Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 28 (thesis year 1 983) a total of 10,661 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 197 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 28 reports theses submitted in-1983, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

SUTAPA and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: L'AERATION ET LA SEPARATION DES BOUES ACTIVEES CONSTITUENT LES DEUX ETAPES CLE POUR LE BON FONCTIONNEMENT D'UNE STATION D'EPURATION. L'OBJECTIF DE CE TRAVAIL EST DOUBLE: CARACTERISER LES PARAMETRES SUSCEPTIBLES D'INFLUENCER LE PROCESSUS DE TRANSFERT D'OXYGENE DANS LE MILIEU DE BOUES ACTIVEES, ET ETUDIER L'APTIDUDE A DECANTER DE CELLES-CI EN RELATION AVEC LA BIOFLOCULATION MISE EN JEU. L'ETUDE DU TRANSFERT D'OXYGENE MONTRE QUE LE FACTEUR ALPHA DEPEND DU DEGRE D'EPURATION DE LA POLLUTION INTRODUITE: CE FACTEUR AUGMENTE LORSQUE LA DCO ET DONC LE OUR DANS LE MILIEU DE CULTURE DIMINUENT. MAIS LE FACTEUR PREPONDERANT EST LA CONCENTRATION EN BIOMASSE DANS LE BASSIN D'AERATION: PLUS CETTE CONCENTRATION AUGMENTE, PLUS LA VISCOSITE DU MILIEU EST IMPORTANTE ET PLUS LE FACTEUR ALPHA DIMINUE. L'ETUDE DES FLOCS DE BOUES ACTIVEES MONTRE QU'ILS PRESENTENT UNE STRUCTURE TRES COMPLEXE DANS LAQUELLE LES MICRO-ORGANISMES SONT PIEGES PAR UNE MATRICE DE POLYMERES EXOCELLULAIRES. CEUX-CI, DONT LES EXOPOLYSACCHARIDES, JOUENT UN ROLE IMPORTANT DANS L'AGGLOMERATION DES MICRO-ORGANISMES. LES EXPERIENCES MONTRENT QUE LES FLOCS BIOLOGIQUES PLACES DANS DES CONDITIONS DE FAMINE AEROBIE, DEFLOCULENT EN RELARGANT DES EXOPOLYMERES DANS LE MILIEU INTERSTITIEL. CES CONDITIONS DE FAMINE PERMETTENT, EN OUTRE, DE SUPPRIMER LES GERMES FILAMENTEUX, RESPONSABLES D'UNE MAUVAISE DECANTATION

Book excerpt: L'OBJECTIF DU TRAVAIL PRESENTE ETAIT D'ETUDIER, D'INTERPRETER ET DE MODELISER L'INFLUENCE SUR LE TRANSFERT D'OXYGENE DE DIFFERENTS FACTEURS DE CONCEPTION ET DE CONDITIONS DE FONCTIONNEMENT DES STATIONS D'EPURATION A BOUES ACTIVEES. DANS UNE PREMIERE PARTIE, A PARTIR DE 88 MESURES DE REOXYGENATION D'EAU CLAIRE REALISEES SUR 31 STATIONS ET A L'AIDE DE L'ANALYSE DIMENSIONNELLE, DEUX RELATIONS PERMETTANT DE PREDIRE LE TRANSFERT D'OXYGENE ONT ETE DEVELOPPEES EN FONCTION DES PARAMETRES DU SYSTEME (DEBIT D'AIR, DENSITE DE DIFFUSEURS, HAUTEUR D'EAU, AVEC OU SANS VITESSE HORIZONTALE DU LIQUIDE). UNE APPROCHE COMPLEMENTAIRE, THEORIQUE ET EXPERIMENTALE, A ENSUITE PERMIS D'OPTIMISER L'INTERPRETATION DES RESULTATS OBTENUS PAR CES RELATIONS, EN DEFINISSANT UN NOMBRE DE TRANSFERT ADIMENSIONNEL (N T). N T PERMET DE RENDRE COMPTE DE L'EFFET SUR LE TRANSFERT D'OXYGENE DES MOUVEMENTS DE CIRCULATION LIQUIDE, INDUITS NOTAMMENT PAR LA DISPOSITION DES DIFFUSEURS. LE DEUXIEME OBJECTIF A ETE DE PROGRESSER DANS LA COMPREHENSION DES PHENOMENES DU TRANSFERT D'OXYGENE EN CONDITIONS REELLES DE FONCTIONNEMENT DES STATIONS D'EPURATION, PAR L'ACQUISITION ET L'INTERPRETATION DE DONNEES SUR PILOTES ET SUR SITES, EN EAU ADDITIONNEE DE TENSIOACTIFS (ANIONIQUE ET NON IONIQUE). ENFIN, EN PRESENCE DE BOUES ACTIVEES, LES COEFFICIENTS DE TRANSFERT D'OXYGENE DETERMINES PAR LA METHODE DES BILANS GAZEUX, PAR DEUX METHODES NON STATIONNAIRES (REOXYGENATION ET DESORPTION AU PEROXYDE D'HYDROGENE) ET PAR LA MESURE DE RESPIRATION DES BOUES IN SITU ONT ETE COMPARES. UNE ANALYSE CRITIQUE SUR LES LIMITES ET LES CONDITIONS D'APPLICATION DE CHAQUE METHODE PRESENTEE A ETE EFFECTUEE.

