Book excerpt: Language, Literacy, and Learning in Primary Schools is a synthesis of the findings arising from four years of policy research and development in Nigeria's primary schools that focused on the gap between what teachers should know and be able to do, and the realities of teaching and learning in classrooms. It begins by critically examining the outcomes of primary schooling as measured by learning achievement results from national assessments, and by identifying some core learning problems for Nigerian primary school children. It reviews the findings from recent research reports that studied teaching and learning processes in primary school classrooms, and it identifies the pedagogical issues in primary classrooms that contribute to poor learning achievements. This report describes a research and development program that set out to improve teaching and learning in core learning skill areas of the curriculum. This study identifies priority areas for teachers' professional development. It suggests a policy framework for the continuing professional development of primary school teachers, including the initial preparation of teachers and their induction into teaching. It proposes medium and long-term strategies to bring about the desired changes in teaching and learning through school-based approaches to teacher development.

Book excerpt: Purpose: The study assessed the perceived need for inservice training to improve the teaching of mathematics in primary schools in Bendel State of Nigeria. Specifically, the study sought to know where and when the primary school mathematics teachers need inservice training to improve their standards of teaching elementary mathematics. The areas assessed were: the need for more knowledge, curriculum management, teaching strategies, behavior management, evaluation procedures, instructional materials, and the time preferred for inservice training. One hundred and forty-four (144) primary school teachers served as subjects in the study. There were 67 males and 77 females. Procedure: Three questionnaires (A, B and C) were designed to obtain the following information from the primary school teachers: (1) personal information, (2) professional education, (3) professional experience, (4) perceived need for inservice training to improve the teaching of mathematics in primary schools. Information obtained from 144 returned questionnaires (100%) was tabulated and the data were examined using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and the Pearson Product Moment Correlation to compute the reliability of 26 duplicated items in the questionnaire. Findings: The 144 primary school teachers who took part in the study expressed their need for training ranging from extensive to very little in the areas investigated. The subjects indicated a higher need for training in the area of curriculum management than the other areas investigated. One major finding from this study was that the test is made up of reliable items. The reliability of the individual items accepted ranged from .50 (moderate) to 1.00 (very dependable relationship). The primary school teachers who took part in the study agreed that elementary math inservice education would help them to know better how to teach elementary mathematics to their primary school students. The implications for the mathematics inservice training of these elementary school teachers were discussed and future research suggestions were also recommended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2015, the Journal of Education for Teaching celebrated 40 years of original contributions on the subject of international teacher education with the publication of an anniversary virtual special issue. Its unique contribution to debates about the preparation and lifelong learning of teachers in a variety of fields, including medical education and language education, have been expressed in a variety of formats and international contexts. These include high quality academic papers using innovative qualitative and quantitative methodologies, symposia in the form of Platonic dialogues, and even critical positions expressed in verse. This virtual special issue was freely available online throughout 2015 but the strong demand for the papers has prompted their re-publication in this volume, with the addition of several more articles. Taken together, this collection will allow the reader to experience the variety of the dozen or so international contexts represented in the journal and its academic quality. Included in the volume is the original Editorial from the first issue of the journal. The fact that the points made in this forty-year-old piece still ring true suggests that the threats to high quality teacher education remain much the same as they did four decades or more ago. The Journal of Education for Teaching continues to provide an indispensable platform for colleagues to make their voices heard in what appears to be an increasingly shrill evidence-free environment. Long may it do so.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preparation of suitably qualified teachers is vital for political, social and economic growth in developing countries. Some major problems have been caused by the enormous growth in primary enrolment and by the need to train more teachers without reducing standards, exacerbated by the fact that in many cases the structure of teacher education is still in its formative stages. However, these problems can lead to innovative options and solutions. Originally published in 1988, this book reports on research and practice in teacher education around the world. It examines, for example, what happens to teacher education at times of great social change or political unrest, as in South Africa or Cyprus, how programmes in, for example, Nigeria or China approach minority education and how teachers are prepared for the teaching of indigenous populations such as the Saskatchevan Indians in Canada. These examples of international teacher education practice are presented within a specific national, regional and cultural context and provide important perspectives on the traditional views of how teachers are and should be prepared and professionally maintained. The book will be of interest to all involved in teacher education, adult education and curriculum design as well as to students of development studies.
