Book excerpt: Biomass production was compared to site index ratings for fully stocked natural 10 to 80 year-old balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.)-spruce (Picea glauca (Moench.) Voss, P. rubens Sarg., P. marianna (Mill) B.S.P.) stands that occurred on four soils of the Chesuncook Catena: Elliottsville (well drained), Chesuncook (moderately well), Telos (somewhat poorly), and Monarda (poorly). Regression equations were developed to predict the total dry weight and component weights of individual trees, and were applied to standing trees to predict total stand biomass. Crown dimensions were analyzed to determine foliage distribution. Total height and breast height age data were collected from dominant trees on plots, and stem analysis was performed on selected individuals to develop site index curves for each soil by species. Stand height and density data were analyzed among soil groups by age class. The Chesuncook-Elliottsville soil grouping produced the highest site index for both spruce and fir, followed by Telos and Monarda, respectively. The curves followed a polymorphic pattern and did not cross. The mean stand diameter and average heights of the dominant and codominant trees increase with improved soil drainage. The number of trees per acre decrease with increase in drainage. Total biomass production was not significantly different among all soil groups until about age 60 years, after which the biomass production on the better drained Chesuncook and Elliottsville soils surpasses that of the poorer drained Telos and Monarda soils. Biomass production was not significantly different between stands on these latter two soils over the measured lifetimes of the stands. Within each soil grouping, biomass production remained constant over the range of site index for the Telos-Monarda soil grouping. However, biomass production decreased with increasing site index for the Chesuncook-Elliottsville soil grouping. No consistent relationship was found between site index and total biomass. Total biomass of merchantable trees increased with improved soil drainage.

Book excerpt: S2A greenhouse experiment was conducted to study the effects of soil water level on growth, biomass accretion, and inorganic element uptake by black spruce. One-year-old containerized seedlings were grown for 3 years at three water table depths. All trees survived for the duration of the study confirming that black spruce has a certain degree of survival tolerance to high water tables. However, tree height, diameter growth, and biomass production significantly increased as the depth to water table increased. The foliar levels of N, P, K, Mg, Fe, Zn, and B increased and those of Cu and Mn decreased with the increasing depth to the water table. For ash and Ca, differences were significant but did not follow a consistent trend. In shoots, the level of N, Ca, and Mg increased and those of ash, K, Fe, Cu, B, Al, and Mn decreased with the increasing depth to the water table. The level of P was not affected by the water table. In roots, the level of N and Ca increased and the level of ash, Mn, Fe, Al, and Cu decreased with increasing depth to the water table. The level of P, Mg, and Zn was significantly different but did not follow any trend. Foliar concentration of ash, Ca, Na, Mn, Fe, Zn, Cu, Al, and B increased and concentration of N, P, K, and Mg decreased with the increasing foliage age. In shoots, ash, Ca, Al, Fe, and Zn increased and N, P, K, Mg, and B decreased with the increasing tree and shoot age. In roots, Fe, Mn, Na, and Al increased and N, P, and Cu decreased with the increasing tree age.S3.
