Book excerpt: Prior to 1964 information scientists entered library schools, they brought with them competencies in relation to information retrieval in subject databases, Subject bibliographic databases and citation indexes provided a major step forward in information dissemination. What is described here is a view of social fields as dynamic and changing. LIS is viewed as a field that started as a multidisciplinary field based on literature, psychology, sociology, management, computer science, etc., which is developing towards an academic discipline in its own right. As a field with its own body of interrelated concepts, techniques, journals, and professional associations, LIS is clearly a discipline. But by the nature of its subject matter and methods, LIS is just as clearly interdisciplinary, drawing on many adjacent fields. What is described here is a view of social fields as dynamic and changing. Library and information science is viewed as a field that started as a multidisciplinary field based on literature, psychology, sociology, management, computer science, etc., which is developing towards an academic discipline in its own right. The present research-oriented book entitled ‘Current Trends in Library and Information Science’ is devised with the sole intention to highlight modern libraries from different technical perspectives. As such essays of varied nature pertaining to the library and information science are compiled in this volume. The publication is meant for library professionals. Contents: • Digital Research Tools in Library • Analysis of Information Systems in Library • Trends and Issues in Information Science • Online Information Retrieval • Main Elements of Electronic Libraries • Guidelines for Software and System Selection • Libraries and the Internet • Electronic Technologies for Libraries • Resource Sharing through Internet

This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of technology and the hunger for information has caused a wave of change in daily life in America. Nearly every American's environment now consists of cable television, video cassette players, answering machines, fax machines, and personal computers. Schement and Curtis argue that the information age has evolved gradually throughout the twentieth century. National focus on the production and distribution of information stems directly from the organizing principles and realities of the market system, not from a revolution sparked by the invention of the computer. Now available in paperback, Tendencies and Tensions of the Information Age, brings together findings from many disciplines, including classical studies, etymology, political sociology, and macroeconomics. This valuable resource will be enjoyed by sociologists, historians, and scholars of communication and information studies.

The product of four years of development with input from more than 200 earth-science specialists, the volume offers a wealth of historical background and current information on: Plate tectonics, volcanism, and other heat-generated earth processes. Evolution of our global environment and of life itself, as revealed in the fossil record. Human exploitation of water, fossil fuels, and minerals. Interaction between human populations and the earth's surface, discussing the role we play in earth's systems and the dangers we face from natural hazards such as earthquakes and landslides. This volume offers a comprehensive look at how earth science is currently practiced and what should be done to train professionals and adequately equip them to find the answers necessary to manage more effectively the earth's systems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late sixteenth century, the English started expanding westward, establishing control over parts of neighboring Ireland as well as exploring and later colonizing distant North America. Audrey Horning deftly examines the relationship between British colonization efforts in both locales, depicting their close interconnection as fields for colonial experimentation. Focusing on the Ulster Plantation in the north of Ireland and the Jamestown settlement in the Chesapeake, she challenges the notion that Ireland merely served as a testing ground for British expansion into North America. Horning instead analyzes the people, financial networks, and information that circulated through and connected English plantations on either side of the Atlantic. In addition, Horning explores English colonialism from the perspective of the Gaelic Irish and Algonquian societies and traces the political and material impact of contact. The focus on the material culture of both locales yields a textured specificity to the complex relationships between natives and newcomers while exposing the lack of a determining vision or organization in early English colonial projects.

Book excerpt: The word ‘data’ has entered everyday conversation, but do we really understand what it means? How can we begin to grasp the scope and scale of our new data-rich world, and can we truly comprehend what is at stake? In Data Lives, renowned social scientist Rob Kitchin explores the intricacies of data creation and charts how data-driven technologies have become essential to how society, government and the economy work. Creatively blending scholarly analysis, biography and fiction, he demonstrates how data are shaped by social and political forces, and the extent to which they influence our daily lives. He reveals our data world to be one of potential danger, but also of hope.
