Book excerpt: Elementary Differential Equations with Linear Algebra, Third Edition provides an introduction to differential equation and linear algebra. This book includes topics on numerical methods and Laplace transforms. Organized into nine chapters, this edition begins with an overview of an equation that involves a single unknown function of a single variable and some finite number of its derivatives. This text then examines a linear system of two equations with two unknowns. Other chapters consider a class of linear transformations that are defined on spaces of functions wherein these transformations are essential in the study of linear differential equations. This book discusses as well the linear differential equations whose coefficients are constant functions. The final chapter deals with the properties of Laplace transform in detail and examine as well the applications of Laplace transforms to differential equations. This book is a valuable resource for mathematicians, students, and research workers.

Book excerpt: The third edition of this concise, popular textbook on elementary differential equations gives instructors an alternative to the many voluminous texts on the market. It presents a thorough treatment of the standard topics in an accessible, easy-to-read, format. The overarching perspective of the text conveys that differential equations are about applications. This book illuminates the mathematical theory in the text with a wide variety of applications that will appeal to students in physics, engineering, the biosciences, economics and mathematics. Instructors are likely to find that the first four or five chapters are suitable for a first course in the subject. This edition contains a healthy increase over earlier editions in the number of worked examples and exercises, particularly those routine in nature. Two appendices include a review with practice problems, and a MATLABĀ® supplement that gives basic codes and commands for solving differential equations. MATLABĀ® is not required; students are encouraged to utilize available software to plot many of their solutions. Solutions to even-numbered problems are available on springer.com. From the reviews of the second edition: "The coverage of linear systems in the plane is nicely detailed and illustrated. ...Simple numerical methods are illustrated and the use of Maple and MATLAB is encouraged. ...select Dave Logan's new and improved text for my course." --Robert E. O'Malley, Jr., SIAM Review, Vol. 53 (2), 2011 "Aims to provide material for a one-semester course that emphasizes the basic ideas, solution methods, and an introduction to modeling. ...The book that results offers a concise introduction to the subject for students of mathematics, science and engineering who have completed the introductory calculus sequence. ...This book is worth a careful look as a candidate text for the next differential equations course you teach." --William J. Satzer, MAA Reviews, January, 2011.

Book Synopsis A First Course in Differential Equations by : John David Logan

This book was released on 2006 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the standard sophomore course on elementary differential equations is typically one semester in length, most of the texts currently being used for these courses have evolved into calculus-like presentations that include a large collection of methods and applications, packaged with state-of-the-art color graphics, student solution manuals, the latest fonts, marginal notes, and web-based supplements. All of this adds up to several hundred pages of text and can be very expensive. Many students do not have the time or desire to read voluminous texts and explore internet supplements. Thats what makes the format of this differential equations book unique. It is a one-semester, brief treatment of the basic ideas, models, and solution methods. Its limited coverage places it somewhere between an outline and a detailed textbook. The author writes concisely, to the point, and in plain language. Many worked examples and exercises are included. A student who works through this primer will have the tools to go to the next level in applying ODEs to problems in engineering, science, and applied mathematics. It will also give instructors, who want more concise coverage, an alternative to existing texts. This text also encourages students to use a computer algebra system to solve problems numerically. It can be stated with certainty that the numerical solution of differential equations is a central activity in science and engineering, and it is absolutely necessary to teach students scientific computation as early as possible. Templates of MATLAB programs that solve differential equations are given in an appendix. Maple and Mathematica commands are given as well. The author taught this material on several ocassions to students who have had a standard three-semester calculus sequence. It has been well received by many students who appreciated having a small, definitive parcel of material to learn. Moreover, this text gives students the opportunity to start reading mathematics at a slightly higher level than experienced in pre-calculus and calculus; not every small detail is included. Therefore the book can be a bridge in their progress to study more advanced material at the junior-senior level, where books leave a lot to the reader and are not packaged with elementary formats. J. David Logan is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He is the author of another recent undergraduate textbook, Applied Partial Differential Equations, 2nd Edition (Springer 2004).

Book Synopsis Elementary Differential Equations by : Charles Roberts
Download or read book Elementary Differential Equations written by Charles Roberts and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elementary Differential Equations, Second Edition is written with the knowledge that there has been a dramatic change in the past century in how solutions to differential equations are calculated. However, the way the topic has been taught in introductory courses has barely changed to reflect these advances, which leaves students at a disadvantage. This second edition has been created to address these changes and help instructors facilitate new teaching methods and the latest tools, which includes computers. The text is designed to help instructors who want to use computers in their classrooms. It accomplishes this by emphasizing and integrating computers in teaching elementary or ordinary differential equations. Many examples and exercises included in the text require the use of computer software to solve problems. It should be noted that since instructors use their own preferred software, this book has been written to be independent of any specific software package. Features: Focuses on numerical methods and computing to generate solutions Features extensive coverage of nonlinear differential equations and nonlinear systems Includes software programs to solve problems in the text which are located on the author's website Contains a wider variety of non-mathematical models than any competing textbook This second edition is a valuable, up-to-date tool for instructors teaching courses about differential equations. It serves as an excellent introductory textbook for undergraduate students majoring in applied mathematics, computer science, various engineering disciplines and other sciences. They also will find that the textbook will aide them greatly in their professional careers because of its instructions on how to use computers to solve equations.
Book Synopsis Differential Equations with Linear Algebra by : Matthew R. Boelkins
Download or read book Differential Equations with Linear Algebra written by Matthew R. Boelkins and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-11-05 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linearity plays a critical role in the study of elementary differential equations; linear differential equations, especially systems thereof, demonstrate a fundamental application of linear algebra. In Differential Equations with Linear Algebra, we explore this interplay between linear algebra and differential equations and examine introductory and important ideas in each, usually through the lens of important problems that involve differential equations. Written at a sophomore level, the text is accessible to students who have completed multivariable calculus. With a systems-first approach, the book is appropriate for courses for majors in mathematics, science, and engineering that study systems of differential equations. Because of its emphasis on linearity, the text opens with a full chapter devoted to essential ideas in linear algebra. Motivated by future problems in systems of differential equations, the chapter on linear algebra introduces such key ideas as systems of algebraic equations, linear combinations, the eigenvalue problem, and bases and dimension of vector spaces. This chapter enables students to quickly learn enough linear algebra to appreciate the structure of solutions to linear differential equations and systems thereof in subsequent study and to apply these ideas regularly. The book offers an example-driven approach, beginning each chapter with one or two motivating problems that are applied in nature. The following chapter develops the mathematics necessary to solve these problems and explores related topics further. Even in more theoretical developments, we use an example-first style to build intuition and understanding before stating or proving general results. Over 100 figures provide visual demonstration of key ideas; the use of the computer algebra system Maple and Microsoft Excel are presented in detail throughout to provide further perspective and support students' use of technology in solving problems. Each chapter closes with several substantial projects for further study, many of which are based in applications.
