Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects truly are the ugly ducklings of the natural world. How does something as beautiful as a butterfly begin life as little more than a fancy maggot? Or something as elegant and delicate as a lacewing hatch like a minuscule escapee from a horror movie? What are the circumstances that require a creature to transform from one body shape into another, a shape that is often so utterly different from the first that you would be forgiven for thinking they were completely unrelated organisms? This book illustrates some of the dramatic transformations insects undergo in their life cycles and explores why evolution has arrived at these remarkable solutions to survival. The aim of the book is to show remarkable transformations, most of which have never before been seen. The book is divided into two main sections: -Insects that undergo partial metamorphosis, such as dragonflies, grasshoppers, and bugs. Here the young resemble the adult, changing gradually with each molt. -Insects that experience a complete metamorphosis such as butterflies, moths, beetles, bees, wasps, ants, and flies. In these species, the young bear no resemblance to the adult in appearance, habitat, or diet, until they pupate. Rupert Soskin's unique project to photograph a range of selected species at each stage of development--from egg to larva to pupa and, finally, fully formed adult--sets a new precedent for nature photography.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Transformations It was universally believed by the ancient philosophers, that maggots, flies, and other insects were generated from putrefying substances. This opinion continues to be held by uninformed persons among ourselves; - though it would be equally correct to maintain, that a flight of vultures had been generated by the dead carcass which they may be seen devouring, or a flock of sheep from the grass-field in which they graze. Another opinion, perhaps still more generally diffused, is, that caterpillars, aphides, and other garden insects which destroy the leaves of plants, are generated, propagated, or, at least, spread about, by certain winds or states of the air, mysteriously and indefinitely termed blight. The latter belief is, probably, not so easy of immediate refutation as the former; - but, as we shall endeavour to show, it seems to us to be equally erroneous. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of the extensive seven-volume work Comprehensive Molecular Insect Science provided a complete reference encompassing important developments and achievements in modern insect science. One of the most swiftly moving areas in entomological and comparative research is molecular biology, and this volume, Insect Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, is designed for those who desire a comprehensive yet concise work on important aspects of this topic. This volume contains ten fully revised or rewritten chapters from the original series as well as five completely new chapters on topics such as insect immunology, insect genomics, RNAi, and molecular biology of circadian rhythms and circadian behavior. The topics included are key to an understanding of insect development, with emphasis on the cuticle, digestive properties, and the transport of lipids; extensive and integrated chapters on cytochrome P450s; and the role of transposable elements in the developmental processes as well as programmed cell death. This volume will be of great value to senior investigators, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and advanced undergraduate research students. It can also be used as a reference for graduate courses and seminars on the topic. Chapters will also be valuable to the applied biologist or entomologist, providing the requisite understanding necessary for probing the more applied research areas related to insect control. Topics specially selected by the editor-in-chief of the original major reference work Fully revised and new contributions bring together the latest research in the rapidly moving fields of insect molecular biology and insect biochemistry, including coverage of development, physiology, immunity and proteomics Full-color provides readers with clear, useful illustrations to highlight important research findings

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Transformation So many great names are enshrined in the literature of Insect Transformation, that the publication of a new book on the familiar theme may appear hazardous if not presumptuous. And as with lapse of time the literature accumulates, a well-balanced treatment of the subject becomes increasingly difficult. In this - volume designed to serve as an introduction to the study of growth and change in the life of insects - the author has sought, while re-telling many well-known stories, to call attention to some structural details that have hitherto escaped mention in text-books, and to discuss the relation of such details to the wider problems of insect life-histories. He ventures, therefore, to hope that the book may be of some service to serious workers in entomology as well as to beginners. Descriptions of the form of adult insects are given only in so far as is necessary to elucidate the structure of larvae, pupae, and immature stages generally. No attempt has been made to compile a bibliography, but references are given to books and papers to which the writer is indebted, and full lists of titles are to be found in many of these. Especial acknowledgment is due to the writings of A. S. Packard, L. C. Miall, L. F. Henneguy, J. H. Comstock and R. J. Tillyard. The source of every borrowed illustration is indicated in its title, and the thanks of the author and publishers are rendered to the United States Department of Agriculture, the Cambridge University Press, and the Royal Dublin Society, for the loan of blocks. The Cambridge Press has generously allowed the use of several figures from the author's "Lifestory of Insects," and from Dr. Tillyard's "Biology of Dragon-flies," while Prof. J. H. Comstock has kindly granted the use of illustrations from "The Wings of Insects," and from his lately-published "Introduction to Entomology." Book excerpt: Since the early nineteenth century, when entomologists first popularized the unique biological and behavioral characteristics of insects, technological innovators and theorists have proposed insects as templates for a wide range of technologies. In Insect Media, Jussi Parikka analyzes how insect forms of social organization-swarms, hives, webs, and distributed intelligence-have been used to structure modern media technologies and the network society, providing a radical new perspective on the interconnection of biology and technology. Through close engagement with the pioneering work of insect ethologists, including Jakob von Uexküll and Karl von Frisch, posthumanist philosophers, media theorists, and contemporary filmmakers and artists, Parikka develops an insect theory of media, one that conceptualizes modern media as more than the products of individual human actors, social interests, or technological determinants. They are, rather, profoundly nonhuman phenomena that both draw on and mimic the alien lifeworlds of insects. Deftly moving from the life sciences to digital technology, from popular culture to avant-garde art and architecture, and from philosophy to cybernetics and game theory, Parikka provides innovative conceptual tools for exploring the phenomena of network society and culture. Challenging anthropocentric approaches to contemporary science and culture, Insect Media reveals the possibilities that insects and other nonhuman animals offer for rethinking media, the conflation of biology and technology, and our understanding of, and interaction with, contemporary digital culture.
