Book excerpt: Student persistence, which is student's progress towards graduation through achieving or meeting educational goals, is widely studied. The focus of a majority of the studies on student persistence is on students at the K-12 and undergraduate levels. Furthermore, while persistence of graduate student population was studied, such studies focused on domestic student, and not international students. International graduate students are important for educational institutions. The pedagogical and financial impact of international graduate students on educational institutions is significant, yet their retention and persistence is understudied. The current study was an attempt to enhance our understanding surrounding student retention and persistence. Research on student retention and persistence is greatly influenced by the works of Vincent Tinto, one of the earliest researchers to incorporate sociological research into their work on student persistence and, who in the early 1970s, developed what is probably the very first predictive model of student persistence. Tinto's (1993) model of student persistence, known as Tinto's Institutional Departure Model (TIDM), suggests that a student's integration into the academic and social fabric of the educational institution (i.e., academic integration and social integration) predicts their persistence. Subsequent research, across different student populations and at different levels of education, has shown that academic integration and social integration play an important role in determining persistence of students, validating the core finding of Tinto's model. Student persistence decisions are complex and are influenced by a variety of factors. For example, finance plays an important role in not only access to education but also influences academic integration and social integration. This was highlighted by the works of Pascarella and Terenzini (2005), and Cabrera and colleagues (Cabrera, Nora, & Castañeda, 1992; Nora, Cabrera, Hagedorn, & Pascarella, 1996) who have shown that while financial aid can help, the effectiveness of the assistantship varies, depending on the type of financial aid awarded to individual students.

The study used a phenomenological interpretive approach, incorporating the narratives of fifteen international graduate students from eleven countries. The researcher guided this study based on Bronfenbrenner's ecological model of human development (1977, 1979, 1994). The findings provided insight into the interactions that international graduate students have with faculty, how these interactions influenced their experiences, and how classroom practices impacted academic experiences for international graduate students.Faculty who acknowledged the unique needs and cultural differences of international graduate students supported students in positive ways, resulting in favorable outcomes. Reaching out to offer assistance, friendship, and guidance provided an important foundation for students' ability to persist. Exhibiting patience and extending time for issues involving the English language in the areas of class participation, reading, and writing were also instrumental in supporting academic progress.When faculty employed cultural references in class that eluded international graduate students or incorporated curriculum that was outside of their lived experiences, students were lost, felt excluded, and were unable to learn or make sense of the material. In these cases, international graduate students struggled, suffered, and in some instances failed.Understanding this engagement process between faculty and international graduate students, and subsequent influences on academic experience and progress, contributes to the literature by calling attention to the impact this engagement may present. Further, detailing the important role faculty and institutions of higher education may impart, as well as consequences for students should the engagement be less than supportive, helps fill gaps in the existing literature regarding interactions between faculty and international graduate students.I also presented conclusions, recommendations for faculty, international graduate students, and institutions of higher education, and suggestions for future research. Acknowledging that the needs of international graduate students are unique and significant will aid faculty toward this end. Orientation programs for faculty providing strategies to work with and support international graduate students is imperative. Further, institutional programs that effectively support international graduate students during their educational adjustment must be a priority in our universities. Enhancing these support programs for faculty and international graduate students is an important consideration and recommendation for universities to heed.

Previous research demonstrates that participation in community service not only assists students in understanding learning outcomes, but also facilitates social and academic integration into the university campus environment. This study illuminates the significant environmental factors of the institution and the various characteristics of students who participated in community service experiences that influenced the students' decision to graduate. The conceptual framework was drawn from Astin's (1983 Input-Environment-Outcome model. The primary data used in this dissertation is from the Multi-Intuitional Study of Leadership at a Doctoral Research institution in the Midwest. The findings provide evidence that students who participated in community service state they intend to graduate from the instiution at slightly higher rates than other students. The main conclusions drawn from this study are participation in community service has positive implications on not only juniors' and seniors' decision to likely graduate, but also first-year students. In addition, community service experiences enhance the faculty and peer interaction, which provides a positive campus environment, a factor also related to a student's intention to graduate. This dissertation recommends that colleges and universities promote the integration of community service experiences into the curriculum to provide a multi-dimensional approach to academic and social integration that encourages the students' likelihood of graduating.

Book excerpt: For the past several decades, factors leading to success in postsecondary education have been a target of investigation by psychologists and psychological and educational researchers. Tinto's integration theory (1975, 1987, 1993) is a dominant sociological perspective in studying college student success, especially student persistence. Academic integration and social integration are the two core concepts in his theoretical framework. According to this framework, the better students academically and socially integrate into college systems, the more likely they experience success in college. The main purpose of this study was to examine the effect of academic integration and social integration on college student success by employing systematic review and meta-analysis techniques. The results indicated that academic integration and social integration have a positive relationship with each other and with college student commitment and success. Compared to academic integration and social integration, commitment has a larger relationship with college student success however. The conceptualization of commitment in the studies is the moderator of effects such that measures of institutional commitment yielded larger effects than did measures of goal commitment. As for the student success behaviors, academic integration and social integration have larger effects on student persistence than student academic performance. In general, Tinto's theory could be applied equally to students in both two year and four year institutions. However, the relationships were stronger in two year than in four year institution, although only statistically significantly so for two of the six tested paths. The patterns of influences were somewhat different between two-year and four-year institutions. The results of this review could help student affairs practitioners to identify which components of Tinto's theory are more important and focus their resources on the target programs. Further, the somewhat different results of two-year and four-year institutions remind student affairs to understand their student populations when they create programs and policies to support student success.

