Last published in 1976, this version of the standard industry reference on plastics processing incorporates the numerous revisions and additions necessitated by 14 years of activity in a dynamic industry. At that last printing, then-SPI President Ralph L. Harding, Jr. anticipated that plastics pro duction would top 26 billion pounds in 1976 (up from 1.25 billion in 1947, when the First Edition of this book was issued). As I write, plastics production in the United States had reached almost 60 billion pounds annually. Indeed, the story of the U.S. plastics industry always has been one of phenomenal growth and unparalleled innovation. While these factors make compilation of a book such as this difficult, they also make it necessary. Thus I acknowledge all those who worked to gather and relate the information included in this 1991 edition and thank them for the effort it took to make the Plastics Engineering Handbook a definitive source and invaluable tool for our industry. Larry L. Thomas President The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc.

Book excerpt: During the years 1987 and 1988 we published a series of articles on the molding of thermoplastics materials in the magazine British Plastics and Rubber (B P & R). These articles were very well received and we also received a large number of requests for reprints. In order to cater for what is obviously a need in the thermoplas tics molding industry, we therefore brought the information together and produced it in the form of a book. We can only hope that it serves you well and that you find the information useful. We in turn would like to thank the editor of the magazine B P & R for helping us in this matter. Thanks are also due to our many friends and colleagues throughout the molding industry for their useful help and advice, in particular the company Moldflow (Europe) Limited deserve a special mention as they allowed us to extract information from their extensive data base.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authoritative introduction to all aspects of plastics engineering — offering both academic and industry perspectives in one complete volume. Introduction to Plastics Engineering provides a self-contained introduction to plastics engineering. A unique synergistic approach explores all aspects of material use — concepts, mechanics, materials, part design, part fabrication, and assembly — required for converting plastic materials, mainly in the form of small pellets, into useful products. Thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers, and advanced composites, the four disparate application areas of polymers normally treated as separate subjects, are covered together. Divided into five parts — Concepts, Mechanics, Materials, Part Processing and Assembly, and Material Systems — this inclusive volume enables readers to gain a well-rounded, foundational knowledge of plastics engineering. Chapters cover topics including the structure of polymers, how concepts from polymer physics explain the macro behavior of plastics, evolving concepts for plastics use, simple mechanics principles and their role in plastics engineering, models for the behavior of solids and fluids, and the mechanisms underlying the stiffening of plastics by embedded fibers. Drawing from his over fifty years in both academia and industry, Author Vijay Stokes uses the synergy between fundamentals and applications to provide a more meaningful introduction to plastics. Examines every facet of plastics engineering from materials and fabrication methods to advanced composites Provides accurate, up-to-date information for students and engineers both new to plastics and highly experienced with them Offers a practical guide to large number of materials and their applications Addresses current issues for mechanical design, part performance, and part fabrication Introduction to Plastics Engineering is an ideal text for practicing engineers, researchers, and students in mechanical and plastics engineering and related industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Injection molding of engineering thermoplastics is the most widely used manufacturing method in industry. It is a priority to maintain a deviation-free operating environment to ensure high quality, low cost manufacture. An expert system for the injection molding of engineering thermoplastics has been investigated. The system can be used to attenuate the deviations experienced during the injection molding of engineering thermoplastics. The system is coded in C programming language. The resolution procedures of this system include two stages such as the definition of declarative knowledge and the procedure of corrective actions. In the definition of declarative knowledge, all of the necessary information is collected for firing the inference engine. This information includes the material type, the material manufacturer, the material grade, the recommended operating conditions, the operating conditions, the deviation type, and the correlative weighting factors. The, procedure of corrective action is classified by fishbone diagram into four different levels. These levels include and are ranked as method corrective actions, operating variable corrective actions, mold corrective actions, and material corrective actions. The rule values of the corrective action in each level are assigned to determine the rank for employing these corrective actions. Among, those rule values, the rule values of the method corrective actions, of the mold corrective actions, and of the material corrective actions are determined by the degree of difficulty required to eliminate the deviation and the input of the molding experts. A decision algorithm is developed to calculate the priority weighting, factors, rule values, of each operating variable corrective action. Furthermore, the Pareto principle is introduced to analyze the control parameters of the decision algorithm. During the interactive procedures of eliminating the deviation, the system provides an explanation function for each step. It allows the system to illustrate the reason for each action to the user. A self-learning mechanism is also developed in this study. This self-learning mechanism based on the response of the resolution results modifies the parameters which influence the sequence of the corrective actions. The system has been examined by experts in the field of injection molding. It is recognized that the system not only provides reasonable resolution sequences for eliminating the deviation, but also, accurate suggested actions for the user. Furthermore, the resolution actions have been simulated in the injection molding filling package MOLDFLOW. This confirms that the resolution actions can actually influence the parameters which can eliminate or reduce the deviations.
