Book excerpt: "A private or secret place to which few other people are admitted." To most, an Inner Sanctum is compared to something physical like Area 51, a testing ground for weapons of destruction, a place we hear about and often question its existence. However, what if it were associated with an environment like your mind? A mental state that few can understand except those who house those emotions, choosing to keep these feelings to themselves. The two have similar convictions in creating defense mechanisms and influencing judgment on how we perceive our lives and the thoughts, ideas, and use for them having a major influence and impact on the outcome. The fact that we are all human may be true, but we also need to account for the internal and external stressors in our daily lives that contribute to how we function. In your reading, you will see both played a role in my perception of my place in the world. When coping with a chronic condition, the emotional piece to the disease can often be overshadowed by the physical and un-intentionally ignored, where medical intervention may be an option to consider. With the many challenges, a chronic illness often challenges selfawareness and management of psychological and social pieces. The chapters of this book are chronological and depict a sampling of episodes experienced in my life. Each chapter has a brief snapshot reflecting on the positive and negative. The consecutive chapters will not pick up where the other left off purposely, leaving the reader wondering what happened next. How would you react if placed in a similar situation? Would you make the necessary changes and move forward? Or let fate take control in dictating the outcome? The answer or choice may come easy, but would those decisions be as easy when influenced by a mental imbalance? This tell-all memoir surpasses one dimension and reads as autobiographic, poetic, self-motivational, self-aware, comedic, dramatic, nonfiction, and more. Diabetes, Cancer, and MS, to name a few, are all debilitating diseases where the physical breakdown of the individual becomes apparent to our peers. Inner Sanctum reveals what can transpire in the emotional piece when surviving a severe medical condition and the impact placed on the judgment and thought process. I am aware this book will be interpreted differently by many; some may be positive, others negative, and some may laugh, cry, or even mock, but ultimately, if my message gets out to the many who have experienced similar confrontations with mind over matter and chosen to create an inner sanctum, then my goal has been achieved and this book a success. Welcome to my world.

How advanced was the technology of ancient cultures? All this and more is covered in Exposed, Uncovered, & Declassified: Lost Civilizations & Secrets of the Past—the latest in the all-original series that is already sparking lively debate. Erich von Däniken, best-selling author of Chariots of the Gods, examines the Egyptian pyramids, studying their astronomical implications and what message they were meant to convey. Thomas G. Brophy, PhD, focuses on the mysterious Nabta Playa site in southern Egypt and its connection to African history. Intrepid explorer of ancient America Frank Joseph covers archeological scandals and attempts to suppress evidence, including the Smithsonian’s “loss” of Maya skulls discovered in the Aleutian Islands. Researcher Steven Sora, author of The Lost Colony, delves into evidence that Scotland’s Picts originated in North America and were connected to the ancient Micmac tribe of the Americas. Philip Coppens of the History Channel’s Ancient Aliens explores an ancient Celtic network of roads that may be connected to a 4,000-year-old land-based reproduction of Atlantis. Scholar and mystery explorer Oberon Zell-Ravenheart brings together the Garden of Eden, the Tree of Life, the great deluge, and the sinking of Lemuria. Marie D. Jones & Larry Flaxman (11:11: The Time Prompt Phenomenon) explore what ancient civilizations knew about sound and resonance, and how they may have used them to build megaliths and pyramids, and achieve altered states. Journalist Nick Redfern reveals the U.S. government’s abiding interest in our ancient past, religious mysteries, and enigmatic artifacts. Evidence of these ancient mysteries is everywhere—if you know what to look for. Whether you’re a believer, a skeptic, or somewhere in between, Exposed, Uncovered, and Declassified: Lost Civilizations & Secrets of the Past is sure to entertain and educate.

But Ali was just one of the many fighters who have shared momentous times with Hauser. For decades, elite fighters like Evander Holyfield, Manny Pacquiao, Roy Jones Jr., Bernard Hopkins, Ricky Hatton, Kelly Pavlik, Sergio Martínez, Jermain Taylor, Miguel Cotto, Gennady Golovkin, and Canelo Álvarez have welcomed him into their dressing rooms to record their journeys on fight night. Gathering and updating more than thirty essays from Hauser’s critically acclaimed yearly collections, In the Inner Sanctum celebrates these most dramatic hours in boxers’ lives. In each account, Hauser chronicles the very moment when a fighter’s physical well-being and financial future are on the line—when the fighter is most at risk and most alive.

Book excerpt: From a New York Times–bestselling author: A woman on the run hides a secret in this novel from “a consistently excellent voice in romantic suspense fiction” (RT Book Reviews). Port Flannery is a harbor town off the coast of Washington state—quiet, picturesque, and just big enough to hide in for a while. At least that’s what Emma Sands hopes when she takes a room above the local cafe. Here, no one knows why Emma and her young daughter fled New Orleans. No one can guess how terrified she is that the danger they left behind is drawing nearer every day. Emma is right to be scared. Even as she finds new friends and an unexpected ally in the rugged, compelling Sheriff Donnelly, it’s only a matter of time before her old life catches up. Because the obsession that drove her from the Big Easy will track her down, even in a place as Port Flannery. And this time, there will be nowhere left to run . . . “Susan Andersen keeps on delivering captivating and thrilling novels of dangerous love and dark suspense.” —RT Book Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having set aside age-old ways of mourning, how do people in the modern world cope with tragic loss? Using traditional mourning rituals as an instructive touchstone, Gail Holst-Warhaft explores the ways sorrow is managed in our own times and how mourning can be manipulated for social and political ends. Since ancient times political and religious authorities have been alert to the dangerously powerful effects of communal expressions of grief--while valuing mourning rites as a controlled outlet for emotion. But today grief is often seen as a psychological problem: the bereaved are encouraged to seek counseling or take antidepressants. At the same time, we have witnessed some striking examples of manipulation of shared grief for political effect. One instance is the unprecedented concentration on recovery of the remains of Americans killed in the Vietnam War. In Buenos Aires the Mothers of the Disappeared forged the passion of their grief into a political weapon. Similarly the gay community in the United States, transformed by grief and rage, not only lobbied effectively for AIDS victims but channeled their emotions into fresh artistic expression. It might be argued that, in contrast to earlier cultures, modern society has largely abdicated its role in managing sorrow. But in The Cue for Passion we see that some communities, moved by the intensity of their grief, have utilized it to gain ground for their own agendas.

The train is bombed and they desperately try to reach Warsaw one-step ahead of the advancing German armies. In Warsaw, the Polish Resistance Movement recruits Stena. Then, in the dangerous streets of Warsaw, in the crowded Ghetto, in the clandestine radio listening post, and in the dark forest of the Tatry Mountains, Stena fights for her and her sons survival using her wit, courage, and a medallion for luck. In Budapest, the Gestapo arrests Stena and her son joins up with a gang of orphan boys to hunt for food. As the Russian armies approach Budapest, Stena escapes from prison, and the son finds himself again in a boarding school. Together they weather the bitter winter and the ravages of war. A Russian captain arrests Stena, and the son runs away from his brutal headmaster to look for his mother. Mother and son find each other outside a Polish camp set up by the Russian Authorities. "I took out all the necessary papers that made me Madam Lattermant and you his son," says Stena, as they travel to a camp set up for the French. In Odessa, the Russian authorities refuse to recognize French citizenship acquired during the war. "Mother slipped into a deep-blue funk. Nobody could reach her not even Michel. Mother the once vibrant self-assured woman was melting away. I kept my distance. I didn't want to add to her misery," says the son.
