Book excerpt: This liber amicorum honours Professor Jan Tissot van Patot as a scholar, referring in particular to his concern with transport economics. The signi ficance of his work grew out of his influence within Netherlands Railways as, with the passage of the years, he dedicated himself increasingly to the vastly wider field of transport economics. I would emphasize, however, that his theoretical knowledge and views in wider contexts have also been of great value to Netherlands Railways, and I greatly appreciate this opport unity of referring to this aspect in a few personal words. It is characteristic both of his person and his attitude that his work was often the occasion for contacts of a more personal nature, contacts which were profoundly marked by his philosophy and convictions. Our relations date from more than thirty-seven years ago, when he asked me for a con tribution for a magazine which he helped to edit at that time and which was concerned with the same field as I was. We became colleagues when he entered the service of NS, the Netherlands Railways. His sphere of work at that time was such that he was consulted more and more frequently by others. His particular value to NS has been the increased dimension of transport policy and decision making he added to the company's existing policy and decision making.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Environmental Impact Assessment, Volume 2 by : Judith Petts
Download or read book Handbook of Environmental Impact Assessment, Volume 2 written by Judith Petts and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a significant, anticipatory, environmental management tool. International debate focuses on its enhancement to meet the challenges of sustainable development as well as demands for scientifically robust integrated and participative decision-making. This handbook hopes to improve practices by contributing an international, multidisciplinary, ready-reference source to this debate. Volume I addresses EIA principles, process and methods. Part 1 maps the EIA process and its impact on decision. It positions EIA in the context of sustainable development and relative to other decision tools, including economic valuation. It also positions strategic environmental assessment (SEA) in a similar way. Part 2 addresses the elements of the EIA process and significant impact assessment topics (air, water, ecological, social, risk, landscape and visual) not only in terms of good practice but also methodological evolution. This volume concludes by addressing cumulative impact assessment and SEA methods. Volume II provides a unique consideration for EIA implementation and practice in Europe, Africa, the Far East, South America and North America. It uses a number of project types to provide 'how to do' guidance and addresses practice in policy and plan assessment. This book should be read by legislators, decision-makers, economists, developers, industrial managers and consultants involved in this significant field.

Book Synopsis Mobility Patterns and Urban Structure by : Paulo Pinho
Download or read book Mobility Patterns and Urban Structure written by Paulo Pinho and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite extensive efforts to understand the overall effect of urban structure on the current patterns of urban mobility, we are still far from a consensual perspective on this complex matter. To help build agreement on the factors influencing travel behaviour, this book discusses the influence of alternative urban structures on sustainable mobility. Bringing together two existing and complementary methods to study the relationship between urban structure and mobility, the authors compare two case studies with distinct urban structures and travel behaviour (Copenhagen and Oporto). Of particular concern is the influence of urban structure factors, namely land use and transport system factors, and motivational factors related to the social, economic and cultural characteristics of the individual traveller. The research presented in this book highlights the relevance of centrality in travel behaviour and in more sustainable travel choices. Different operational forms of the centrality concept are revealed as important: it is shown that more sustainable travel can be influenced by several urban structure factors and that no particular combination is required as long as a certain level of centrality is provided. Finally, the book concludes that urban structure can, on the one hand, constrain and, on the other hand, influence travel choice.
