Book excerpt: The long-term creep and shrinkage behaviors of concrete can greatly affect the serviceability and constructability of prestressed concrete structures. To account for these effects, it is necessary to reliably predict the deformations of the concrete through time. These calculations are particularly challenging for precast, prestressed girders, for which fabricators often use accelerated curing regimes (hot-curing) to make the concrete gain strength faster and thus increase girder production rates. With the exception of a recent study at the University of Washington (Magnuson 2016), little data previously exists on the creep and shrinkage behavior of concrete for such a curing regime. Current prediction models of creep and shrinkage have been calibrated using ambient-cured concrete tests and assume a constant stress history. They deal with variable stress histories by applying the principle of superposition. The validity of the application of the principle of superposition to creep strains has been questioned by many, and it is not computationally convenient. The objectives of this research were (1) to collect additional data on the creep and shrinkage of hot-cured concrete, (2) to study the effect of hot-curing concrete further and (3) to validate the functionality of a model proposed by Magnuson. The additional data verified that creep is affected by the hot-curing but it suggested that shrinkage strain are not affected. Several configurations of the model were calibrated, and a reasonable fit was achieved to creep data from concrete with a diverse set of loading histories. A previously suggested and simpler version of the model showed comparable results (but slightly worse), which questions the necessity of the more complex version of the model.

Book excerpt: Most research work on the effect of the thermal expansion of the constituents of concrete has concentrated chiefly on hardened concrete. Its resistance to heating and cooling and to freezing and thawing has been used for purposes of assessment. The works of different investigators have led to considerable contradiction and no definite conclusion can be drawn on the effect of differences between the coefficients of thermal expansion of the constituents of concrete. Findings show effects on the durability under repeated cycles of freezing and thawing and the compressive strength of concrete subjected to temperature change. There is some evidence that the relative expansions of the constituents of fresh concrete cause a reduction of its ultimate strength under conditions of accelerated curing.

Book excerpt: Accelerated curing procedures are being used more and more frequently to obtain an estimate of concrete strength by testing accelerated specimens at ages ranging from 24 hr plus or minus 15 min, 28-1/2 hr plus or minus 15 min, or 48 to 96 hr, depending on whether the warm water, the boiling water, or the autogenous curing procedure standardized in ASTM C 684 is followed. Modifications of these procedures also exist. Good correlations between strength of early accelerated specimens and that of 28-day specimens offer the advantage of evaluating the strength level of the concrete within 1 to 4 days from the time of placement which provides economies in construction by giving early warning of unsatisfactory strength. We believe that in the future design strengths will be specified as accelerated strengths.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition ten years ago, significant developments have occurred in the use of admixtures in concrete. Eight new chapters and a full update of the preceding ten chapters bring this book up to date; reflecting the relative advances made in the science and technology of different groups of admixtures. The increased role and development of admixtures in concrete technology is evidenced by a number of conferences, publications, and novel admixtures available in the market place. These developments in the field caused the modification of many chapters in the first edition in order to reflect the advances. Although individual chapters refer to standards and specifications of admixtures, those only interested in the standards or techniques used in investigating admixtures will find the second chapter (Research Technologies, Standards, and Specifications) useful. Admixtures are not as inert as may be presumed. They may chemically interact with the constituents of concrete and affect the properties of the fresh and hardened concrete and its durability. The third chapter deals with these aspects. It was important to devote a chapter to recent attempts in developing new admixtures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lea's Chemistry of Cement and Concrete deals with the chemical and physical properties of cements and concretes and their relation to the practical problems that arise in manufacture and use. As such it is addressed not only to the chemist and those concerned with the science and technology of silicate materials, but also to those interested in the use of concrete in building and civil engineering construction. Much attention is given to the suitability of materials, to the conditions under which concrete can excel and those where it may deteriorate and to the precautionary or remedial measures that can be adopted. First published in 1935, this is the fourth edition and the first to appear since the death of Sir Frederick Lea, the original author. Over the life of the first three editions, this book has become the authority on its subject. The fourth edition is edited by Professor Peter C. Hewlett, Director of the British Board of Agrement and visiting Industrial Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Dundee. Professor Hewlett has brought together a distinguished body of international contributors to produce an edition which is a worthy successor to the previous editions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water bath methods for accelerating the strength development of portland cement concrete were investigated in a two phase study as follows. Phase I - Participation in a cooperative accelerated strength testing program sponsored by the American Society for Testing and Materials. The three methods studied consisted of; (1) curing immediately after casting in 95°F water for 24 hours, (2) curing in boiling water for 3 1/2 hours, commencing 23 hours after casting, and (3) curing in boiling water for 15 hours commencing after the concrete reached a penetration resistance of 3500 psi (fixed set). Phase II - A study of the effects on the results of the fixed set accelerated curing methods of curing water temperatures from 95°F to 212°F. Also considered were certain heat transfer parameters relevant to strength development. The major conclusions were: Phase I 1. The fixed set boiling method is the most efficient and reliable of those studied. 2. Water bath accelerated curing is more efficient for high than for low strength concretes. 3. Water bath and standard moist curing produce strength results of about equal reproducibility. Phase II 1. Accelerated curing efficiencies are directly proportional to the total relative amounts of heat released by the concretes during accelerated curing. 2. Boiling (212°F) water is not conducive to optimum curing efficiency. 3. Optimum water bath temperatures for accelerated concrete strength development range approximately from 165° to 180°F. The duration of accelerated curing is not critical for the fixed set boiling method.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effect of Curing Condition on the Wear and Strength of Concrete The necessity for careful restriction on the quantity of mixing water used in concrete, and the importance of proper curing conditions during the period of setting and hardening are not generally appreciated by engineers and contractors doing concrete work. In view of the wide spread use oi concrete in the construction of pavements, oors, loading platforms, and in other places requiring high strength and resistance to abrasion, it seemed desirable to carry out an experimental study which would bring out the effect Of water content and curing conditions on the compressive strength and the wearing resistance of concrete, and the relation between these two properties. These tests were made as a part of the experimental studies of the properties of concrete and concrete materials, being carried out through the co - operation of Lewis Institute and the Portland Cement Association at the Structural Materials Research Laboratory, Lewis Institute, Chicago.
