Download or read book Cartae Baronum written by Neil Stacy and published by Publications of the Pipe Roll. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key point of reference for all political and social historians of twelfth-century England. Early in 1166, Henry II sent out orders via his sheriffs to all his tenants-in-chief, instructing them to send him returns (subsequently referred to as the cartae baronum) that listed the number of knights enfeoffed upon their estates in 1135 (when Henry I died); the number of knights they had enfeoffed since 1135; how many knights were charged on their demesne; and the names of their knightly tenants. The returns submitted by his tenants-in-chief are therefore indispensable records for the nature of tenurial lordship as it operated under King Henry II. The cartae were instrumental in their own day in confirming ligeance from rear tenants, and providing up-to-date lists of honorial knights from whom the king might collect such feudal incidents (wardships and reliefs as well as scutages and aids) as fell during a period of royal custody. They also laid the groundwork for a possible revision ofknightly quotas owing to the crown. Due to the sheer level of detail within the returns, they are also a key source for those scholars who are interested in tracing the histories of individual honors and identifying comital, baronial and knightly landholders in twelfth-century England. This important volume brings together all the extant cartae baronum for the first time. In addition to these, there are notices, mostly from the early thirteenthcentury, of those cartae which are now lost. Each individual cartae here is accompanied by a detailed note that identifies the individual tenant in chief, briefly discusses the history of his barony or holding, anddefines the nature of his obligations to the crown under Henry II. The editor has also corrected a number of long-established textual errors, and identified as many subtenants as possible and located their toponyms. NEIL STACY gained his DPhil from Oxford. His publications include books on the estates of the abbeys of Glastonbury and Shaftesbury.

Download or read book A Second Domesday? written by Sandra Raban and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-09-02 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1279-80 hundred rolls are one of the most important sources for later thirteenth century England, yet this is the first comprehensive study of the inquiry which brought them into being. A Second Domesday will be an indispensable working tool for historians and is based on the latest knowledge of the returns. More of these are being discovered all the time and one of the aims of this book is to stimulate the recognition of other surviving texts. The book places the inquiry in its historical context, continental as well as English. This is followed by an examination of its purpose and whether or not it was conceived deliberately as a second Domesday Book. Central to the study is a consideration of the geographical range of the inquiry, how it was conducted and the way in which the returns were compiled. The way in which the inquiry was used, by historians as well as contemporaries, along with the introductory chapters will be particularly helpful to students. The book concludes with a description of all known returns, which, together with the appendices, are designed to assist future users.

Download or read book Savage Fortune written by Lyn Boothman and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2006 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The eighty-three documents presented here, varied in length and character, are not all concerned with Suffolk, but they are all connected with the eventful lives of Sir Thomas (later Viscount) Savage and his wife Elizabeth Savage (later Countress Rivers), who married in 1602 and whose homes included Melford Hall." "Thomas and Elizabeth both inherited considerable estates in Suffolk, Essex and Cheshire. Within a tight circle of aristocratic Catholics, they became prominent servants of the royal family during the reigns of James I and Charles I. After Thomas's death in 1635, Elizabeth remained an intimate of the queen, but her two houses of St. Osyth's and Melford Hall were sacked in 1642, and she remained chronically short of money up to her death in 1651." "The central document is a remarkable inventory of 1635-6, taken after Thomas died, listing the contents of Melford Hall in Suffolk, Rocksavage in Cheshire and a town house on Tower Hill in London."--BOOK JACKET.
