Book excerpt: This book is the result of the American Psychological Association's Division of Psychotherapy (Div. 29) Task Force aimed at applying psychological science to the identification and promulgation of effective psychotherapy. Many efforts to improve therapy have focused on codifying evidence-based treatments, but in doing so have left the psychotherapeutic relationship behind. Clinical experience and research findings underscore that the therapeutic relationship accounts for as much of the outcome as particular treatments. This volume's 25 chapters identify the elements of effective therapy relationships and methods of customizing psychotherapy to each patient.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Premature termination, or dropout, from psychotherapy has been a pervasive problem for many decades. It can especially a problem at the university counseling center, where there is increased demand for a variety of psychotherapy services at campus centers which can be underfunded. At these centers, a dropout represents an opportunity cost with impacts at the client, therapist, and administrative level where it is most prohibitive. While several predictive factors for dropout have been identified from previous research studies, the current study aims to examine potential predictors using a very large (n=23,144 clients in the final presented model), representative data-set gathered through a practice research network, the Center for Collegiate Mental Health (CCMH), for an in-depth analysis of a specific treatment setting. Using multiple logistic regression, previously empirically validated variables are examined along with clinically derived variables specific to the college counseling demographic, and predictive models for dropout models are presented using these variables available at intake.

Book excerpt: This book examines the complicated personal and institutional factors that influence a student's decision to terminate his studies; it investigates ways to enable him to resume his education and utilize his talents. The opening chapters approach the problem from an administrative point of view, reporting on statistical and psychological research and indicating future directions. Subsequent chapters deal with personal dimensions: relations between the student and his college environment; the effects of timing of readmission; family attitudes toward the dropout; the effectiveness of psychiatric treatment; personality traits that contribute to a student’s difficulties. College administrators will find this study relevant to policy decisions on admissions, medical services, and course structuring. Clinicians and researchers will find guidelines for therapy and suggestions for further investigation. Finally, parents of college dropouts will gain new understanding of the problem and the best way to meet it. Originally published in 1966. Book excerpt: Premature termination is a significant yet often neglected problem in psychotherapy with significant consequences for clients and therapists alike. According to some estimates, as many as 20% of adult clients terminate psychotherapy prematurely. Even experienced practitioners using the best evidence-based techniques cannot successfully promote positive, long-term change in clients who do not complete the full course of treatment. This book helps therapists and clinical researchers identify the common factors that lead to premature termination, and it presents eight strategies to address these factors and reduce client dropout rates. Such evidence-based techniques will help therapists establish proper roles and behaviors, work with client preferences, educate clients on patterns of change, and plan for appropriate termination within the first few sessions. Additional strategies can be used throughout therapy to help strengthen and reinforce clients' feelings of hope, enhance their motivation to create change, develop and maintain the therapeutic alliance, and continually evaluate overall treatment progress. Case examples demonstrate how these strategies can be employed in real-life scenarios.

This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motivation is key to substance use behavior change. Counselors can support clients' movement toward positive changes in their substance use by identifying and enhancing motivation that already exists. Motivational approaches are based on the principles of person-centered counseling. Counselors' use of empathy, not authority and power, is key to enhancing clients' motivation to change. Clients are experts in their own recovery from SUDs. Counselors should engage them in collaborative partnerships. Ambivalence about change is normal. Resistance to change is an expression of ambivalence about change, not a client trait or characteristic. Confrontational approaches increase client resistance and discord in the counseling relationship. Motivational approaches explore ambivalence in a nonjudgmental and compassionate way.
