Drosophila suzukii has rapidly expanded its range and is now found in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. The capability of D. suzukii to attack intact ripening fruit, a unique trait among drosophilids, makes it a formidable economic threat to fruit crop production regions, including the sweet cherry industry in the United States. Adult flies oviposit into the skin of fruit and larvae consequently damage fruit by feeding internally, rendering it unmarketable. Pest management tactics for fruit crops within D. suzukii's host range are dominated by chemically intensive prophylactic control methods to mitigate damage for which there is nearly zero tolerance. Since its arrival to present, research has been aimed at developing management strategies that are less chemical-dependent, including cultural and mechanical approaches. Within the trapping and monitoring framework of integrated pest management (IPM), commercial lures, baits and traps were tested in commercial orchards to evaluate their efficacy in selectivity and performance. I evaluated the potential for attracticides to be added to the IPM toolbox, a more selective method of chemical control. In a chemical-intensive management system, residues of insecticides currently in use were tested for residual control and route of exposure differences. Lastly, attraction behavior modulation by yeast species Hanseniaspora uvarum (Niehaus) was characterized for effects on flight and copulation of D. suzukii. These findings show that D. suzukii behavior is influenced by H. uvarum, which provide background information for further behavioral studies. Components of this dissertation add to the current literature of this relatively new invasive pest.

Successful tactics will be integrated into an IPM program for management of SWD in southern blueberries.

Book excerpt: Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae) are small invasive flies that in the past five years (2009-2014) invaded berry and stone fruit production regions in Europe and the Americas. Evolutionary adaptations, biological traits, and anthropogenic factors have contributed to its current status as a global pest. Females oviposit eggs into ripe fruit. Eggs develop into larvae that feed on fruit interiors, rendering fruit unmarketable. Growers currently prevent infestation by targeting adult D. suzukii with broad-spectrum insecticides multiple times during the harvest season. Aside from environmental and non-target impacts of this intensive management strategy, growers are faced with other challenges, such as fruit knockdown from sprayers, abiding by insecticide restricted entry and preharvest intervals, disrupting current integrated pest management (Southwood and Way 1970) programs, and increased input costs. Pest activity levels and movement were tested in a field mark-capture study with previously evaluated and inexpensive protein markers. Results confirmed high adult D. suzukii activity and movement from surrounding non-crop hosts such as 'Himalaya' blackberry into nearby susceptible raspberry. Systemic markers are another method to test pest ecology hypotheses that protein markers cannot help answer. Albeit more expensive than protein marking, markers such as the trace element, rubidium, and stable isotope, 15N, are readily absorbed by plants. In a greenhouse study, both markers were detected in adults, from larvae that fed on enriched strawberry fruits; however, 15N was highly persistent in adults after 14 days compared to the rapidly decaying rubidium. Given D. suzukii's highly mobile nature and propensity to use non-crop areas surrounding susceptible crop as overwintering sites or refugia, reduced insecticide application strategies were tested from 2011-2013. Only the border of crop areas was treated with insecticides while leaving the center untreated. Multiple border sprays during two blueberry harvest seasons were made to create a 'wall of insecticides' and prevent invasion of D. suzukii from surrounding non-crop areas. In addition, alternate row (middle) sprays was tested, where one side of two rows was treated with each sprayer pass. The untreated side of each row is thought to provide a refuge for natural enemies. Subsequent sprays were applied on the previously untreated rows. Multiple raspberry sites were treated with this method during three harvest seasons. These reduced insecticide application methods managed D. suzukii adults and larvae as well as complete field applications (border sprays in a low pressure situation), mitigated grower insecticide application challenges (e.g., application time, fruit knockdown in border sprays depending on grower practice), conserved post-harvest natural enemy populations, and reduced input costs. These methods could be easily integrated into a pest management program if associated risks (e.g., pest pressure) are accounted for.

Unlike most Drosophila species, D. suzukii has an enlarged and heavily sclerotized ovipositor that allows female flies to lay eggs in fruits before they are fully ripened and, in most cases, before fruits are harvestable. Initial efforts at mitigating damage have relied on chemical pesticides to reduce D. suzukii populations in crop areas; however, on-going research efforts have focused on more environmentally sustainable integrated pest management alternatives. This thesis investigates aspects of D. suzukii behaviour and physiology that promoted its successful global invasion. Chapter one discusses the role of behavioural and physiological plasticity in giving D. suzukii an ecological edge during introduction and successful invasion. Chapter two investigates D. suzukii host selection behaviour and preference among commercial fruits and novel native fruits in a boreal environment. I investigated the fruit characters thought to play a role in host choice, including fruit sweetness (brix), fruit acidity (pH), and fruit firmness (penetration force [gfmm2]). Based on D. suzukii behaviour observed in field settings, the investigation was expanded to include the role of fruit and foliage colour in host selection. Additionally, we beta-tested a citizen science initiative to identify native fruit species at risk and to confirm the range limits of D. suzukii in Atlantic Canada. Chapter three further explores colour preference and use of colour by D. suzukii as attraction cues, first as cues to differentiate among fruits of different ripeness stages, and second as visual targets for potential use in monitoring traps. Chapter four investigates D. suzukii physiological sensitivity and behavioural activity to odorants associated with fruits and foliage, and odorants known to be important to other Drosophila species. An iterative process of laboratory and field trials was used to test individual odorant compounds and odorant blends in combination with results of colour preference testing to improve trapping efficacy. Given the behavioural and physiological plasticity of D. suzukii, trials were conducted among different fruit crops and growing environments. Chapter five synthesizes lessons learned about D. suzukii behaviour and preferences to make recommendations for effective monitoring traps for blueberry and raspberry crop systems.

They have caused significant damages to the berry and stone fruit industries due to the female's ability to oviposit directly into mesocarp of soft-skinned fruit. Control is primarily obtained through calendar spray programs composed of broad spectrum insecticides, which are applied at weekly or shorter intervals. These intensive insecticide regimens paired with D. suzukii's high fecundity and short generation time has introduced the potential of insecticide resistance, especially in organic cropping systems where the number of insecticide classes are severely restricted. While there is an emphasis on grower training to ensure chemical rotation, the options for effective control are so limited that resistance management is difficult. Thus, this thesis explores alternative D. suzukii management strategies to reduce the current dependency on chemical management. Post-harvest crop sanitation strategies are a form of cultural control that involve the disposal of infested fruits and any ripe, overripe, and decomposing fruit that can act as a reproductive host. Burying and composting were identified as effective disposal methods for D. suzukii susceptible fruits. Burying D. suzukii infested fruit wastes 24 cm underground reduced adult emergence by 97%. Likewise, composting fruit waste with 25% chicken manure reduced D. suzukii's reproductive success > 95%. Integrating these cultural control tactics into existing management programs will help to restore IPM in D. suzukii susceptible cropping systems.
