Book excerpt: Following on from Integrated Models Volume 1: Policy Analysis of Transportation and Lane Use (Routledge Library Editions, 2006), this book bridges the gap between the scholars and the practitioners of transportation and land-use modelling. First published in 1991, chapters discuss model-calibration and model-solution problems, describe a series of numerical and policy analyses, and propose potential directions for location and land-use research. This reissue will be of particular value to undergraduate and postgraduate geography students with an interest in integrated urban modelling; in particular, the research conducted in the field over the past two decades.

Book excerpt: Describe how transit agencies, metropolitan planning organizations, and state DOTs can act today to initiate or expand their analytical tools for integrated land use-transportation planning. The Guidelines are intended for the general reader having an interest in the effects of transit on land use. The Guidelines describe currently available integrated models, the characteristics of an "ideal" integrated model, and steps that a planning organization should take in order to support and expand such modeling capability.

Book excerpt: A wide range of books on urban systems models are available today for the student of urban planning, geography, and economics. There are few, if any, books, however, that deal with integrated urban systems modeling from the operational viewpoint. The term "integrated" is used here in the same sense as the "general equilibrium", in contrast to such approaches as "sequential" or "partial equilibrium". In fact, the main thesis of this book is that the characteristics of ur ban activity that best distinguish it from rural activity are (1) the intensive use of urban land and (2) urban congestion. On this basis, models that are introduced in this book are three- dimensional in character and produce urban land use configurations with explicit optimal density of urban pro duction activities along with optimal levels of transportation congestion. It is also assumed that both public and private sectors play significant roles in shaping urban forms, structures, and functions in mixed economic systems. From this viewpoint, models developed in this book address two integrated decision-making procedures: one by the public sector, which provides urban infrastructure and public services, and the other one by the private sector, which uses provided infrastructure and public services in pursuing parochial interests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how transportation models can play a role in a changing transport planning and policy making context. Most models are rooted in decades of development work and are geared to offer value-free, academic and explicit knowledge to transport planning experts. However, planning practice has changed dramatically over the years, resulting in a less technical rational view on the use of such knowledge – especially so in early, strategy making phases. More and more complex policy goals, integration of a wide area of other policy domains, a wider, ever-changing and much more mixed group of planning participants and much more focus on ‘wicked problems’. The book maps how this influences the effectiveness of transport modelling exercises and explores several state-of-the-art implementations. This book was published as a special issue of Transport Reviews.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban and Regional Planning Series, Volume 13: Transportation Planning, Policy and Analysis is a review of selected policies affecting the administration, urban transportation, and proposals regarding transport improvements. The book discusses the inter-relationship of transport policy and analysis of transportation planning. The text outlines the development of transportation planning considering the constraints placed upon studies made in the transportation system. The author describes the planning process as evolving, with the nature of the problem changing along with the passing of time. The author reviews the administrative framework and the polices affecting urban traffic and public transports. He evaluates the policy-decision mechanisms influenced by ""maximization subject to constraint."" The author then presents some mathematical simulation models of transport, and then emphasizes that actual testing and experimentation of a model are needed to overcome any cardinal weaknesses. The book also cites the SELNEC and Tyneside studies where their major component is on road expenditure, which studies regarded as not very cost-effective. The author then cites legislations and development proposals that transportation plans should be integrated with land use planning and traffic systems. The author also discusses why developments in transport planning analysis is a political decision. City administrators, officials of traffic and engineering departments and bureaus, civil engineers, and urban developers will find this book of interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated transport and land use models are an increasingly used tool for evaluation of urban policy and large scale projects. Although there is a well-built theoretical background supporting the existing models, there are few exhaustive descriptions of the methodological implications and implementation efforts behind these tools. This handbook describes the modeling effort, methodological contributions, and results of the Sustain City project. Sustain City, financed by the European Union, implemented integrated microsimulation models for European cities, generating a quantitative tool for policy evaluation, specially focused on sustainability issues. The book describes the implementation of an improved, UrbanSim-based platform for three European cities: Brussels, Paris, and Zurich. The analysis is focused on the methodological contributions that resulted from the modeling effort and the practical aspects of microsimulation models as policy evaluation tools.
