Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on currently available data, a unified model for the particle size distribution, particle density, and geometrical dispersion for the alumina particles in the exhaust of a Titan SRM plume in the stratosphere is presented. The particle size distribution is found to be trimodal with Sauter mean diameters of 0.056, 1.0, and 3.6 um for the small, medium, and large size modes, respectively. Nearly all the particles lie within the small size mode, but nearly all the mass lies in the large size mode. About two-thirds of the particle surface area available for heterogeneous chemical reactions is due to the large particle mode while most of the remaining surface area is due to the small particle mode. The light scattering characteristics of the plume were also explored. Mie scattering calculations were used to predict the local attenuation of the plume as a function of wavelength and the total attenuation of a beam of radiation through the plume making an arbitrary angle with respect to the axis of the plume and as a function of time after SRM passage for several wavelengths in ultraviolet, visible, and infrared spectral regions. These studies show that most of the attenuation is due to the large-size mode. An expression for the volume density of total area of the particles is derived in terms of known parameters and the Sauter mean diameter. Mie theory is then used to show that this Sauter mean diameter can be measured using a two-color transmissometer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particulates in the solid rocket exhaust plume cause rocket base heating, motor performance losses, and determine the plume spectral properties. The particle properties that contribute to these effects are the particle size distribution function (PSDF), emissivity, density, and surface tension. Of the four, the PSDF and emissivity are not very well known. Until an adequate model is developed for the PSDF and emissivity, in situ measurements will have to be made. This report reviews the motivation behind the design and development of an in situ optical probe, and discusses the development of the theory needed to make the measurements of the optical properties. It also develops an estimate of the sampling time required to make the measurements statistically meaningful. Consideration is given to the effects that the optical properties play in the scattering of light by the particles and scanning angles, and incident polarizations were chosen that would minimize these effects. PSDF is discussed, with recognition given to the degree of difficulty in applying analytic methods. Various optimization methods are discussed, especially Genetic Algorithms (GA). The report closes on the note that the PSDF was discernible by transforming it into the equivalent integrated mass distribution (IMD), and recommendations are given as to further improvements in the GA approach.

Book excerpt: Predictions of the plume radiance and radiant intensity in the infrared were made for the plumes produced by Athena H second and third stages. Predictions of both the radiance due to emission from the alumina particles produced by these solid propellant engines were calculated. For both stages it was found that the emission from the alumina particles completely dominated the gaseous emission. (Author).

Book excerpt: Aluminum oxide(Al2O3) particles of known size distribution were cast into a solid propellant which burned at temperatures less than the melting point of Al2O3. Thus, particles of known size distribution existed at the nozzle inlet and in the plume. Malvern particle sizing instruments were used to make measurements at these two location using a windowed subscale motor and the results were compared to the known distribution. In the motor, measurements were limited due to disruptive flow from the window purge gas. However, the unaffected larger modes were properly measured. In the plume, the measurements of the modes were quite accurate, but low signal strength resulted in some inaccuracies for the mass contained in each mode. A phase Doppler particle analyzer was adapted to an existing plume probe. Initial measurements at two radial locations were in good agreement with the expected size distribution.

Book excerpt: The exhaust -plumes generated by rocket motors are of significant military importance for missile detection, recognition and communication due to their electromagnetic emission and propagation properties. The plume is a high temperature, high velocity stream of gas and particles, into which the surrounding air is entrained. With improvements in the modelling of plume gas chemistry and turbulence, particles present in the plume have become more important in the computational prediction of the plume's flow field, and the subsequent prediction of plume emission and propagation characteristics. This thesis describes research on plume particles, including the measurement of their physical characteristics and the addition of two phase coding (ie. particles) into current plume prediction software. Particle collections were carried out in plumes produced by rocket motors with double base and composite propellants (including aluminised). The collected particles were analysed to establish their chemical composition and size distribution. A laser Doppler anemometer system was successfully used to measure particle velocities in the plumes of 1.5kN double base motors. Particle tracking software was used to trace the paths of particles using a simplified prediction of the plume and it was found that the predicted particle behaviour was analogous to that measured experimentally. Project management software was used during the research and its relevance was assessed in respect to the project's size and nature. The management of experimental trials was studied and a methodology formulated to help improve their future operation. The costs and benefits of the research were assessed and compared to other research projects. Many of the benefits gained, such as measurement techniques, require marketing to ensure that they are exploited in the future. Recommendations for future research are given that should enhance the present work.
