This innovative textbook allows the two subjects to be developed either separately or together, illuminating the connections between two fundamental topics, and giving increased flexibility to instructors. It can be used either as a semester-long course in differential equations, or as a one-year course in differential equations, linear algebra, and applications. Beginning with the basics of differential equations, it covers first and second order equations, graphical and numerical methods, and matrix equations. The book goes on to present the fundamentals of vector spaces, followed by eigenvalues and eigenvectors, positive definiteness, integral transform methods and applications to PDEs. The exposition illuminates the natural correspondence between solution methods for systems of equations in discrete and continuous settings. The topics draw on the physical sciences, engineering and economics, reflecting the author's distinguished career as an applied mathematician and expositor.

Intended for undergraduate majors in mathematics, applied mathematics, chemistry, and physics, the treatment's only prerequisite is a first course in calculus. Proofs are given in detail, and carefully chosen problems demonstrate the variety of situations in which these concepts arise. After a brief Introduction, the text advances to chapters on the plane, linear dependence, span, dimension, bases, and subspaces. Subsequent chapters explore linear transformations, the dual space in terms of multilinear forms and determinants, a traditional treatment of determinants, and inner product spaces. Extensive Appendixes cover equations and identities; variables, quantifiers, and unknowns; sets; proofs; indices and summations; and functions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mathematical formulations of problems in physics, economics, biology, and other sciences are usually embodied in differential equations. The analysis of the resulting equations then provides new insight into the original problems. This book describes the tools for performing that analysis. The first chapter treats single differential equations, emphasizing linear and nonlinear first order equations, linear second order equations, and a class of nonlinear second order equations arising from Newton's laws. The first order linear theory starts with a self-contained presentation of the exponential and trigonometric functions, which plays a central role in the subsequent development of this chapter. Chapter 2 provides a mini-course on linear algebra, giving detailed treatments of linear transformations, determinants and invertibility, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and generalized eigenvectors. This treatment is more detailed than that in most differential equations texts, and provides a solid foundation for the next two chapters. Chapter 3 studies linear systems of differential equations. It starts with the matrix exponential, melding material from Chapters 1 and 2, and uses this exponential as a key tool in the linear theory. Chapter 4 deals with nonlinear systems of differential equations. This uses all the material developed in the first three chapters and moves it to a deeper level. The chapter includes theoretical studies, such as the fundamental existence and uniqueness theorem, but also has numerous examples, arising from Newtonian physics, mathematical biology, electrical circuits, and geometrical problems. These studies bring in variational methods, a fertile source of nonlinear systems of differential equations. The reader who works through this book will be well prepared for advanced studies in dynamical systems, mathematical physics, and partial differential equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material presented in this book corresponds to a semester-long course, ``Linear Algebra and Differential Equations'', taught to sophomore students at UC Berkeley. In contrast with typical undergraduate texts, the book offers a unifying point of view on the subject, namely that linear algebra solves several clearly-posed classification problems about such geometric objects as quadratic forms and linear transformations. This attractive viewpoint on the classical theory agrees well with modern tendencies in advanced mathematics and is shared by many research mathematicians. However, the idea of classification seldom finds its way to basic programs in mathematics, and is usually unfamiliar to undergraduates. To meet the challenge, the book first guides the reader through the entire agenda of linear algebra in the elementary environment of two-dimensional geometry, and prior to spelling out the general idea and employing it in higher dimensions, shows how it works in applications such as linear ODE systems or stability of equilibria. Appropriate as a text for regular junior and honors sophomore level college classes, the book is accessible to high school students familiar with basic calculus, and can also be useful to engineering graduate students.

Book excerpt: "Linear Algebra to Differential Equations concentrates on the essential topics necessary for all engineering students in general and computer science branch students, in particular. Specifically, the topics dealt will help the reader in applying linear algebra as a tool. The advent of high-speed computers has paved the way for studying large systems of linear equations as well as large systems of linear differential equations. Along with the standard numerical methods, methods that curb the progress of error are given for solving linear systems of equations. The topics of linear algebra and differential equations are linked by Kronecker products and calculus of matrices. These topics are useful in dealing with linear systems of differential equations and matrix differential equations. Differential equations are treated in terms of vector and matrix differential systems, as they naturally arise while formulating practical problems. The essential concepts dealing with the solutions and their stability are briefly presented to motivate the reader towards further investigation. This book caters to the needs of Engineering students in general and in particular, to students of Computer Science & Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Robotics. Further, the book provides a quick and complete overview of linear algebra and introduces linear differential systems, serving the basic requirements of scientists and researchers in applied fields. Book excerpt: Building on the author's previous edition on the subject (Introduction to Linear Algebra, Jones & Bartlett, 1996), this book offers a refreshingly concise text suitable for a standard course in linear algebra, presenting a carefully selected array of essential topics that can be thoroughly covered in a single semester. Although the exposition generally falls in line with the material recommended by the Linear Algebra Curriculum Study Group, it notably deviates in providing an early emphasis on the geometric foundations of linear algebra. This gives students a more intuitive understanding of the subject and enables an easier grasp of more abstract concepts covered later in the course. The focus throughout is rooted in the mathematical fundamentals, but the text also investigates a number of interesting applications, including a section on computer graphics, a chapter on numerical methods, and many exercises and examples using MATLAB. Meanwhile, many visuals and problems (a complete solutions manual is available to instructors) are included to enhance and reinforce understanding throughout the book. Brief yet precise and rigorous, this work is an ideal choice for a one-semester course in linear algebra targeted primarily at math or physics majors. It is a valuable tool for any professor who teaches the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and linear algebra are foundational postcalculus mathematics courses in the sciences. The goal of this text is to help students master both subject areas in a one-semester course. Linear algebra is developed first, with an eye toward solving linear systems of ODEs. A computer algebra system is used for intermediate calculations (Gaussian elimination, complicated integrals, etc.); however, the text is not tailored toward a particular system.?Ordinary Differential Equations and Linear Algebra: A Systems Approach?systematically develops the linear algebra needed to solve systems of ODEs and includes over 15 distinct applications of the theory, many of which are not typically seen in a textbook at this level (e.g., lead poisoning, SIR models, digital filters). It emphasizes mathematical modeling and contains group projects at the end of each chapter that allow students to more fully explore the interaction between the modeling of a system, the solution of the model, and the resulting physical description.?

Book excerpt: This brief modern introduction to the subject of ordinary differential equations emphasizes stability theory. Concisely and lucidly expressed, it is intended as a supplementary text for advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students who have completed a first course in ordinary differential equations. The author begins by developing the notions of a fundamental system of solutions, the Wronskian, and the corresponding fundamental matrix. Subsequent chapters explore the linear equation with constant coefficients, stability theory for autonomous and nonautonomous systems, and the problems of the existence and uniqueness of solutions and related topics. Problems at the end of each chapter and two Appendixes on special topics enrich the text.
