California bears her full share, two millions being a reasonable estimate. Wise and timely application of well-known remedies would save much of this constant loss. Mr. E. O. Essig's signal success in the discovery and practice of control measures pointed him out as one fit to instruct the public as to the life histories of insects and the best methods to control their attacks. This led to the publication by the State Commission of Horticulture two years ago of "Injurious and Beneficial Insects of California." Anticipating a great demand for the book, a very large edition was issued. These anticipations were greatly exceeded, and very soon the edition was wholly exhausted. Commendation of the work was most hearty and reached the Commission from all countries, far and near. The call for another edition was loud and general. The Commission is greatly pleased to heed this request in the present enlarged and improved edition, which it feels sure will be very heartily welcomed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Insects Injurious to Fruit and Fruit Trees of the State of California: And Remedies Recommended for Their Extermination This was prepared in accordance with a resolution adopted by you at your November (1887) meeting. Some of the most destructive insects have been treated at some length, notably the fluted or cottony scale In the preparation of this treatise, the works of Professor Riley, Professor Com stock, and that of the late Matthew Cooke were freely made use of. I trust that this little publication will be judged charitably, as neither time nor knowledge has been sufficient to do justice to the undertaking. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects Injurious to Fruits It has been the aim of the author of this work to bring together all the important facts relating to insects known to be injurious to fruits in all parts of Canada and the United States, to add to the information thus obtained the knowl edge he has acquired of the habits and life-history of many of our insect pests by an experience of over twenty years as a fruit-grower and a student of entomology, and to pre sent the results in as concise and plain a manner as possible, avoiding all scientific phraseology except such as is necessary to accuracy. The arrangement adopted under the several headings, by which the insect pests which attack the different parts of the tree or vine under consideration are grouped together, will, it is hoped, with the aid of the illustrations, greatly facilitate the determination of any injurious species. When having before him its history briefly traced and the remedies which have been found most useful in subduing the insect, the reader will at once be enabled to decide as to the best meth ods to be employed. The author desires to make the fullest acknowledgment to those of whose work he has availed himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects, Injurious and Beneficial: Their Natural History and Classification The spiders (arachnida) usually have the body divided into two distinct, regions (fig. The head and thorax being merged into one part; the thorax and abdomen are frequently con nected by a slender stem or petiole. They do not past through any changes or metamorphoses before reaching the adult state. So far as at present known, all spiders are predaceous, feeding upon insects, etc.; and one south-american Species, of very large size, is said to catch small birds by creeping up, and Springing upon them, like a cat. The Mites and Ticks differ from the Spiders in having the three parts of the body closely united, as the Yellow Mite (fig. There being no distinct line of separation between the thorax and the abdomen. The young Mites are generally provided with six legs (fig. Some kinds feed upon the leaves, etc., of various plants; others feed upon the eggs of insects or upon young plant lice such as the Phylloxera Mite (fig. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Injurious Insects and Useful Birds, Successful Control of Farm Pests This book has been written in the hope of supplying the needs of high school where Agriculture is taught, and of Agricultural Colleges which demand a good text-book that is not too technical, and where the work embraces a large field in which there is a call for practical information and suggestions. It is intended also to supply farmers, orchardists, vegetable growers, owners of gardens, and housekeepers with a reference book for guidance in a campaign against injurious insects and four-footed pests of the farm, and to assist them in obtaining information about some of our more common birds in their relation to agriculture. The widespread and growing interest in this latter group of animals is not to be disregarded. The suggestions contained herein are largely the results of twenty-one years of work in Economic Entomology on the part of the author. Yet in so large a field one must of necessity have recourse to much experience not his own, and the author has not hesitated to obtain desired information from many reliable publications; such as bulletins and circulars from the United States Department of Agriculture, bulletins from the Geneva and the Cornell stations, and from all sections of the country. Many illustrations are from Minnesota State publications. I have also been favored by the kindness of others who have loaned their cuts. Courtesies of this kind, which are hereby gratefully acknowledged, have been extended by the Bureau of Entomology, United States Department of Agriculture; P. J. Parrott, of the New York (Geneva) station; Dr. G. W. Herrick, of the Cornell station; the California station; Professor G. H. Dean, of Kansas; C.P. Gillette, of Colorado; R. A. Cooley, of Montana; W. C. O'Kane, of New Hampshire; H. A. Morgan, of Tennessee; W. E. Britton, of Connecticut; and the Ohio station. For figures 324 and 326 the author is indebted to the Country Gentleman. Some illustrations of spraying apparatus were obtained from the Barnes Company and the Goulds Manufacturing Company. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects Injurious to the Household and Annoying to Man The present work is not intended as a treatise on the relation of insects to disease. The author's colleagues are now at work on a thorough and extended discussion of that phase of the subject. In the following pages, the writer devotes the principal part of the discussion to the habits, injuries, and control of insects simply as pests of the household and of man, contenting himself with a brief summary of the relation of insects to disease. It is hardly to be expected that SO brief a work will include all of the insect pests that may invade the household but an attempt has been made to discuss, at least, the most important ones with which our present knowledge makes us more or less familiar. The erroneous ideas and unnecessary fears prevalent regarding the poisonous nature Of certain insects and their near relatives and the interest evinced in this matter have seemed to warrant the addition of a chapter on this subject. In this discussion, the author has at tempted to state the Simple truth and to clear away, as far as existing knowledge makes it possible, the hazy and almost superstitious notions regarding the venomous qualities of these small animals.
