Book excerpt: The IVBSS program is a four-year, two-phase project to design and evaluate an integrated crash warning system for forward collision, lateral drift, lane-change merge, and curve speed warnings for both light vehicles and heavy trucks. This report, covering human factors research and DVI development in the first two years of the program, describes five laboratory studies, four driving simulator studies, and two onroad pilot tests conducted to assess a variety of river-interface concepts related to the development of integrated warning systems. Selected major findings are as follows: 1) For the vehicles selected, warning sounds should be at least 80 dB(A) in the 1 to 5 KHz range. 2) Auditory warning durations should be less than the expected mean response time. 3) No approaches to warning combination (single, dual-simple, dual-hybrid, or multiple warnings) led to noticeably better driver responses, though drivers favored the multiple warning approach least, and for a variety of reasons a dual-warning approach is recommended for IVBSS. 4) Delays between 150 and 300 ms are acceptable for the LDW algorithm. 5) No single prioritization scheme for warnings (simultaneous, priority interrupt, or delayed presentation) is recommended based on the findings from a simulator study.Extended pilot testing is likely to suggest minor refinements to the DVIs developed here. In the pilot tests that have been conducted, all of the warning systems operated as planned, with some changes required to reduce false alarm rates. Overall, drivers reported IVBSS to be intuitive and easy to use. Most drivers stated warnings were received with about the right frequency, and in general the warnings were not distracting. Results from the laboratory and simulator experiments, in particular, are likely to assist future developers of driver-vehicle interfaces for integrated crash warning systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents the plan for conducting a field operational test (FOT) of the Integrated Vehicle-Based Safety Systems (IVBSS) program. The plan describes the work that will be performed by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute using 16 passenger cars and 10 commercial trucks equipped with an integrated crash avoidance system. The purpose of the IVBSS program is to evaluate the suitability of a state-of-the-art integrated crash warning system for widespread deployment in the U.S. passenger car and commercial truck fleet. Both platforms have three integrated crash-warning subsystem systems (forward crash, lateral drift, and lane-change/merge warnings); the light-vehicle platform also has a fourth subsystem, curve-speed warning. For the light vehicle portion of the FOT, lay drivers will operate test vehicles in place of their own personal cars for a period of six weeks. Commercial-truck drivers from a commercial fleet will operate heavy trucks in place of the Class 8 tractors they normally use as their work vehicles. All vehicles will be instrumented to capture information regarding the driving environment, driver activity, system behavior, and vehicle kinematics. Driver information will be captured through a series of subjective questionnaires, focus groups, and debriefing sessions to determine driver acceptance and to gain insight for improving future versions of integrated crash warning systems.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the Integrated Vehicle-Based Safety System (IVBSS) project is to evaluate the potential safety benefits and driver acceptance of an integrated set of crash-warning technologies installed on both heavy truck and light vehicle platforms. IVBSS is an integrated set of technologies that is intended to help the driver avoid road-departure, rear-end, and lane-change crashes by providing occasional crash alerts and advisories to enhance the driver’s awareness of the driving situation. This document proposes functional requirements for the system to be developed and field-tested on the light vehicle platform. These requirements are generated solely for the system created within this project, and are not intended to be prescriptive for integrated crash systems developed outside the project. The light vehicle platform encompasses passenger vehicles including sedans, sport-utility vehicles, light trucks, minivans, and vans. The IVBSS on the light vehicle platform addresses the following crash types: • Road departures due to unintended lateral drift, • Road departures due to travel through curves at excessive speeds, • Rear-end crashes, and• Lane-change and merge crashes due to unsafe lane movements.

Book excerpt: This report presents results from a series of on-road verification tests performed to determine the readiness of a prototype integrated warning system to advance to field testing, as well as to identify areas of system performance that should be improved prior to the start of the field test planned for 2009. Data was collected from tests conducted on public roads using a 2007 Honda Accord equipped with the prototype safety system. The system provides forward crash warning (FCW), lane departure warning (LDW), curve speed warning (CSW), and lane change/merge (LCM) functions, managed by an arbitration function that addresses multiple crash threats. The objectives of the on-road tests were to drive the test vehicle in an uncontrolled driving environment to measure the system's susceptibility to nuisance alerts, assess alerts in perceived crash situations, and evaluate system availability.

Book excerpt: "Abstract: This report presents the methodology and results of the independent evaluation of safety applications for passenger vehicles in the 2012-2013 Safety Pilot Model Deployment, part of the United States Department of Transportation’s Intelligent Transportation Systems research program. In 2012, the pilot model deployed approximately 2,800 vehicles equipped with designated short-range communication-based vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure technology in a real-world driving environment. The goals of the independent evaluation were to characterize the capability, assess unintended consequences, and gauge driver acceptance of the V2V safety applications. The evaluation is based on naturalistic driving by 127 participants who drove passenger vehicles with fully integrated V2V communication systems for 6 months each. Additionally, 293 participants drove passenger cars with aftermarket communication systems for 12 months each. The 127 integrated-vehicle and 293 aftermarket-device participant’s vehicles were equipped with a suite of V2V safety applications that issued alerts to participants in potential crash scenarios. The results of the analysis suggest that V2V safety applications work in a real-world environment and issue valid alerts in driving conflicts, but improvements in their ability to correctly differentiate imminent threats from various normal driving situations are needed so as to reduce nuisance warnings. Results from the model deployment will help shape future research direction."--Technical report documentation page.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on emerging technologies in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) namely efficient information dissemination between vehicles, infrastructures, pedestrians and public transportation systems. It covers the state-of-the-art of Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), with centralized and decentralized (Peer-to-Peer) communication architectures, considering several application scenarios. With a detailed treatment of emerging communication paradigms, including cross networking and distributed algorithms. Unlike most of the existing books, this book presents a multi-layer overview of information dissemination systems, from lower layers (MAC) to high layers (applications). All those aspects are investigated considering the use of mobile devices, such as smartphones/tablets and embedded systems, i.e. technologies that during last years completely changed the current market, the user expectations, and communication networks. The presented networking paradigms are supported and validated by means of extensive simulative analysis and real field deployments in different application scenarios. This book represents a reference for professional technologist, postgraduates and researchers in the area of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs), wireless communication and distributed systems.
