Book Synopsis The Insulin-like Growth Factors by : Paul N. Schofield
Download or read book The Insulin-like Growth Factors written by Paul N. Schofield and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has seen an explosion in our understanding of the factors regulating cell proliferation and differentiation. One of the most exciting advances has been the recognition of the pivotal role of the peptide growth factors in these processes. The insulin-like growth factors, discovered in 1958 by Salmon and Daughaday, are now among the best characterized growth factors. This comprehensive work describes the recent advances in knowledge of their receptors and binding proteins together with their purification and cloning. This provides exciting insights into the role of these factors in the physiology of normal growth, embryonic development and areas of pathology such as wound healing and cancer. In this book an international group of contributors reviews the most up-to-date information on all aspects of the insulin-like growth factors, and critically discusses models for IGF action in their own systems. The book is a valuable source of information and ideas for researchers, and an accessible introduction to the subject for students and clinicians.
Book Synopsis Saga Of The Nerve Growth Factor, The: Preliminary Studies, Discovery, Further Development by : Rita Levi-montalcini
Download or read book Saga Of The Nerve Growth Factor, The: Preliminary Studies, Discovery, Further Development written by Rita Levi-montalcini and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-04-01 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of articles written by Nobel Laureate Rita Levi-Montalcini and published from 1942 to 1995. Studies described in the first part set the stage for the discovery of a protein molecule which became known as the Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), described in detail in the second part. The NGF synthesized in minute amounts in all vertebrate tissues, plays an essential role in the differentiation and survival of several nerve cell populations in the peripheral and central nervous system. The discovery of the NGF was defined by the Nobel Foundation as a milestone in developmental neurobiology, and the author was awarded in 1986 with this prestigious award. Studies pursued in subsequent years and still in progress, have unveiled other fundamental properties of the NGF, described in the third part of this volume.

Book Synopsis Current Directions in Insulin-Like Growth Factor Research by : Derek LeRoith
Download or read book Current Directions in Insulin-Like Growth Factor Research written by Derek LeRoith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) family has become an exciting area of investigation. Initially, this family consisted of ligands (insulin, IGF-I and IGF-m and receptors (the insulin receptor, the type I or IGF-I receptor and the type II or IGF-IYM-6-P receptor). Subsequently, it was discovered that six specific binding proteips (lGFBPs 1-6) playa major role in the actions of this growth factor family. In addition, there are now more potential receptors when one considers the possible roles of the insulin-receptor related receptor (IRR) and hybrid receptor dimers composed of insulin and IGF-I receptor (half-receptors). Another important aspect of this area of research is the realization that the IGFs are not only essential for normal growth and development but, in addition play an important role in the normal specialized function(s) of all tissues of the body, including the nervous system, skeleton, reproductive system, kidney, and the immune system, to name but a few. The development of recombi!tant human IGF-I for clinical testing has been a major breakthrough for investigators. Potential uses include wound healing, reversal of catabolic states, diabetes, bone remodeling, recovery from acute renal failure and many others. will determine both its use and its potential hazards.

Book Synopsis Treatment of Neurodevelopmental Disorders by : Randi Jenssen Hagerman
Download or read book Treatment of Neurodevelopmental Disorders written by Randi Jenssen Hagerman and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cutting-edge book brings advances in genetics, neurobiology, and psychopharmacology to the clinic to enhance treatment for neurodevelopmental disorders. Significant progress has been made in identifying the neurobiological mechanisms of several disorders and targeted treatments are modifying the outcome of these disorders. However, the ability to utilize this knowledge has not been summarized in one place for the practicing clinician. This book will fill that gap by providing the theoretical underpinnings and the latest advances in targeted treatments. Several neurodevelopmental disorders are reviewed in detail including clinical features and behavioral phenotypes, standard treatments and new targeted treatments based on the latest advances in neurobiology and the animal model studies that have lead to new treatments. The disorders covered include psychiatric disorders: schizophrenia, depression, autism and ADHD; single gene disorders including Tuberous Sclerosis, Fragile X Syndrome and fragile X- associated disorders, Angelman Syndrome, PKU, and Muscular Dystrophies; and complex genetic disorders such as Down syndrome. This book also highlights the commonalities across disorders and new genetic and molecular concepts in an easy to read format. This is a very exciting time for new targeted treatments and this volume is a landmark treatise on this new age of treatment.
