Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Franz Joseph Gall, a dedicated physician and scientist, is unfortunately most remembered for his controversial doctrine that would become known as phrenology. Although often portrayed as a discredited buffoon who believed he could assess a person's strengths and weaknesses by measuring cranial bumps, Gall strove to answer pressing questions about the mind, brain, and behavior. His career began in Vienna during the 1790s and ended with his death in Paris in 1828. This work presents a fresh look at Gall, both his life and seminal ideas, some of which--for example, cortical localization of function--would become tenets of modern behavioral neuroscience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our doctrine does not pretend to be the intellectual vision of a great plan or of a design, but it is merely a method of research and of conception. It is not by accident that Marx spoke of his discovery as a guiding thread, and it is precisely for this reason that it is analogous to Darwinism, which also is a method...-from "Historical Materialism"One of the great European Marxists-in this volume, published in Italy in 1896 and in America in 1908-commemorates the then-upcoming 50th anniversary of Marx's Communist Manifesto, "our first unquestioned entrance into history." Explaining and elaborating upon Marx's philosophies, Labriola applies scientific and practical philosophy to Marxism, offering significant clarification, in layman's terms, of the Manifesto. Students of European and American socialism will find this an invaluable document, evidence of a fulcrum moment in global history, when socialism's prospects were far brighter than they are today.Philosopher and revolutionary ANTONIO LABRIOLA (1843-1904) is considered the father of Italian Marxism. Born in Cassino, Italy, he was educated at the University of Naples and wrote for numerous liberal political journals. Among his books are Problems of the Philosophy of History and Socialism (1889) and Correspondence on Philosophy and Socialism (1898).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is more to education than teaching and learning, and more to anthropology than making studies of other people’s lives. Here Tim Ingold argues that both anthropology and education are ways of studying, and of leading life, with others. In this provocative book, he goes beyond an exploration of the interface between the disciplines of anthropology and education to claim their fundamental equivalence. Taking inspiration from the writings of John Dewey, Ingold presents his argument in four close-knit chapters. Education, he contends, is not the transmission of authorised knowledge from one generation to the next but a way of attending to things, opening up paths of growth and discovery. What does this mean for the ways we think about study and the school, teaching and learning, and the freedoms they exemplify? And how does it bear on the practices of participation and observation, on ways of study in the field and in the school, on art and science, research and teaching, and the university? Written in an engaging and accessible style, this book is intended as much for educationalists as for anthropologists. It will appeal to all who are seeking alternatives to mainstream agendas in social and educational policy, including educators and students in philosophy, the social sciences, educational psychology, environmentalism and arts practice.

Book excerpt: This work is a comparative study of nineteenth-century English-Canadian and French Canadian novel prefaces, a previously unexplored literary topic. As a study in Comparative Literature - with the application of a specific literary framework and methodology - the study conforms to theoretical and methodological postulates formulated in and prescribed by this framework when applied. This a priori postulate necessitates that the research on and the presentation of the Canadian novel preface be carried out in a specific manner, as follows. First, the study will establish the hypothesis that the preface to nineteenth-century English-Canadian and French-Canadian novels is a genre in its own right. This hypothesis will rest on the following: 1) a taxonomical survey of related terms meaning "preface"; 2) a survey of secondary Iiterature of works dealing with the preface; 3) a discussion of the theoretical framework and methodology of the Empirical Theory of Literature and its appropriateness for the study of the preface; and 4) a discussion of the process of the compilation of the corpus of nineteenth-century Canadian novel prefaces (Chapter one). In a second step, the theoretical postulate outlined in the hypothesis will be put into practice by the development and production of a preface typology (Chapter two). In a third step, further tenets of the Empirical Theory of Literature will be tested on the corpus of the prefaces (Chapter three). In a fourth step, the prefaces will be analysed following the tenets formulated in and prescribed by the systemic framework applied (Chapter four).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the concept of history began, humans undoubtedly acquired life benefits by discovering medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) that were food and medicine. Today, a variety of available herbs and spices are used and enjoyed throughout the world and continue to promote good health. The international market is also quite welcoming for MAPs and essential oils. The increasing environment and nature conscious buyers encourage producers to produce high quality essential oils. These consumer choices lead to growing preference for organic and herbal based products in the world market. As the benefits of medicinal and aromatic plants are recognized, these plants will have a special role for humans in the future. Until last century, the production of botanicals relies to a large degree on wild-collection. However, the increasing commercial collection, largely unmonitored trade, and habitat loss lead to an incomparably growing pressure on plant populations in the wild. Therefore, medicinal and aromatic plants are of high priority for conservation. Given the above, we bring forth a comprehensive volume, “Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Healthcare and Industrial Applications”, highlighting the various healthcare, industrial and pharmaceutical applications that are being used on these immensely important MAPs and its future prospects. This collection of chapters from the different areas dealing with MAPs caters to the need of all those who are working or have interest in the above topic.