Study results revealed that students' primary initial challenges included (1) housing, (2) weather, (3) financial difficulties, and (4) transportation from the airport, while later challenges centered on (1) financial difficulties (2) loneliness, and (3) transportation services. The study also revealed that English language comprehension affected their integration socially and their overall experience in acclimatization.

The study explored the relationship of academic and social integration, defined by classroom active learning strategies and sense of belonging, with persistence. The study also expanded upon the idea of socio-academic integrative moments which might occur when social and academic integration converge or overlap. Consistent with Tinto's model, factors including initial institutional commitment, initial goal commitment, and subsequent institutional commitment were also analyzed. Multiple regression analysis of data obtained from a 38-question survey ( n =299) revealed one common predictor of persistence among the three research questions: initial commitment to the educational goal. Qualitative data, interpreted from a diverse group of 10 nontraditional students, confirmed the quantitative findings and revealed that, in relation to persistence, initial commitment to the educational goal seemed to transcend all other theoretical factors including institutional commitment, social integration, academic integration, and student entry characteristics such as race, gender, parents' educational attainment, first-generation status, and high school GPA. In addition, focus group findings indicated the presence of socio-academic integrative described as academically-focused social integration. Recommendations for further exploration into the integrational convergence or non-linearity of Tinto's model are included. Recommendations for practice and future research prompt additional exploration into nontraditional student persistence including suggestions to identify factors related to meaningful integration for nontraditional students and how those factors might influence persistence.

Book excerpt: Those from marginalized populations, many of whom are first-generation college students (FGCS), often face barriers to accessing secondary education (Pitre & Pitre, 2009). Additionally, when students from such groups do successfully enroll in post-secondary educational opportunities, their graduation rates remain low (DeAngelo, Franke, Hurtado, Pryor & Tran, 2011; Engle, 2007). At the same time, there appears to be a correlation between positive social and academic assimilation, family support, and college success (Falcon, 2015). One promising intervention aligned with the goal of fostering social integration for FGCS and the focus of this research, is a living-learning community (LLC). LLCs are college living communities in which students have access to faculty and professional staff as well as opportunities to bond with their peers. The purpose of this study was to identify the role LLCs had on one group of FGCS’ transition to their next academic year in relation to feeling socially and academically integrated on their campus and to help professionals in higher education understand how critical it is for first-generation college students to find a sense of belonging on their campus. This study’s qualitative results illuminated how the LLC model provided a bridge between students’ academic and non-academic lives, addressing specific learning focus and enhancing their university experience. It also provided the students with a space for intentional support on how they can better integrate in their college.

The role of student affairs professionals and staff includes developing and integrating all students, including international graduate students, on-campus (Di Maria, 2012; Braskamp, 2011; Kuh, 2009; Wilcox, et al., 2005). However, many student affairs professionals and staff feel unprepared to serve or work with international graduate students (Brandenburg, 2016; Cierra, 2004; Di Maria, 2012; Yakaboski & Perozzi, 2018). There has been little empirical research conducted on student affairs professionals and staff members’ perspectives about their role in integrating international graduate students on their campuses. The purpose of this instrumental case study was to understand the perspectives of student affairs professionals and staff about their role in integrating international graduate students into campus and the policies, services, programs, and other elements they consider most helpful in integrating these students. This study was conducted at a four-year public higher education institution in the Midwestern United States that has committed to internationalization. The study design included data gathered from multiple in-depth semi-structured interviews, site observations, and documents shared by student affairs professionals and staff members. Inductive thematic analysis was used to examine the perspectives of each participant. It consisted of identifying, analyzing, organizing, describing, and reporting themes found within a data set. The data analysis revealed that student affairs professionals and staff play five roles in integrating international graduate students: educators, adapters, liaisons, career shapers, and barrier breakers. Within their roles of serving international graduate students, student affairs professionals and staff face challenges, such as limited on-campus resources for international graduate students, limited understanding of university policies, limited intercultural training, and limited intercultural exposure. To respond to the needs and challenges of international grad students, student affairs professionals and staff adapt the existing programs and support services initially designed for undergraduate domestic students, while some of the needs and challenges of these students are different. My findings recommend that institutions create support structures that allow student affairs professionals and staff to work with these students and learn more about their needs and challenges related to integrating into their campus.
