical herbicides work and should be used. This revised Fourth Edition addresses recent developments affecting weed science. These include the increased use of conservation-tillage systems, environmental concerns about the runoff of agrochemicals, soil conservation, crop biotechnology, resistance of weeds and crops to herbicides, weed control in nonagricultural settings and concerns regarding invasive plants, wetland restoration, and the need for a vastly improved understanding of weed ecology. Current management practices are covered along with guidance for selecting herbicides and using them effectively. To serve as a more efficient reference, herbicides are cross-listed by chemical and brand name and grouped by mechanism of action and physiological effect rather than chemical structure. In addition, an introduction to organic chemistry has been added to familiarize readers with organic herbicides. Also included are guidelines on weed-control practices for specific crops or situations, such as small grains, row crops, horticultural crops, lawns and turf, range land, brush, and aquatic plant life. Generously supplemented with 300 drawings, photographs, and tables, Weed Science is an essential book for students taking an introductory course in weed science, as well as a reference for agricultural advisors, county agents, extension specialists, and professionals throughout the agrochemical industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant improvement has shifted its focus from yield, quality and disease resistance to factors that will enhance commerical export, such as early maturity, shelf life and better processing quality. Conventional plant breeding methods aiming at the improvement of a self-pollinating crop, such as wheat, usually take 10-12 years to develop and release of the new variety. During the past 10 years, significant advances have been made and accelerated methods have been developed for precision breeding and early release of crop varieties. This work summarizes concepts dealing with germplasm enhancement and development of improved varieties based on innovative methodologies that include doubled haploidy, marker assisted selection, marker assisted background selection, genetic mapping, genomic selection, high-throughput genotyping, high-throughput phenotyping, mutation breeding, reverse breeding, transgenic breeding, shuttle breeding, speed breeding, low cost high-throughput field phenotyping, etc. It is an important reference with special focus on accelerated development of improved crop varieties.
