Book Synopsis The Laws of Innkeepers by : John E. H. Sherry
Download or read book The Laws of Innkeepers written by John E. H. Sherry and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 952 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the new, completely updated and expanded edition of the indispensable handbook used throughout the hospitality industry since The Laws of Innkeepers first appeared in 1972. Containing all the legal information essential to the successful operation of modern hotels, motels, inns, bed-and-breakfasts, clubs, restaurants, and resorts, the book has been extensively revised by John E. H. Sherry to accomodate the far-reaching changes that have occured since the publication of the revised edition in 1981. Sherry, a practicing lawyer and professor of hotel administration, carries over from the highly praised earlier editions detailed information on the rights and responsibilities of host and guest alike. He cites actual cases--ranging from the amusing and the bizarre to the tragic--as examples, and spells out in precise and readily understandable terms exactly what state and federal law says. Broadening the scope of the book to keep up with recent legal developments, the author includes many new case decisions and sumamries from various jurisdictions. Three chapters devoted to employment law, environmental law and land use, and catastrophic risk liability are among the highlights of the new material. These new sections present recent rulings and case law on such timely topics as age, disability, and AIDS discrimination, as well as sexual harassment; government regulation of toxic and hazardous substances and hotel and resort development; and acts of God and the Public Enemy and terrorism.

Download or read book Stranger Danger written by Paul M. Renfro and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with Etan Patz's disappearance in Manhattan in 1979, a spate of high-profile cases of missing and murdered children stoked anxieties about the threats of child kidnapping and exploitation. Publicized through an emerging twenty-four-hour news cycle, these cases supplied evidence of what some commentators dubbed "a national epidemic" of child abductions committed by "strangers." In this book, Paul M. Renfro narrates how the bereaved parents of missing and slain children turned their grief into a mass movement and, alongside journalists and policymakers from both major political parties, propelled a moral panic. Leveraging larger cultural fears concerning familial and national decline, these child safety crusaders warned Americans of a supposedly widespread and worsening child kidnapping threat, erroneously claiming that as many as fifty thousand American children fell victim to stranger abductions annually. The actual figure was (and remains) between one hundred and three hundred, and kidnappings perpetrated by family members and acquaintances occur far more frequently. Yet such exaggerated statistics-and the emotionally resonant images and narratives deployed behind them-led to the creation of new legal and cultural instruments designed to keep children safe and to punish the "strangers" who ostensibly wished them harm. Ranging from extensive child fingerprinting drives to the milk carton campaign, from the AMBER Alerts that periodically rattle Americans' smart phones to the nation's sprawling system of sex offender registration, these instruments have widened the reach of the carceral state and intensified surveillance practices focused on children. Stranger Danger reveals the transformative power of this moral panic on American politics and culture, showing how ideas and images of endangered childhood helped build a more punitive American state.

Book Synopsis The Management of Socioeconomic Safety by : Eugene Solozhentsev
Download or read book The Management of Socioeconomic Safety written by Eugene Solozhentsev and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces a new scientific approach to the economy and a new academic discipline titled “Socioeconomic safety management” (SSM) on the basis of the event approach and logical and probabilistic (LP) risk models. It addresses the definitions of invalidity in the economy through analogies with reliability in engineering. The special features and advantages of the discipline and its components are outlined here, with a specific focus on the methods, models, technologies, tasks, objects and software. New types of Boolean “events-propositions” in economy are also introduced, as are new types of risk LP-models. The examples of various types of socioeconomic systems provided here demonstrate that it is very difficult to solve socioeconomic problems without the involvement of scientists and public opinion; that the creation of top priority socioeconomic systems is impossible without reforms in education, science and the economy; and that the future development of the SSM requires the certification of special software. The book shows that economic efficiency can increase if, in conjunction with micro- and macroeconomics, the problems of socioeconomic safety management are explored. The book is intended for economists and managers who are interested in the problem of economic safety management. It will also be useful to undergraduate and postgraduate students of economics and their teachers.

Helen Crofton longs for a chance to show her new friends in the colonies everything she’s capable of. When she’s elected president of her charitable society, she convinces the other ladies that selling tarts is the best way for them to raise funds. There are just two small problems: Helen doesn’t actually know how to cook or run a business. Nathaniel Carter spent most of his life on the sea, working his way up from cabin boy to ship owner. He’s perfectly happy with his simple life and he certainly doesn’t need a woman to disrupt it. As Helen and Nathaniel work together, they’re shocked to discover the spark of attraction growing between them. Once the governor’s greedy son takes notice of their activities, Helen stands to lose all the money the society has earned while Nathaniel could lose his livelihood–or even his life! After some poor choices land a friend in jail for murder, they must learn to trust each other in order to save their friend and their fledgling relationship. No matter how much they’ve grown to care for each other, can two such different people ever make things work?
