Book excerpt: The anesthetist-computer interface tends to be a problem for the utilization of computer systems for anesthesia. Ergonomic interface design with an emphasis on the coherency of the interface's static and dynamic structure may improve this situation. To investigate this proposition we developed an Anesthesia Information System (AIS) with a touch-sensitive monitor as the hardware-user interface. Basic data input and system control techniques were defined and implemented. Record keeping is integrated into the user interface. Ventilator control from the same interface is an additional feature for laboratory simulations. The system is being evaluated using a technique that simulates live operations. Book excerpt: In April of 1991, 425 partICIpants from 18 countries met in Hamamatsu in Japan for the 6th International Symposium on Computing in Anesthesia and Intensive Care (lSCAIC). The meeting was one of the most spectacular academic and fruitful in the history of ISCAIC. We had four days of fascinating presentations and discussions covering many areas of technology in Anesthesia and intensive care. New technologies were presented and old technology reexamined. The measures of success of the meeting were the excellent research material in oral and poster presentations, and state of the art reviews of the latest issues by distinguished worldwide key speakers. It must be sure that the meeting was most effective to promote and disseminate up-to-date information in these fields across the participating countries. The aim of this book is to record the exciting achievements of the meeting and extend them further among our colleagues. We hope the readers of this book will share the same excitation as well as the latest information in this speciality. Finally we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all participants and others for the contribution to the compilation of this book. Kazuyuki Ikeda, M.D.

Book excerpt: In modern medicine the most functional methodologies are taking an increasing importance in spreading informations, rendering it credible while at the same time using reliable data to focus interaction between basic science and clinical medicine. Critical care medicine embraces these needs and more than any other discipline thrives and develops thanks to interdisciplinary contact. APICE 2004 has been organised to provide precise answers to these issues. In particular, considerable emphasis has been given to the reviews regarding the most important aspects - or the most significant clinical developments - in the sectors involving variety of functions: neurological, respiratory and cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, metabolism and perfusion; trauma infections, sepsis and organ failure; perioperative medicine and life support techniques; information technology dedicated to clinical medicine, but also as a means of information and education. The contributing authors are all part of leading research groups at the international level in the various sectors presented in the volume.

Book excerpt: This book is based on a selection of the most original articles published in the past year on new technological advances in the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases. The authors of these papers were invited to contribute to this volume with critical reviews of their recent results and a discussion of the clinical implications of these findings. Technical innovations in the treatment of respiratory diseases involve many aspects from basic physics to pathophysiology and clinical experience in pulmonary and critical care medicine. The book therefore covers a broad spectrum of topics including mechanical ventilation, ventilator modes, new pharmacological treatments during ventilation, prevention of ventilator-associated infections, technologies in anesthesiology, pulmonary rehabilitation, telemonitoring in pediatric and neonatal critical care and assistance in chronic respiratory failure. Diagnostic methods such as polysomnography and ultrasound are considered as well as cardiopulmonary resuscitation methods and new options in inhalation therapies. Furthermore, the role of the environment in respiratory health problems is analyzed, and organizational issues in disaster management and intensive care are highlighted. Intended to help clinicians understand the highly technological diagnostic and therapeutic methods available today, this book will be indispensable for anyone caring for children or adults with respiratory problems, both in the ICU and in daily practice.

This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in intensive and critical care medicine occur rapidly. Innovation, training and research are the pillars that support a process deriving from basic science and multiprofessional/multidisciplinary interventions. The APICE 2010 Yearbook highlights several innovations for optimising prevention and management measures for the critically ill by integrating diagnostic procedures with pharmacological and technological options. Considering that cerebral, respiratory, cardiovascular, renal and metabolic dysfunctions occurring during serious illnesses or syndromes represent risk factors for patient survival, the final goal remains multifaceted: to improve standards and quality of care; to introduce the expanding concept of clinical governance and professionalism; to focus on the importance of ethical principles for establishing a process of patient-centered and evidence-based care. For these reasons, medical professionals must reach a consensus regarding the importance of continuing medical education.

Book excerpt: This volume, the second in a series on topics in microcomputers in critical care and pulmonary physiology,' contains the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Computers in Critical Care and Pulmonary Medicine, held at the University of Lund in 1980 under the.,chairmanship of Prof. B. Jonson, M.D., Department of Clinical Physiology, University of Lund, Sweden. Clinicians and biomedical engineers from many countries parti cipated in a three day deliberation. Of special interest was the introduction of nuclear techniques in pulmonary medicine for the first time in this symposium series. It is the intention of the steering committee that such meetings should take place on an annual basis in the rapidly changing world of the science and technology of computing in clinical care, in prac tice and in pulmonary medicine. Editorial modification of the papers in this volume has been kept to a minimum. Changes have been made to ensure some uniformity in presentation and there has been some alteration of the English to avoid ambiguity, but our intervention has gone no further than that. It is hoped that the contents of this volume will enable those who are interested in the subject matter to be more aware of research developments occurring in so many different disciplines and so many different centres in America and Europe. Finally, I would like to thank Miss Bodil Richardson for her or ganisational and secretarial help. Thanks are also due to Prof. J.P.

Extraordinary progress in the use of computers in critical care medicine and pulmonary function testing is evident in the presen tations. I would like to thank the members of the Steering Committee and the International Advisory Committee for their efforts in bring ing together many leaders in the field, and enriching the symposium with their own contributions. My special thanks to Mr. Norman Brady, President of the Norwalk Hospital, for his generous hospitality and his untiring assistance during the three days of the symposium. I would also like to thank Martin H. Floch, M.D., Chairman of the Department of Medicine, Norwalk Hospital, for his advice and support. I sincerely appreciate the cooperation and help from the members of the Section of Pulmonary Medicine and Medical Computer Science of the Norwalk Hospital. Finally I would like to thank Ms. Nancy Smith for the excellent work in the preparation of the manuscripts, and the staff of the Plenum Press for their help in publishing this volume.
