Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research program at MIT on the fundamentals of processing of inorganic matrix composites focuses on developing a basic understanding of solidification processing of metal matrix composites and the behavior and modification of interfaces. This understanding is applied to the development of processes for the manufacture of evaluation specimens which are used, in turn, to determine the microstructure/processing/materials properties relationships. Technical areas discussed in this report include: Kinetics of Fiber Preform Infiltration; Infiltration of Fibrous Preforms by a Pure Metal; Intrinsic Toughness of Interfaces Between SiC Coatings and Substrates of Si or C Fiber; Interfaces with Controlled Toughness as Mechanical Fuses to Isolate Fibers from Damage; A High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy Study of the SiC coated Graphite Fiber/Aluminum Composite; Wetting of Ceramic Particulates with Liquid Aluminum Alloys; Wettability of SiC Particulates with Zn and Zn-Al Alloys; Interface Chemistry of Inorganic Composite Materials; Preparation of Boron-Containing Ceramic Materials by Pyrolicis of the Decaborane(14)-Derived- B10H12-Ph2POPPh2(x)-Polymer; Non-Polymeric Binders for Ceramic Powders: Utilization of Neutral and Ionic Species Derived from Decaborane (14); and Phosphorus-Containing Derivatives of Dacaborane (14) as Precursors to Boron- Containing Materials. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents theoretical and practical research relating to the vast, publicly financed program for the construction of new schools and the reorganization of existing educational buildings in Italy. This transformative process aims to give old buildings a fresh identity, to ensure that facilities are compliant with the new educational and teaching models, and to improve both energy efficiency and structural safety with respect to seismic activity. The book is divided into three sections, the first of which focuses on the social role of the school as a civic building that can serve the needs of the community. Innovations in both design and construction processes are then analyzed, paying special attention to the Building Information Modeling (BIM) strategy as a tool for the integration of different disciplines. The final section is devoted to the built heritage and tools, technologies, and approaches for the upgrading of existing buildings so that they meet the new regulations on building performance. The book will be of interest to all who wish to learn about the latest insights into the challenges posed by, and the opportunities afforded by, a comprehensive school building and renovation program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research was to contribute to the design or structure and mechanical properties of ceramic and carbon materials, by applying atomistic simulation and experiment. In the research on carbon, methodology has been developed to construct amorphous carbon/graphite and graphite/graphite (twin) interfaces by using empirical potential function. Simulation observations have been validated by HRTEM and mechanical testing. In the research on silicon carbide, the extent to which beta-SiC ran be treated by a classical many-body potential function has been established. It has been also shown how stability analysis can be combined with MD simulation to achieve quantitative interpretation of the lattice deformation under an applied load. In the experimental study of interface strength, a method has been developed by using laser induced shock waves. It has been applied to model couples consisting of SiC and sapphire, with or without carbon interlayers. jg p.1.

Wallenberger This book serves as an introduction to advanced inorganic fibers and aims to support fundamental research, assist applied scientists and designers in industry, and facilitate materials science instruction in universities and colleges. Its three main sections deal with fibers which are derived from the vapor phase such as single crystal silicon whiskers or carbon nanotubes, from the liquid phase such as advanced glass and single crystal oxide fibers, and from solid precursor fibers such as carbon and ceramic fibers. Contents FIBERS FROM THE VAPOR, LIQUID AND SOLID PHASE 1.1 The most important phase isthe liquid phase 1.2 Afiber by any name isstill afiber 1.3 Biographic sketches ofthe authors 1.4 Acknowledgments CHAPTER 1 FIBERS FROM THE VAPOR, LIQUID AND SOLID PHASE F. T. Wallenberger The book describes advanced inorganic fibers, focuses on principles and concepts, analyzes experimental and commercial processes, and relates process variables to structures, structures tofiber properties and fiber properties to end-use performance. In principle, there are discontinuous or inherently short, and continuous or potentially endless, fibers. Short fibers range from asbestos fibers, which were described as early as 300 BC to carbon nanotubes which were discovered in 1991 [1] and have been fully described in 1999 [2].
