Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the core disciplines, and contemporary concerns, that inform the study of education in Aotearoa. As a collection, the work provides a critical account of education policy trajectories and speculates on their limits and possibilities in the changing social and political landscape of Aotearoa New Zealand in the first half of the 21st century. The work has two aims. First, to serve as an introductory text for students in initial teacher education and other education programmes. Secondly, to be a resource for practitioners, policy makers, administrators and other stakeholders seeking to update their knowledge of the disciplines that comprise education studies, and their application in the current environment. It builds on the premise detailed in the Introduction: that all educational theory--in Aotearoa and beyond--must be understood and applied with due regard to personal, historical, and global context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diverse elements have created New Zealand’s distinctive political and social culture. First is New Zealand’s journey as a colony, and the various impacts this had on settler and Maori society. The second theme is the quest for what one prominent historian has labelled ‘national obsessions’ – equality and security, both individual and collective. The third, and more recent, theme is New Zealand’s emergence as a nation with a unique identity. New Zealand’s small geographic size and relative isolation from other societies, the dominant influence of British culture, the resurgence of Maori language and culture, the endemic instability of an economy based on a narrow range of pastoral products, and the dominance of the state in the lives of its people, all help to explain much of the present-day New Zealand psyche. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of New Zealand contains a chronology, an introduction, appendix, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 800 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about New Zealand.

Book excerpt: This book provides practical examples of what it means to teach for equity in Aotearoa New Zealand. It shows how research can become part of what teachers do in their everyday practice. The examples provide a practical guide to undertaking inquiry research projects that supports teacher professional learning in the service of all students learning, with a particular emphasis on increasing equity for educationally underserved students. The book draws on the findings of a 2-year collaborative inquiry research project which explored how we can teach in ways that support equitable outcomes for New Zealands super-diverse student population. The overall research question for the project was: How, and to what extent, can knowledge about teaching for equity be used to transform practice to improve learner outcomes? Two principals and seven teachers from two culturally and linguistically diverse Auckland primary schools situated in low socio-economic communities, and five New Zealand university teachers established collaborative inquiry research teams. Each team comprised school and university members who acted as critical friends for each other. There were two within school teams, and one across school team. The project was framed by the concept of facets of practice for equity derived from a synthesis of international empirical research. Each teacher inquiry had a facet of practice for equity as its focus. The case studies were developed from robust, multiple data sources and show the influence of teacher professional learning on student learning, and on whanau/parent engagement in the classroom/school.

Book excerpt: This is the first report of a longitudinal study of trainees preparing to teach in New Zealand primary and intermediate schools. The purpose of the study is to record attitudes and perceptions at the time of selection for teacher training at the end of l988 and the response of a smaller sample of students halfway through the first year of the course in 1989. The study is planned to run until 1992 when most of the students will have become beginning teachers. The study is being undertaken in three colleges: Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, and conducted in several phases. Data have been collected by means of a questionnaire to successful college applicants followed by more intensive investigation of a sample of the students through interviews and college records of performance. The report focuses on expectations, personal backgrounds, attitudes towards public service as future teachers, as well as thoughts on leading issues of the day such as gender and cultural equity. Future reports will document students' progress through teacher training and out into the classrooms with an eye towards helping inform individual colleges of ways education programs might be improved to enhance the student's experience.
