Book excerpt: Innovative Bridge Structures Based on Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC): Theory, Experiments and Applications introduces more than a dozen innovative bridge structures and engineering applications developed by the author's team based on UHPC. As the new bridge structure developed by UHPC can make outstanding contributions to the realization of the "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals" and "sustainable development," and since recent studies have shown that the application of UHPC is expected to greatly reduce the amount of materials and carbon emissions and prolong the life of the structure, this book is an ideal update on the topic. For example, after calculation, when UHPC is applied to the arch bridge with compression as the main stress characteristic, compared with the steel arch bridge, the dead weight of the UHPC arch bridge is basically the same, and the cost and carbon emission are only 34% and 20% of the latter. Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) as a new generation of civil structural materials has the characteristics of high strength, high toughness and high durability. Through the collaborative innovation of new materials and new structures, the application of UHPC in bridge engineering is expected to achieve the goal of economical, environmentally-friendly, durable and high performance of the main structure. Teachers readers about the new structures and technologies in bridge engineering developed by the author's team based on UHPC Provides relevant experimental studies and the mechanical properties of different UHPC structures Helps users understand the design method and calculation theory of UHPC bridge structures Covers the characteristics and advantages of new UHPC structures and technologies applied to engineering

This book was released on 2016 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Joints are often considered as the weak link in a structure and often deterioration of the structure initiates from the joints. Joints transfer the stresses from super-structure to sub-structure and in this process are subjected to large transfer stresses. Not much attention is given to the design of joints as they are positioned in low moment regions and typically a 4 to 6 ksi (28 to 41 MPa) concrete is used to fill the joints. One of the solution to this problem is Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). In the recent past significant research has been done to use UHPC in deck-level connections and successful results were obtained. UHPC is a relatively new concrete material which not only has high compressive (18 ksi/124 MPa) and tensile strengths (5 ksi/35 MPa) with a very high chemical resistance, and durability. Use of steel fibers in UHPC helps increasing the service life. UHPC was successfully used by New York State and Iowa State Department of Transportations (DoT) in many bridges as various components, and proved to help with Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) which makes its use economical and time saving. This research focused on using UHPC as joint filler material along with High strength self-consolidating concrete (HS-SCC) while studying the effects of using different continuity details and effects of surface preparation of beam in a reinforced concrete section subjected to high-moment loading using 22 test specimens. An investigation of non-prestressed Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDoT) end girder detail using UHPC in the joint was also conducted. UHPC when used in the joints can be a viable solution making joints the stronger link holding the structure together"--Abstract, page iii.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is a new class of cementitious materials that have exceptional mechanical and durability characteristics. UHPC is commercially available. However, its cost for construction of highway structures is prohibitive. Based on an extensive testing program, a new family of non-proprietary UHPC materials with excellent characteristics in compression and tension, as well as exceptional resistance to freeze-thaw and chloride ion penetration were developed. The most cost effective of these deviates from traditional UHPC mixtures in that it uses a 50:50 mix of Portland Type I and Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag (GGBS) as a binder, lacks any silica powder (inert filler) and requires no post-placement treatment. The use of GGBS improves the material’s ‘greenness’ making it a more sustainable cementitious product. Specifications for making the new UHPC were proposed. The developed UHPC blend was then used to conduct a comprehensive study on bond between UHPC and deformed steel bars to facilitate and enable future structural applications. Bond pull out tests showed the developed UHPC requires significantly reduced development lengths in order to attain steel bar yield compared to traditional concrete. Models to characterize the bond strength were proposed and a UHPC joint consisting of two pre-cast bridge deck elements was developed and tested at full scale. It was shown that a 6” (150 mm) joint made of the developed UHPC was sufficient to successfully transfer loading between the decks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected chapters from the German concrete yearbook are now being published in the new English "Beton-Kalender Series" for the benefit of an international audience. Since it was founded in 1906, the Ernst & Sohn "Beton-Kalender" has been supporting developments in reinforced and prestressed concrete. The aim was to publish a yearbook to reflect progress in "ferro-concrete" structures until - as the book's first editor, Fritz von Emperger (1862-1942), expressed it - the "tempestuous development" in this form of construction came to an end. However, the "Beton-Kalender" quickly became the chosen work of reference for civil and structural engineers, and apart from the years 1945-1950 has been published annually ever since. Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) is a milestone in concrete technology and application. It permits the construction of both more slender and more durable concrete structures with a prolonged service life and thus improved sustainability. This book is a comprehensive overview of UHPC - from the principles behind its production and its mechanical properties to design and detailing aspects. The focus is on the material behaviour of steel fibre-reinforced UHPC. Numerical modelling and detailing of the connections with reinforced concrete elements are featured as well. Numerous examples worldwide - bridges, columns, facades and roofs - are the basis for additional explanations about the benefits of UHPC and how it helps to realise several architectural requirements. The authors are extensively involved in the testing, design, construction and monitoring of UHPC structures. What they provide here is therefore a unique synopsis of the state of the art with a view to practical applications.

Book excerpt: "The main objective of this research is to develop a cost-effective ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) for bonded bridge deck overlays. The high durability and mechanical properties of such repair material can offer shorter traffic closures and prolong the service life of the pavement. The UHPC was optimized using supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), proper combinations of sands, and adequate selection of fiber types and contents. Packing density studies included paste, sand, and fiber combinations. The robustness of optimized UHPC mixtures to variations of mixing and curing temperatures was examined. The efficiency of various shrinkage mitigation approaches in reducing autogenous and drying shrinkage of optimized UHPC mixtures was evaluated. This included the use of CaO-based and MgO-based expansive agents, shrinkage-reducing admixture, and pre-saturated lightweight sand. Optimized UHPC mixtures were cast as thin bonded overlays of 25, 38, and 50 mm in thickness over pavement sections measuring 1 × 2.5 m2. Early-age and long-term deformation caused by concrete, humidity and temperature gradients, as well as cracking and delamination were monitored over time. Test results indicate that the designed UHPC mixtures exhibited relatively low autogenous shrinkage and drying shrinkage. The G50 mixture had the lowest autogenous and drying shrinkage of 255 [mu]m/m at 28 days and 55 [mu]m/m at 98 days, respectively. All tested UHPC mixtures exhibited a high mechanical properties and excellent frost durability. The use of 60% lightweight sand led to significantly reduction in autogenous shrinkage from 530 to 35 [mu]m/m. Test results indicate that there was no surface cracking or delamination in UHPC overlays after 100 days of casting"--Abstract, page iii.
