Book excerpt: The use of lasers which emit infra-red radiation and sophisticated detectors of IR radiation is increasing dramatically: they are being used for long-distance fibre-optic communications and remote environmental monitoring and sensing. Thus they are of interest to the telecommunications industry and the military in particular. This book has been designed to bring together what is known on these devices, using an international group of contributors.
Book Synopsis Process Models for Infrared Focal Plane Array Flexible Manufacturing by :
Download or read book Process Models for Infrared Focal Plane Array Flexible Manufacturing written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this work is to assist industry in its efforts to devise a flexible manufacturing means for production of high performance Hg(1-x)Cd(x)Te-based focal plane arrays at reduced costs. The program has focused on the properties of impurities and native defects in the material, and how they subsequently impact the device performance. We find that the cation vacancy is a single acceptor in x = 0.2 material, contrary to previous findings. We have explained the inactive incorporation of the group VII elements under mercury-deficient conditions. We have shown that the group I elements have a large fraction of interstitial incorporation, thereby explaining their fast diffusion. We have predicted a model for the amphoteric behavior of arsenic, and have explained its behavior in liquid phase epitaxy from both the tellurium-melts and the mercury-melts. Annealing strategies for activation arsenic as a p-type dopant following growth by molecular beam epitaxy have also been suggested. Our modeling of the MBE growth surface indicates that growth rates are fastest on the?211] B surface, but that there will be fewer grown-in defects on the?211] A surface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Defense recently highlighted intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities as a top priority for U.S. warfighters. Contributions provided by ISR assets in the operational theaters in Iraq and Afghanistan have been widely documented in press reporting. While the United States continues to increase investments in ISR capabilities, other nations not friendly to the United States will continue to seek countermeasures to U.S. capabilities. The Technology Warning Division of the Defense Intelligence Agency's (DIA) Defense Warning Office (DWO) has the critical responsibility, in collaborations with other components of the intelligence community (IC), for providing U.S. policymakers insight into technological developments that may impact future U.S. warfighting capabilities. To this end, the IC requested that the National Research Council (NRC) investigate and report on key visible and infrared detector technologies, with potential military utility, that are likely to be developed in the next 10-15 years. This study is the eighth in a series sponsored by the DWO and executed under the auspices of the NRC TIGER (Technology Insight-Gauge, Evaluate, and Review) Standing Committee.
Book Synopsis Expanding the Vision of Sensor Materials by : National Research Council
Download or read book Expanding the Vision of Sensor Materials written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-07-22 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in materials science and engineering have paved the way for the development of new and more capable sensors. Drawing upon case studies from manufacturing and structural monitoring and involving chemical and long wave-length infrared sensors, this book suggests an approach that frames the relevant technical issues in such a way as to expedite the consideration of new and novel sensor materials. It enables a multidisciplinary approach for identifying opportunities and making realistic assessments of technical risk and could be used to guide relevant research and development in sensor technologies.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Infrared Detector Materials by : Michael A. Kinch
Download or read book Fundamentals of Infrared Detector Materials written by Michael A. Kinch and published by SPIE Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The choice of available infrared (IR) detectors for insertion into modern IR systems is both large and confusing. The purpose of this volume is to provide a technical database from which rational IR detector selection criteria evolve, and thus clarify the options open to the modern IR system designer. Emphasis concentrates mainly on high-performance IR systems operating in a tactical environment, although there also is discussion of both strategic environments and low- to medium-performance system requirements.

Download or read book Resonant Infrared Detectors And Emitters written by Kwong-kit Choi and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2024-05-24 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a sequel of The Physics of Quantum Well Infrared Photodetectors (1997), which covered the basic physics of QWIPs. In the intervening 27 years, QWIP properties pertinent to infrared detection are much better understood, and QWIP technology has become a mainstream, widely deployed infrared technology. The main progress is the ability to know the QWIP absorption quantum efficiency quantitatively through rigorous electromagnetic modeling. The lack of theoretical prediction has impeded QWIP development for a long time. Generally, an arbitrary choice of detector structures yields substantial variations of absorption properties, and QWIP was regarded as a low quantum efficiency detector. With the advent of electromagnetic modeling, quantum efficiency of any detector geometry can be known exactly and be optimized to attain a large satisfactory value. Consequently, all properties of QWIPs are predictable, not unlike prevailing silicon devices. This unique characteristic enables QWIP to be the most manufacturable long wavelength infrared technology in mass production. This book by K K Choi, a co-inventor of QWIPs, will capture this exciting development.Based on the materials expounded in the book, the reader will know key performance metrics in infrared detection, in-depth knowledge of QWIP material and structural designs, array production, its application, and practical knowledge of electromagnetic modeling. In addition, the book will describe using micro- and nano-structures to enhance the emission properties of active and passive optical emitters, similar to detectors. The application of rigorous electromagnetic modeling to optical emitters is new to the optoelectronic community. The resonator-pixel emitter structure with its modeling method will no doubt be able to attract substantial academic and industrial attention in years to come.
