Book excerpt: Lymphatic Structure and Function in Health and Disease serves as a resource book on what has been learned about lymphatic structure, function and anatomy within different organ systems. This is the first book to bring together lymphatic medicine as a whole, with in-depth analysis of specific aspects of lymphatics in different vascular pathologies. This book is a useful tool for scientists, practicing clinicians and residents, in particular, those in vascular biology, neurology, cardiology and general medicine. Chapters discuss topics such as ontogeny and phylogeny of lymphatics, lymphatic pumping, CNS lymphatics, lymphatics in transplant and lymphatic reconstruction. - Brings together lymphatic medicine as a whole, with an in-depth analysis of the specific basic science aspects of lymphatic structure and function - Covers the clinical aspects of lymphatics in different vascular pathologies - Co-published with the International Society of Neurovascular Diseases - Discusses lymphatic structure and function in all of the major organ systems

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a practical approach for clinicians who work with patients afflicted with diseases of the lymphoid system and bone marrow. Associated biochemical, hematological, and chromosomal abnormalities, as well as infectious complications, are covered because of their importance in managing patients with lymphatic diseases. In addition, cell kinetics and the classification of lym phocytic lymphomas are included because familiarity with these subjects leads to a better understanding of the physiology of the disease. Radiological techniques that aid the clinician in the diagnosis and management of diseases of the lymphoid tissue are discussed. The explosive interest in patients with generalized acquired (auto) immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) prompted the inclusion of a chapter exclusively devoted to this topic. Finally, the chapter dealing with psychological aspects of patients with cancer allows the reader to become familiar with useful techniques. Distilled from a vast array of data and representing the most up-to-date material available, this volume is intended to be of interest to internists, oncolo gists, hematologists, radiotherapists, nurses, and anyone in an associated pa ramedical field who may be involved in the care of patients with diseases of the lymphatic system. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The partition of fluid between the vascular and interstitial compartments is regulated by forces (hydrostatic and oncotic) operating across the microvascular walls and the surface areas of permeable structures comprising the endothelial barrier to fluid and solute exchange, as well as within the extracellular matrix and lymphatics. In addition to its role in the regulation of vascular volume, transcapillary fluid filtration also allows for continuous turnover of water bathing tissue cells, providing the medium for diffusional flux of oxygen and nutrients required for cellular metabolism and removal of metabolic byproducts. Transendothelial volume flow has also been shown to influence vascular smooth muscle tone in arterioles, hydraulic conductivity in capillaries, and neutrophil transmigration across postcapillary venules, while the flow of this filtrate through the interstitial spaces functions to modify the activities of parenchymal, resident tissue, and metastasizing tumor cells. Likewise, the flow of lymph, which is driven by capillary filtration, is important for the transport of immune and tumor cells, antigen delivery to lymph nodes, and for return of filtered fluid and extravasated proteins to the blood. Given this background, the aims of this treatise are to summarize our current understanding of the factors involved in the regulation of transcapillary fluid movement, how fluid movements across the endothelial barrier and through the interstitium and lymphatic vessels influence cell function and behavior, and the pathophysiology of edema formation. Table of Contents: Fluid Movement Across the Endothelial Barrier / The Interstitium / The Lymphatic Vasculature / Pathophysiology of Edema Formation

Book excerpt: This book provides extensive knowledge of peripheral lymphedema, including the etiology and pathophysiology of the disease, as well as the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system and guide for the treatment of lymphedema to clinicians. The ultimate goal of lymphedema therapy is the targeted and individualized treatment. New technology of multimodality lymphatic imaging emerged in the recent years largely improves the diagnosis of lymphatic circulation disorders. The treatment of peripheral lymphedema is expected to have new achievement. This book illustrates the latest achievements in clinical and basic research of lymphedema to the clinical investigators as well as basic researchers. Pathogenesis of lymphatic system, diagnosis of lymphedema, treatment and further complication management are demonstrated in this book. Some special lymphedema related syndromes, issues on prevention and prognosis are also included.

This compendium begins by explaining the anatomical and physiological foundations of MLD. Simple, clear diagrams show the lymph pathways, and readers will be brought up to date with more current perspectives on the lymph systems. However, the emphasis is on the practical use of MLD. There is a large section devoted to lymphedema and therapy with photos of several different types of patients. Other chapters of the book are devoted to traumatic injuries, central nervous system disorders, dermatological conditions, rheumatic disorders and arthropathies. Practical aspects of MLD are dealt with in a separate section at the end of the book. Therapy strokes are described and photographed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publication of the Proceedings of the Fourth and Fifth International Congresses of Lymphology celebrates the 10th anni versary of the founding of the International Society of Lymphology, a SOO-member scientific association representing the world's fore most authorities on lymph nodes, lymphatics, lymphocytes, and lymph in health and disease. Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach and a wide variety of techniques including visualization, interruption, ablation, diversion, sampling, and characterization of regional lymph and lymphatic pathways, Congress participants from more than 40 different nations delved into such varied topics as lymphatic spread of cancer, tumor immunology, propulsion of lymph, microcir culatory physiology, improved methods of tumor detection and diag nosis, electron microscopy of lymphatic capillaries, lymphoscopy, immunoprotein chemistry, relationship of viruses to neoplasia, radiotherapy of lymphomas, structure and function of normal and abnormal lymphocytes, transplantation biology, lymphvascular sur gery, edema including lymphedema and effusion, portal hypertension, filariasis, congenital lymphatic malformations, and protein-losing enteropathy and nephropathy. Only a few years after William Harvey discovered the circula tion of blood, Gaspar Asellius "discovered" the lymphatic system. When asked in the twilight of his career to enter the raging con troversy about this new circulation, Harvey responded, "It is useless for you to spur me to gird myself to any new investigations seeing now that I am not only ripe in years but also weary. It seems to me indeed that I am entitled to ask for my honorable dis charge from duty.
