Download or read book Local Government, Gender and Integrated Development Planning written by A. Todes and published by HSRC Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the South African National Gender Policy guidelines, this thorough analysis explores the extent to which integrated development plans of local municipalities uphold women’s rights as stated in the South African constitution. Based on a project carried out in KwaZulu-Natal from 2004 to 2006, this in-depth research considers the difficulties posed to South African women who wish to meaningfully participate in local government because of entrenched patriarchy in their communities. This exhaustive study also stimulates discussion on how to advance gender equality in developing countries within the context of decentralization.
Book Synopsis Governance in the New South Africa by : Guy C. Z. Mhone
Download or read book Governance in the New South Africa written by Guy C. Z. Mhone and published by Juta and Company Ltd. This book was released on 2003 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major challenges confronting South Africa since the advent of non-racial multiparty democracy have been the need to promote democratic governance, economic growth, global competitiveness, and to improve the standard of living of its people, especially the previously disadvantaged majority Black population. These challenges have coincided with the ascendancy of globalisation with its attendant social, economic and political imperatives, all of which have consequences for governance and development at the national level, not least in emerging economies like South Africa. This important book assesses the implications of global imperatives for the nature, capacity, character and scope of democratic governance and the pursuit of equitable development in the new South Africa. A major conclusion is that the implementation of domestic economic reforms predicated on market fundamentalism, with its dominant logic and paradigm of globalisation and economic management, is incompatible and irreconcilable with the quest for democratic governance and equitable development. The contributors contend that such an approach reproduces a substantively undemocratic and inequitable society. "Governance in the New South Africa" concludes by offering some considerations related to how substantive democracy and equitable development may be promoted in South Africa on the basis of democratic governance and developmentalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "Green City" has many different meanings to different people. There is no universal solution that can be applied to every city. Adaptable, responsive, and innovative solutions that differ from one place to another enable Green Cities to emerge in various forms and enable us to recognize the variation and dynamism of cities. Green Development considers how to improve and manage the overall quality and health of water, air, and land in urban spaces; its correlation with hinterlands and wider systems; and the resultant benefits derived by both the environment and residents. This tool kit is a reference for Asian Development Bank staff, consultants, and city leaders that introduces key concepts of Green City development and identifies crosscutting issues that help in designing urban programs to support city development in a green and sustainable manner. Book Synopsis Land and Water Management in Southern Africa by : Calvin Nhira
Download or read book Land and Water Management in Southern Africa written by Calvin Nhira and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2008 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and its Member States are making renewed efforts to revive agriculture in the region. Given that much of it is water-stressed, appropriate and sustainable land and water management practices are vital to achieving this objective. Recognising this, SADC's Land and Water Management Applied Research and Training Programme has convened two scientific symposiums. Held in Lilongwe, Malawi, in February 2006, the inaugural symposium brought together practitioners from 10 participating SADC countries to deliberate on land and water management for sustainable agriculture, and discuss how the most recent research and development advances in land and water management might be made more relevant to policymakers as well as the region's small-scale farmers. The edited contributions to this first symposium appear in this volume. The second symposium was held in Gaborone, Botswana, in February 2007, and brought together regional experts to discuss opportunities for improving water use and water use efficiency in agriculture in semi-arid and arid areas. The edited contributions to the second symposium appear in a companion volume entitled Land and Water Management in Southern Africa: Towards Better Water Use in Agriculture in Semi-Arid and Arid Areas (AISA 2008). It is hoped that these two volumes will help to disseminate regional expertise on land and water management to a wider audience, thus helping policy-makers and others to strengthen the agricultural sector in the region, and, in so doing, improve its food security and the wellbeing of its people.
