Book Synopsis Recent Advances and Perspectives on the Gastrointestinal Microbiota of Small Ruminants by : Anusorn Cherdthong
Download or read book Recent Advances and Perspectives on the Gastrointestinal Microbiota of Small Ruminants written by Anusorn Cherdthong and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-09-23 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ruminants are hoofed mammals with a unique digestive system that allows them to better create energy from fibrous plant material than other herbivores. Small ruminants (such as sheep and goats) play an important role in global food security and nutrition, as well as in the livelihoods of farmers and others along the food chain. Due to the unique digestive systems of ruminants, many major studies have focused on the effects of high-concentrate diets on rumen fermentation, ruminal acidosis, and their microbial properties and functions. Therefore, paying attention to the intestinal health of small ruminants during the rapid fattening stage has important implications for their health and productivity. Ruminants host a taxonomically diverse microbiota in their rumen, which is generally considered to be the most efficient natural fermentation system. Rumen microorganisms facilitate the degradation of otherwise indigestible plant fibres into absorbable compounds such as proteins and volatile fatty acids, the main source of energy and nutrition for ruminants. They are composed of a complex and dynamic assembly of bacteria, fungi, archaea, protozoa, and viruses. Diets and additives directly affect the number and viability of rumen microorganisms.

Book Synopsis The plant microbiome and its importance for plant and human health by : Martin Grube
Download or read book The plant microbiome and its importance for plant and human health written by Martin Grube and published by Frontiers E-books. This book was released on 2015-01-22 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of plant-microbe associations by new techniques has significantly improved our understanding of the structure and specificity of the plant microbiome. Yet, microbiome function and the importance of the plant’s microbiome in the context of human and plant health are largely unexplored. Comparable with our human microbiome, millions of microbes inhabit plants, forming complex ecological communities that influence plant growth and health through its collective metabolic activities and host interactions. Viewing the microbiota from an ecological perspective can provide insight into how to promote plant health and stress tolerance of their hosts or how to adapt to a changing climate by targeting this microbial community. Moreover, the plant microbiome has a substantial impact on human health by influencing our gut microbiome by eating raw plants such as lettuce and herbs but also by influencing the microbiome of our environment through airflow. This research topic comprising reviews, original and opinion articles highlights the current knowledge regarding plant microbiomes, their specificity, diversity and function as well as all aspects studying the management of plant microbiomes to enhance plant growth, health quality and stress tolerance.

Book Synopsis Ultrastructure of the Digestive Tract by : P. Motta
Download or read book Ultrastructure of the Digestive Tract written by P. Motta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When established four years ago, the scope of this international series in electron microscopy essentially was to provide an opportunity for the pUblication of selected review contributions by specialists in ultrastructural research. Previous volumes presented over the last three years have focused on special topics of present interest in ~'ontemporary biomedicine such as endocrine cells, reproduction, and connective tissues. In these fielCls, in fact, integrated methods of electron microscopy have contributed much to generate new ideas and concepts of general value in both basic and clinical applications. The Ultrastructure of the Digestive Tract basically follows the same guidelines and style of the other books in the series and is an invited collection of selected contributions of authors from various laboratories active in the field of electron microscopy. Therefore, although the various chapters consist of individual topics, they nevertheless should be considered as interrelated contributions of specific subjects in the field. The idea was to have critical reviews of aspects previously published elsewhere by experts in the field who, as a rule, include other relevant information in their articles in order to update and enrich the subject. This book contains fifteen chapters by renowned electron microscopists. Each chapter, according to the policy of the editors, reviews a particular topic in great detail, providing updated information, study methods and results, authors' ideas on future investigative approaches, and possible guidelines for forthcoming work. We hope that this book will be useful to cell biologists, morphologists, physiologists, and pathologists.
