Book excerpt: In this study, the researcher investigated the effects of instructional coaching on teacher self-efficacy and student achievement. Fifty-nine third-grade teachers participated. Thirty-three teachers taught at schools with a full-time instructional coach. Twenty-six participants taught at schools with no instructional coach. Teachers took a comprehensive inventory, which included the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale and the Collective Efficacy Scale. The researcher analyzed Criteria-Referenced Competency Test results from both types of schools from 2009-2013. The researcher analyzed data using the t -test, ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation. These tests revealed no significant overall difference between self-efficacy or collective efficacy within the two teacher groups. Specific differences were found within the domains of the TSES. Coaching schools experienced more growth on the CRCT over a four-year period, closing the achievement gap. The only significant positive correlation was between students who did not meet reading CRCT standards and the self-efficacy of their teachers.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study was to determine if there was a difference in teacher efficacy between general education teachers who are coached by a special education instructional coach and general education teachers who have not been coached by a special education instructional coach. Federal mandates, such as the Every Student Succeeds Act and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, guarantee that students with disabilities are included in the general education classroom. General education teachers need to be qualified to teach in an inclusive classroom, yet research overwhelmingly demonstrates that they do not feel prepared or effective. Currently, very little information exists on special education instructional coaching. Student achievement is directly impacted by teacher efficacy; therefore, the results of this study were necessary for considering strategies ensuring as many students as possible achieve at a high rate. Bandura’s social cognitive theory and the central tenet of self-efficacy in that theory informed this research. This study utilized a causal-comparative design to examine the Teacher Efficacy for Inclusive Practices (TEIP) Scale scores. A random sample of 137 general education teachers was surveyed through an online version of the TEIP. An independent-samples t-test was used to analyze the scores for overall self-efficacy as well as collaboration. The Wilcoxon test was used to analyze scores for inclusive pedagogy and classroom management because they did not follow a normal distribution. The results indicated that there was no significant difference in aggregate efficacy or the subfactors of inclusive pedagogy, classroom management, and collaboration.

The study consists of a survey to determine the overall self-efficacy of both new and veteran teachers as well as teachers who have worked with an instructional coach twenty (20) hours or more and those that have not. Teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs were measured using a survey. The survey itself is based on a larger self-efficacy scale for teachers created by Bandura (2006). Teachers’ self-efficacy was also measured in three subcategories: instruction, discipline, and the ability to create a positive climate/culture. The study is of significant interest to schools or districts planning to implement or currently implementing an instructional coaching model and any district interested in retaining new teachers. The aim of this research is to determine why new teachers are leaving the profession at such alarming rates and what we can do to help them succeed and remain in the teaching profession. By measuring a new teacher’s self-efficacy some predictive value regarding his/her success and retention may be gained. New teachers need assistance, support, and encouragement. Approximately 50% of new teachers leave the teaching profession within the first five years. Instructional coaches can assist new teachers develop a strong sense of self-efficacy. With increased self-efficacy, maybe the retention rate will go up. Student achievement is also impacted negatively by high teacher turnover. Additionally, research on the use and helpfulness of instructional coaches is sorely needed. While the use of instructional coaching has gained acceptance, the way in which instructional coaches are used varies widely. This study will help target the use of instructional coaches to where they can make the greatest impact.

When assessing teachers’ self-efficacy, there were no statistically significant changes. When interviewed, teachers felt self-efficacy had changed as a result of the coaching model. Assessing teachers' beliefs in the value of instructional coaching models in improving instruction, had no statistical significance. However, teachers felt the model was valuable in goal setting and helping pinpoint areas of weakness within teacher instruction.

The Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES) was distributed to all content-area teachers, kindergarten through twelfth grade, in a suburban district in a southern state through email; additionally, all instructional coaches in the district were invited to complete The Instructional Coaching Skills Instrument (ICSI). The sample included 100 content area teachers and 30 instructional coaches. The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine if significant differences existed between the groups of the independent variable on the dependent variable. Results were not statistically significant; however, scores on TSES were consistently above average.
