Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several different fluorocarbon fluids containing the SF5O- and CF3O- groups have been prepared using fluoroolefins and either SF5OOSO2F or CF3OOSO2F. In addition the fluorocarbon ethers, SF5OC2F4OSO2F and CF3OC2F4OSO2F, and several of their derivatives were prepared and characterized. Chlorine fluorosulfate and bromine fluorosulfate were shown to have wide utility in the displacement of halide from fluorocarbon halides (R sub f X) resulting in the formation of fluorocarbon fluorosulfates. The R sub f SO3F compounds are readily converted to derivatives such as acid fluorides, acids, etc., and in this way functionality is introduced into relatively inert fluorocarbons. A new method was discovered for the introduction of fluorine into an aromatic ring with retention of aromaticity, using NF4BF4 in HF solution. Also when the arene is already highly fluorinated, it was shown that a slower addition of fluorine occurred to give cyclohexadienes and cyclohexenes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been found possible to preserve metal-carbon and metalloid-carbon bonds during direct fluorination. The reaction of dimethylmercury with fluorine gives bis(trifluoromethyl)mercury in 6.5% yield. Fluorination of tetramethylsilane has led to the isolation of the new polyfluorotetramethylsilanes of the following type, Si(CH3)x(CH2F)y(CHF2)z, x+y+z = 4. Also characterized were compounds containing Si-CF3. It has been possible to synthesize tetrakis(trifluoromethyl)germanium in 63,5% yield from the reaction of fluorine with tetramethylgermanium. Also characterized were many polyfluorotetramethylgermanes of the following type, Ge(CF3)x(CF2H)y(CFH2)z, z + y + z = 4. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this project was to synthesize and study the chemistry of an array fluorocarbons and fluorocarbon derivatives in order to further understanding of fluorine as substituent in organic chemistry. Target molecules, all of which incorporated conjugation and/or strain, were chosen on the basis of unusual and/or interesting structural features. This investigation has accomplished the synthesis of many new fluorocarbons and derived molecules, and has included exploration of new synthetic methodology in fluorocarbon chemistry, determination of thermodynamic and kinetic parameters for fluorocarbon valence isomerizations, study of negative hyperconjugation, and examination of mechanisms of fluorocarbon reactions. Much has been learned about how to synthesize perfluorinated annulenes and their relatives, and much information has been acquired about potential energy surfaces for fluorocarbon valence isomerizations. A study of rotational barriers in alpha-fluoramines has revealed that negative hyperconjugation can have powerful energetic consequences even in neutral molecules. Insights into fluorocarbon reaction mechanisms, both thermal and photochemical, have emerged from synthetic explorations as well as from explicitly mechanistic studies. Keywords: Fluorocarbons; Organic synthesis; Annulenes; Ring strain; Dynamic NMR; Valence isomers; Negative hyperconjugation; Thermodynamic parameters; Kinetic parameters; Reaction mechanisms.

It is a monograph of historical character comprising personalized accounts of progress and events in areas of particular interest. There is also much to interest and instruct chemists from other disciplines as a good proportion of the chapters contain a considerable amount of 'hard' referenced information relating to modern organic, organoelemental and inorganic chemistry. Historians of chemistry and technology will no doubt be tempted to dip into this book, and surely whoever addresses the task of commemorating Moissan's achievement at the 150-years stage will bless us all in some measure for its existence.

Book excerpt: In recent years, organo-fluorine chemistry has made a marked impact on the design and synthesis of a large variety of biologically active molecules, such as steroids, carbohydrates, amines, amino acids, peptides and other natural products. Naturally occurring amino acids play a pivotal role in living systems, and therefore synthetic fluorine-containing amino acids have been of significant interest to researchers working towards the understanding and modification of physiological processes. Fluorine-containing Amino Acids: is the first volume devoted to the synthesis and properties of fluorine-containing amino acids pays special attention to the preparation of enantiomerically pure acids (which are essential to the modern pharmaceutical industry) deals with a rapidly expanding field of research has been written by experienced researchers who are responsible for many developments in the field highlights the interdisciplinary nature of this topic Fluorine-containing Amino Acids is the only dedicated reference in this subject and will be essential for researchers in synthetic organic, peptide, natural product, and medicinal chemistry and biochemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most syntheses in the chemical research laboratory fail and usually require several attempts before proceeding satisfactorily. Failed syntheses are not only discouraging and frustrating, but also cost a lot of time and money. Many failures may, however, be avoided by understanding the structure-reactivity relationship of organic compounds. This textbook highlights the competing processes and limitations of the most important reactions used in organic synthesis. By allowing chemists to quickly recognize potential problems this book will help to improve their efficiency and success-rate. A must for every graduate student but also for every chemist in industry and academia. Contents: 1 Organic Synthesis: General Remarks 2 Stereoelectronic Effects and Reactivity 3 The Stability of Organic Compounds 4 Aliphatic Nucleophilic Substitutions: Problematic Electrophiles 5 The Alkylation of Carbanions 6 The Alkylation of Heteroatoms 7 The Acylation of Heteroatoms 8 Palladium-Catalyzed C-C Bond Formation 9 Cyclizations 10 Monofunctionalization of Symmetric Difunctional Substrates
