Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at IPCO 2002, the NinthInternationalConferenceonIntegerProgrammingandCombinatorial- timization, Cambridge, MA (USA), May 27–29, 2002. The IPCO series of c- ferences highlights recent developments in theory, computation, and application of integer programming and combinatorial optimization. IPCO was established in 1988 when the ?rst IPCO program committee was formed. IPCO is held every year in which no International Symposium on Ma- ematical Programming (ISMP) takes places. The ISMP is triennial, so IPCO conferences are held twice in every three-year period. The eight previous IPCO conferences were held in Waterloo (Canada) 1990, Pittsburgh (USA) 1992, Erice (Italy) 1993, Copenhagen (Denmark) 1995, Vancouver (Canada) 1996, Houston (USA) 1998, Graz (Austria) 1999, and Utrecht (The Netherlands) 2001. In response to the call for papers for IPCO 2002, the program committee received 110 submissions, a record number for IPCO. The program committee met on January 7 and 8, 2002, in Aussois (France), and selected 33 papers for inclusion in the scienti?c program of IPCO 2002. The selection was based on originality and quality, and re?ects many of the current directions in integer programming and combinatorial optimization research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ramsey theory is the study of the structure of mathematical objects that is preserved under partitions. In its full generality, Ramsey theory is quite powerful, but can quickly become complicated. By limiting the focus of this book to Ramsey theory applied to the set of integers, the authors have produced a gentle, but meaningful, introduction to an important and enticing branch of modern mathematics. Ramsey Theory on the Integers offers students a glimpse into the world of mathematical research and the opportunity for them to begin pondering unsolved problems. For this new edition, several sections have been added and others have been significantly updated. Among the newly introduced topics are: rainbow Ramsey theory, an "inequality" version of Schur's theorem, monochromatic solutions of recurrence relations, Ramsey results involving both sums and products, monochromatic sets avoiding certain differences, Ramsey properties for polynomial progressions, generalizations of the Erdős-Ginzberg-Ziv theorem, and the number of arithmetic progressions under arbitrary colorings. Many new results and proofs have been added, most of which were not known when the first edition was published. Furthermore, the book's tables, exercises, lists of open research problems, and bibliography have all been significantly updated. This innovative book also provides the first cohesive study of Ramsey theory on the integers. It contains perhaps the most substantial account of solved and unsolved problems in this blossoming subject. This breakthrough book will engage students, teachers, and researchers alike.

Book excerpt: This textbook offers an accessible introduction to combinatorics, infused with Solomon Golomb’s insights and illustrative examples. Core concepts in combinatorics are presented with an engaging narrative that suits undergraduate study at any level. Featuring early coverage of the Principle of Inclusion-Exclusion and a unified treatment of permutations later on, the structure emphasizes the cohesive development of ideas. Combined with the conversational style, this approach is especially well suited to independent study. Falling naturally into three parts, the book begins with a flexible Chapter Zero that can be used to cover essential background topics, or as a standalone problem-solving course. The following three chapters cover core topics in combinatorics, such as combinations, generating functions, and permutations. The final three chapters present additional topics, such as Fibonacci numbers, finite groups, and combinatorial structures. Numerous illuminating examples are included throughout, along with exercises of all levels. Three appendices include additional exercises, examples, and solutions to a selection of problems. Solomon Golomb’s Course on Undergraduate Combinatorics is ideal for introducing mathematics students to combinatorics at any stage in their program. There are no formal prerequisites, but readers will benefit from mathematical curiosity and a willingness to engage in the book’s many entertaining challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of notes and solved problems about probability theory. The book also contains proposed exercises attached to the solved problems as well as computer codes (in C++ language) added to some of these problems for the purpose of calculation, test and simulation. Illustrations (such as figures and tables) are added when necessary or appropriate to enhance clarity and improve understanding. In most cases intuitive arguments and methods are used to make the notes and solutions natural and instinctive. Like my previous books, maximum clarity was one of the main objectives and criteria in determining the style of writing, presenting and structuring the book as well as selecting its contents. However, the reader should notice that the book, in most parts, does not go beyond the basic probability and hence most subjects are presented and treated at their basic level. Accordingly, modest mathematical background knowledge is required for understanding most of the contents of the book. In fact, the book in most parts requires no more than a college or secondary school level of general mathematics. So, the intended readers of the book are primarily college (or A-level) students as well as junior undergraduate students (e.g. in mathematics or science or engineering). An interesting feature of the book is that it is written and designed, in part, to address practical calculational issues (e.g. through sample codes and suggested methods of solution) and hence it is especially useful to those who are interested in the calculational applications of the probability theory. The book can be used as a text or as a reference for an introductory course on this subject and may also be used for general reading in mathematics. The book may also be adopted as a source of pedagogical materials which can supplement, for instance, tutorial sessions (e.g. in undergraduate courses on mathematics or science).

Book excerpt: Every year there is at least one combinatorics problem in each of the major international mathematical olympiads. These problems can only be solved with a very high level of wit and creativity. This book explains all the problem-solving techniques necessary to tackle these problems, with clear examples from recent contests. It also includes a large problem section for each topic, including hints and full solutions so that the reader can practice the material covered in the book. The material will be useful not only to participants in the olympiads and their coaches but also in university courses on combinatorics.
