Book excerpt: This book represents a compendium of the twenty most useful far-infrared (or submillimeter) lasers. In the case of each laser described here, we have been fortunate to have the author who is the pioneer and acknowledged authority describe the principles of operation and to prepare the list of emission lines. Until these lasers were developed during the past decade, the submillimeter range of the spectrum has been almost barren due to lack of sources of radiation. The lasers described here remain the only practical, powerful source of radiation between the wavelengths of one millimeter and ten micrometers. Many hundreds of emission lines have been listed here, some providing hundreds of kilowatts of peak power in pulsed operation, others providing many tens of milliwatts of continuous power. The hundreds of wavelengths of the emission lines are so closely spaced in the wavelength range between one millimeter and one-tenth millimeter that this source of radiation can be considered to be step-tunable. Of course, labora tory scientists still depend upon the black body source (mercury vapor lamp) and the Fourier transform spectrometer to provide con tinuous spectra, but for this we must deal with true energy starva tion at the sub-microwatt level. This critical review can be expected to serve as a handbook for decades in the future because it contains descriptions of fundamen tal principles and listings of fundamental physical data.

Book excerpt: Lasers continue to be an amazingly robust field of activity. Anyone seeking a photon source is now confronted with an enormous number of possible lasers and laser wavelengths to choose from, but no single, comprehensive source to help them make that choice. The Handbook of Lasers provides an authoritative compilation of lasers, their properties, and original references in a readily accessible form. Organized by lasing media-solids, liquids, and gases-each section is subdivided into distinct laser types. Each type carries a brief description, followed by tables listing the lasing element or medium, host, lasing transition and wavelength, operating properties, primary literature citations, and, for broadband lasers, reported tuning ranges. The importance and value of the Handbook of Lasers cannot be overstated. Serving as both an archive and as an indicator of emerging trends, it reflects the state of knowledge and development in the field, provides a rapid means of obtaining reference data, and offers a pathway to the literature. It contains data useful for comparison with predictions and for developing models of processes, and may reveal fundamental inconsistencies or conflicts in the data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topics in Millimeter Wave Technology is a compendium of papers dealing with plasma waves, TUNNETT diodes, and solid-state devices. One paper describes the application of the TUNNET diode, a semiconductor with a coherent signal source of over 100 GHz to 1000 GHz. The paper notes the possibility of achieving more than 1000 GHz through sophisticated device fabrication technology. Another paper discusses the use of computer-aided testing of superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) junction whose mixing properties are effected by the ski-sloped shape of the current-voltage curve. Such testing methods are useful at fixed or variable temperatures from 15 K to 300 K. One paper reviews the collective Thomson scattering theory, including the application of the multichannel far-infrared scattering system in the basic tokamak plasma physics. Another paper discusses the static induction transistor for very high frequency operation as the millimeter to submillimeter wave region is the ideal static induction transistor in ballistic devices. This review material can be helpful for nuclear scientists, nuclear engineers, students of physics, and researchers involved in plasma physics and semiconductor technology.

This book discusses the various uses of superconducting devices in many areas where their sensitivity, speed, or other characteristics stemming from the unique nature of superconductivity make them the device of choice. Organized into 10 chapters, this book begins with an overview of superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), which is the main achievement of superconductor electronics. This text then examines the status of dc and rf SQUIDs. Other chapters consider the progress in the fabrication technology for high-quality junctions and it integration technology, which are developed mainly for digital applications. This book discusses as well the increasing need for compact submillimeter sources for use in such applications as satellite communications and receivers for astronomical observation. The final chapter deals with the thin film tunneling experiments. This book is a valuable resource for physicists, chemists, materials scientists, and electrical engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the surprising discovery of superconductivity at temperatures above 100 K, this field was not only brought into the public eye, but also stimulated research in universities, scientific institutions and industry, thus continuing the fascinating development which began with the discovery of the Josephson effect in the sixties. Cryoelectronics has become a special branch of cryophysics and cryotechnics and today plays a prominent role whenever high resolution and precision measurements are required. Motivated by this development, seven years ago scientists working in cryoelectronics in the Federal Republic of Germany felt the necessity for regular meetings allowing a free exchange of ideas and results achieved. Seminars under the title of "Kryoelektronische Bauelemente" were held for the first time at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig in 1982 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Walther MeiBner, a pioneer in superconductivity. Since then, meetings have been held every year at different venues in Germany. It is now felt that the status of this field necessitates a review of the results of the past, a description of the current state of the art, and a discussion of future perspectives. This book, entitled SUPERCONDUCTING QUANTUM ELECTRONICS is a collection of invited lectures and contributions which will inform the reader on the most interesting problems involving fundamentals, sensitive detectors and precision metrology being studied by different groups.

Book excerpt: I am most pleased and, in a way, I feel honored to write the Foreword for the book The Hanle Effect and Level-Crossing Spectroscopy, which covers such a very wide range of applications not only in the initial areas of atomic and molecular physics, but also in solid state physics, solar physics, laser physics, and gravitational metrology. To link these fields together in a coherent way has been the merit of the editors of the book, who attracted most distinguished authors for writing the chapters. In retrospect to Hanle's discovery of quantum mechanical coherence between two quantum states about 65 years ago, this book demonstrates the enormous impact and central importance the effect has had, and most vividly still has, on modern physics. On the other hand, the concept of quantum mechanical coherence, which is an outgrowth of the linear super position principle of quantum states, has been evident through a consider able number of experimental methods beyond the original Hanle effect; some of these methods were only recently discovered or applied and they have indeed revolutionized research fields such as atomic collision physics.
