Book excerpt: This manual provides guidance to Corps of Engineers (CE) personnel who are responsible for monitoring and analyzing embankment dams and levees. This revision focuses on issues that are of current concern in the Corps' mission of dam safety which includes monitoring embankment dams and levees. Design and construction of new projects have been decreasing. The majority of Corps dams have been instrumented, and the basic instrumentation concepts for monitoring seepage, pressure, and movement have been emphasized over the years in several CE regulations, directives, and programs. Geotechnical personnel are generally familiar with the behavior of instrument systems for which they are responsible. The current challenge for personnel responsible for embankment dam and levee safety is increased, and continuous attention must be paid to operation and maintenance of existing embankment structures and instrument systems. Therefore, a significant amount of engineering judgment must be applied to major rehabilitation, assessment of system performance, replacement, maintenance, and other situations that have become unique to each embankment structure and instrument system. This manual provides information and guidance that is needed for modifying existing systems as well as for new system installation for new construction.

Book excerpt: This United States Army Corps of Engineers publication, Engineer Manual EM 1110-2-1908 Engineering and Design: Instrumentation of Embankment Dams and Levees November 2020, provides guidance to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) personnel who are responsible for instrumentation, monitoring, and assessing the performance of embankment dams and levees. This manual applies to HQUSACE elements, Major Subordinate Commands (MSC), districts, laboratories, and field operating activities (FOA) involved with planning, design, construction, installation, data management and processing, monitoring, analysis, and maintenance of instrumentation systems. Project partnering agreements and associated operations and maintenance (O&M) manuals should include considerations for instrumentation consistent with this manual.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Besides giving an historical introduction to embankment dams the book describes the need for instrumentation, planning procurement and installation practices of instruments. The significance of visual inspection and techniques, of monitoring various parameters, seepage, pore pressure, surface and internal displacements, earth pressures and seismic behaviour, through instrumentation has been described. Collection and processing of data and their use for back analysis to check stability of a dam at various stages of construction and reservoir filling have been suggested. In addition to case histories quoted in various chapters, an exclusive chapter on select case histories has been added which describes the conventional and latest instruments that are being used and methods adopted for installation, monitoring and analyses of data.

Book excerpt: This book aims to inform policy-makers, engineers and earth scientists about the current and emerging role of geophysics in addressing environmental processes, assessments, and policy directions related to new and existing dams and levees. Until now geophysics has concentrated on characterization and remediation of dams and levees, but now the field is changing our understanding on the influence of natural processes (e.g., floods, dissolution) and human activities in the design, and management of these structures. This monograph includes advances in the following fields of Dams and Levees studies: · New insights from small and mid-sized laboratory experiments· Integrated methods electromagnetic, seismic, potential methods· Inverse modeling approaches· Statistical considerations· Monitoring of processes attending aging structures · Hazard monitoring· Risk Analysis

Book excerpt: Prepared by the Task Committee on Instrumentation and Monitoring Dam Performance of the Hydropower Committee of the Energy Division of ASCE. This report is a handy and comprehensive source of information for dam owners, engineers, and regulators about instrumentation and measurements for monitoring performance of all types of dams. It presents the methodology and process for the selection, measurement instruments and techniques, installation, operation, maintenance, use, and evaluation of instrumentation and measurement systems for dams, appurtenant structures, their foundations, and environment. Topics include: factors affecting dam performance, means and methods of monitoring dam performance, planning and implementation of a monitoring program, data evaluation and reporting, and decision making. Case histories of instrumentation and monitoring programs at specific dams are provided for the reader. Product Review "I highly recommend this comprehensive reference on instrumentation used to evaluate dam performance. All owners, engineers, and regulators of dams should own a copy of this book." ?Fred Sage, Field Branch Chief, California Division of Safety of Dams

Book excerpt: Dam and levee remediation has become more prevalent since the start of the twenty-first century. Given the vastness and complexity of the infrastructures involved, keeping up with maintenance needs is very difficult. Major surges in repair are usually triggered by nature’s wake-up calls, such as hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes. The challenge has been to develop methods that ensure safe, effective, reliable, and robust solutions for current and future remediation issues. Specialty Construction Techniques for Dam and Levee Remediation presents the state of practice in North American dam and levee remediation as it relates to the use of specialty geotechnical construction techniques, such as anchors, grouting, cutoff (diaphragm) walls, and deep mixing. The book focuses on the actual construction processes, describing design and performance aspects of remediation where appropriate. Chapters deal with the application of drilling and grouting methods, methods to install mix-in-place (category 2) cutoff structures, excavated and backfilled trenches (category 1), composite cutoff walls, and stabilization using prestressed rock anchors. The book also provides a comprehensive guide to dam and levee instrumentation, covering planning, operating principles, data management, staffing, and automation. As an educational and salutary example of ineffective efforts, the final chapter presents a case history of a series of remediations performed on a single project, which ultimately proved unsuccessful. A wide range of methods has been developed in response to the challenges that arise in the dam and levee remediation arena and the need for a competitive edge. These new methods are designed and monitored using state-of-the-art techniques, giving rise to the emergence of new intensity and initiative in this field. This book captures this transformation by examining the theory and practice of contemporary remedial techniques, using recent U.S. case histories to provide knowledge and inspiration to readers, both in North America and around the world.