Book excerpt: LE TRAVAIL PRESENTE AVAIT POUR OBJECTIFS DE MESURER ET D'INTERPRETER LES PHENOMENES DE TRANSFERT D'OXYGENE EN BOUES ACTIVEES PAR INSUFFLATION D'AIR. LA MESURE DES PERFORMANCES D'OXYGENATION DES SYSTEMES D'AERATION SELON LA TECHNIQUE DES BILANS GAZEUX A ETE VALIDEE EN EAU CLAIRE SUR PILOTE. ELLE FOURNIT DES RENDEMENTS D'OXYGENATION REPRODUCTIBLES ET VOISINS DE CEUX OBTENUS PAR LA METHODE DE REFERENCE (REOXYGENATION D'EAU CLAIRE). LA TECHNIQUE A ENSUITE ETE APPLIQUEE SUR LE CHENAL D'AERATION DE MILLY LA FORET (1400 M#3) ET UNE METHODOLOGIE PRATIQUE A ETE ELABOREE. LES MESURES REALISEES EN BOUES ONT MONTRE QU'EN PRESENCE D'UNE VITESSE HORIZONTALE DE 0.33 M.S#-#1, UNE AUGMENTATION DU DEBIT D'AIR DE 45 A 110 M#3.H#-#1 PAR M#2 DE MEMBRANE INDUISAIT UNE DIMINUTION DU RENDEMENT D'OXYGENATION PROCHE DE CELLE OBSERVEE EN EAU CLAIRE. CONSECUTIVEMENT, LA VALEUR DU FACTEUR ALPHA, DE L'ORDRE DE 0.60, EST INDEPENDANTE DU DEBIT D'AIR. L'EFFET POSITIF DE LA MISE EN ROTATION D'EAU CLAIRE SUR LE TRANSFERT D'OXYGENE A ETE CONFIRME EN PRESENCE DE BOUES ACTIVEES. L'AUGMENTATION DU TRANSFERT EN BOUES AVEC LA VITESSE EST CEPENDANT MOINDRE QU'EN EAU CLAIRE. LE FACTEUR ALPHA EST DONC PLUS ELEVE SANS AGITATION (0.75-0.78) QU'EN PRESENCE D'UNE VITESSE HORIZONTALE (0.60-0.65). LES MESURES COMPLEMENTAIRES REALISEES EN EAU CLAIRE SUR PILOTE N'ONT PAS CONFIRME L'HYPOTHESE EMISE D'UNE REDUCTION DE LA TAILLE DES BULLES PAR CISAILLEMENT LORS DE LA MISE EN ROTATION DE L'EAU ; UNE AUGMENTATION DU DIAMETRE DES BULLES A AU CONTRAIRE ETE NOTEE. L'ADDITION DE TENSIOACTIFS (1 MG.L#-#1) N'A PAS PERMIS DE REPRODUIRE LA DIMINUTION DU FACTEUR ALPHA OBSERVEE LORS DE LA MISE EN ROTATION DES BOUES SUR SITE REEL. LES TENSIOACTIFS ANIONIQUES ETUDIES SEMBLENT REDUIRE LA TAILLE DES BULLES D'AIR, QUI EST IDENTIQUE AVEC ET SANS AGITATION, INDUISANT UNE AUGMENTATION DU FACTEUR ALPHA. LE TENSIOACTIF NON IONIQUE TESTE EST SANS EFFET SUR LA TAILLE DES BULLES, D'OU UNE CONSTANCE DU FACTEUR ALPHA AVEC LA MISE EN ROTATION DE L'EAU.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that literally billions of residents in urban and peri-urban areas of Africa, Asia, and Latin America are served by onsite sanitation systems (e.g. various types of latrines and septic tanks). Until recently, the management of faecal sludge from these onsite systems has been grossly neglected, partially as a result of them being considered temporary solutions until sewer-based systems could be implemented. However, the perception of onsite or decentralized sanitation technologies for urban areas is gradually changing, and is increasingly being considered as long-term, sustainable options in urban areas, especially in low- and middle-income countries that lack sewer infrastructures. This is the first book dedicated to faecal sludge management. It compiles the current state of knowledge of the rapidly evolving field of faecal sludge management, and presents an integrated approach that includes technology, management, and planning based on Sandecs 20 years of experience in the field. Faecal Sludge Management: Systems Approach for Implementation and Operation addresses the organization of the entire faecal sludge management service chain, from the collection and transport of sludge, and the current state of knowledge of treatment options, to the final end use or disposal of treated sludge. The book also presents important factors to consider when evaluating and upscaling new treatment technology options. The book is designed for undergraduate and graduate students, and engineers and practitioners in the field who have some basic knowledge of environmental and/or wastewater engineering.

Book excerpt: This is a practical handbook providing a step-by-step approach to the techniques used for characterizing wastewater sources and investigating sites where collection, treatment and reuse/disposal technologies will be installed. It is intended to help enable local implementation of on-site and decentralized wastewater management system (DWMS)for wide scale use in development settings. How to Design Wastewater Systems for Local Conditions in Developing Countries helps local service providers and regulatory officials make informed decisions through the use of tools, checklists and case studies. It includes a link to a web based community of on-site and decentralized wastewater professionals, which contains related tools and case studies. This handbook serves as a reference for training classes, certification programs, and higher education programs in civil and sanitary engineering. There is an increasing interest on the part of local government officials and private sector service providers to implement wastewater treatment systems to solve sanitation problems. The model presented in this handbook promotes activities that first generate data related to source and site conditions that represent critical inputs, and then applies this information to the technology selection process. Matching the most appropriate technologies to the specific needs of the wastewater project is the key that leads to long term sustainability. How to Design Wastewater Systems for Local Conditions in Developing Countries is an invaluable resource for public sector decision makers and private sector service providers in developing countries. It is also a useful text for students at engineering colleges in developing countries interested in taking a class that teaches the methods of decentralized wastewater management system (DWMS) development.
