Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sent to the Middle East by Woodrow Wilson to ascertain the viability of self-determination in the disintegrating Ottoman Empire, the King-Crane Commission of 1919 was America's first foray into the region. The commission's controversial recommendations included the rejection of the idea of a Jewish state in Syria, US intervention in the Middle East and the end of French colonial aspirations. The Commission's recommendations proved inflammatory, even though its counsel on the question of the Palestinian mandate was eventually disregarded by Lloyd George and Georges Clemenceau in favour of their own national interests. In the ensuing years, the Commission's dismissal of claims by Zionist representatives like David Ben-Gurion on their 'right to Palestine' proved particularly divisive, with some historians labeling it prophetic and accurate, and others arguing that Commission members were biased and ill-informed. Here, in the first book-length analysis of the King-Crane report in nearly 50 years, Andrew Patrick chronicles the history of early US involvement in the region, and challenges extant interpretations of the turbulent relationship between the United States and the Middle East.

Book excerpt: This book challenges conventional concepts of development and Modernization and surveys their contribution to "global dysfunction"-entrenched poverty, environmental degradation and socio-political unrest. Gotlieb argues for a social ecology based on quality of life and community, environmental sustainability, and "needs-based" rather than growth-oriented economic systems. Communities must find their own paths to environmentally sustainable recovery from local manifestations of global dysfunction.

Book excerpt: In Illuminations, Stephen Paul drew from his experience as a therapist, counselor, and teacher to compose a collection of proverbs to inspire and assist those seeking personal change and renewal. Inneractions continues this process through and beyond the point of "illuminations," offering meditations and proverbs designed to enhance and sustain the growth, change, and self-acceptance that have been achieved. This book is for those who have been willing to face their personal issues and do the work necessary to remove the inhibitions, misconceptions, fears, and doubts that have limited them in the past. Stating that is now the time "to catch the rhythm and join the dance" and "to pass through the door when it opens," Inneractions provides a clear roadmap for integrating the self with the beauty of the natural world and for being able to accept and receive its gifts.

Book excerpt: There are pivotal moments in the lives of all seekers when we realize that we’ve been traveling on our path of growth toward happiness and fulfillment, but, simply put, we want to go faster. How we have been living, working, and loving just isn’t enough or even acceptable anymore. We know we’re being called to something more significant and expanded—we can feel it. At these times what’s needed is not simply more change or an adjustment in our outer life, but profound transformation. We don’t just want to rearrange the pieces of ourselves so that they look better temporarily. We want nothing less than rebirth. We are ready for Soul Shifts. Soul Shifts is the groundbreaking new book from New York Times best-selling author and renowned transformational teacher Barbara De Angelis, Ph.D. Now, in her most powerful offering yet—and the culmination of her life’s work—Dr. De Angelis offers a practical handbook for awakening, and a brilliant revisioning of the journey of personal and spiritual transformation that will inspire and enlighten longtime seekers as well as new arrivals to the path of growth. Soul Shifts are radical, vibrational internal shifts that spontaneously and inevitably transform the way you relate to yourself, to others, and to the world. For transformation to be real and lasting, it must originate from the inside out, so that instead of trying to constantly micromanage everything, you operate from true mastery at the deepest level of who you are—the soul level. When you learn how to make these Soul Shifts on the inside, everything on the outside of your life shifts. Places where you’ve felt stuck or confused become illuminated with new clarity and understanding. Obstacles turn into possibilities, dead ends transform into doorways, and challenges convert into astonishing maps leading you to exciting new territories . . . all because you have made a Soul Shift. A masterful and moving teacher, Dr. De Angelis will offer you illuminating guidance and invaluable techniques for living a life of practical spirituality and making your own personal Soul Shifts. Written with Barbara De Angelis’s trademark eloquence, keen insight, and compassionate wisdom, Soul Shifts takes you on nothing less than a sacred inner journey to emotional and spiritual rebirth and lasting attainment. Reading it will leave you truly and authentically uplifted and transformed.

Book excerpt: Bridging the mystical and the scientific for Maximum Medicine • Shows how applying shamanic and energy medicine techniques alongside allopathic medicine can shift your health and allow you to increase your life force • Reveals how to sense the energy body in order to understand imbalances and develop greater control over your health • Looks at new ways of viewing health challenges and visualizing the potential for healing using symbolic medicine wheels and the Andean symbol of the Chacana For more than 20 years, Dr. Sharon E. Martin has been blending allopathic medicine with ancient shamanic knowledge to help her patients not only heal but also increase their vitality. In this practical guide to her Maximum Medicine program, Dr. Martin shows how understanding the energetics behind health imbalances and applying shamanic and energy medicine techniques can shift not only our perspective but our health, change the course of illness, and allow us to increase our life force. Bridging the mystical and the scientific, Maximize Your Healing Power helps us visualize our potential for healing using symbolic medicine wheels based on the elements, the compass directions, the four perspectives, and the inner tasks of intuitive exploration, amplification, intention setting, and ritual. Viewing our organ systems through the Andean symbol of the Chacana can help us understand and overcome health challenges. Change and healing is enacted through the process of the Four As—become aware, allow, act, affirm—with a new mindfulness matrix amplifying and deepening the process toward a greater ability to self-reflect. Presenting a clear, stepwise approach to attaining mastery of your health through many case studies as well as simple practices and methods to gain control over illness, Dr. Martin shows how anyone can support their own healing and experience being more fully alive.

The meeting brought together researchers who discussed recent developments in Hopf algebras, one of the most important being the influence of quantum groups. Articles offer introductory expositions and surveys on topics of current interest that, to date, have not been available in the current literature. Surveys are included on characteristics of Hopf algebras and their generalizations, biFrobenius algebras, braided Hopf algebras, inner actions and Galois theory, face algebras, and infinitesimal Hopf algebras. The following topics are also covered: existence of integrals, classification of semisimple and pointed Hopf algebras, *-Hopf algebras, dendriform algebras, etc. Non-classical topics are also included, reflecting its applications both inside and outside the theory.
