Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our built environment exists in a perpetual state of becoming, caught in a process of creation that is continuous and unending. If we wish to understand architecture today, we must engage with the state of flux that defines it. In 2015, Inflection Volume 02 considers the idea of projection, interrogating its meaning in architecture and the built environment. Bringing together the work of students, academics and practitioners from Australia and around the world, this issue addresses the trajectories of the architectural design process, the changing role of architects in society, and the continuing state of becoming that defines our cities. Includes contributions by Studio Gang, dNA Architecture, Pérez-Gomèz and Studio Sioli, Fender Katsalidis Architects, and others... Inflection is a student-run design journal based at the Melbourne School of Design, Melbourne University. Born from a desire to stimulate debate and generate ideas, it advocates the discursive voice of students, academics and practitioners. Founded in 2013, Inflection is a home for provocative writing – a place to share ideas and engage with contemporary discourse. Inflection is fundamentally a printed journal. The physicality of the object: its weight, texture and smell all contribute to the experience of the reader. Inflection asserts that criticality is possible in any mode of expression – written or drawn, prose or poetry. Inflection is themed and encourages a plurality of opinions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Inflection? On a prosaic level, Inflection is the new student-run journal of architecture and the built environment from the Melbourne School of Design and published by AADR – Art Architecture Design Research. Inflection is a themed journal, to be published annually and features work from students, academics and practitioners. Crucially, Inflection is also a physical object – an artefact to be touched, handled and read in depth. At a time when our engagement with architectural ideas is increasingly digital and transient, Inflection offers a different, slower form of discourse and in doing so, hopes to facilitate and engage in conversations about the built environment both locally and internationally. In this issue, the word 'inflection' serves as our point of departure. The authors featured here enter into conversations on edge conditions, ambiguous boundaries and the role and nature of transitions. Individually, the pieces collected here stand as insightful variations on a theme. Taken together, they form something much richer: a constellation of ideas to be parsed, discussed, compared and expanded upon. INFLECTION is a space to gather and share ideas. INFLECTION is a home for provocative thought. INFLECTION asserts the value of the printed word. INFLECTION values the discursive voice of students, academics and professionals. Like all journals, all change starts somewhere. INFLECTION starts here: we leave the change to you. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first university-level textbook on the power, condition, and expanse of contemporary fine art drawing A Companion to Contemporary Drawing explores how 20th and 21st century artists have used drawing to understand and comment on the world. Presenting contributions by both theorists and practitioners, this unique textbook considers the place, space, and history of drawing and explores shifts in attitudes towards its practice over the years. Twenty-seven essays discuss how drawing emerges from the mind of the artist to question and reflect upon what they see, feel, and experience. This book discusses key themes in contemporary drawing practice, addresses the working conditions and context of artists, and considers a wide range of personal, social, and political considerations that influence artistic choices. Topics include the politics of eroticism in South American drawing, anti-capitalist drawing from Eastern Europe, drawing and conceptual art, feminist drawing, and exhibitions that have put drawing practices at the centre of contemporary art. This textbook: Demonstrates ways contemporary issues and concerns are addressed through drawing Reveals how drawing is used to make powerful social and political statements Situates works by contemporary practitioners within the context of their historical moment Explores how contemporary art practices utilize drawing as both process and finished artifact Shows how concepts of observation, representation, and audience have changed dramatically in the digital era Establishes drawing as a mode of thought Part of the acclaimed Wiley Blackwell Companions to Art History series, A Companion to Contemporary Drawing is a valuable text for students of fine art, art history, and curating, and for practitioners working within contemporary fine art practice.

Book excerpt: This is a highly accessible, comprehensive introduction to item response theory (IRT) models and their use in various aspects of assessment/testing. The book employs a mixture of graphics and simulated data sets to ease the reader into the material and covers the basics required to obtain a solid grounding in IRT. Written in an easily accessible way that assumes little mathematical knowledge, Carlson presents detailed descriptions of several commonly used IRT models, including those for items scored on a two-point (dichotomous) scale such as correct/incorrect, and those scored on multiple-point (polytomous) scales, such as degrees of correctness. One chapter describes a model in-depth and is followed by a chapter of instructions and illustrations showing how to apply the models to the reader’s own work. This book is an essential text for instructors and higher level undergraduate and postgraduate students of statistics, psychometrics, and measurement theory across the behavioral and social sciences, as well as testing professionals.

It equally allows precise measurements of other physical and technical quantities, whenever they can be measured in terms of frequency. This volume covers the central methods and techniques relevant for frequency standards developed in physics, electronics, quantum electronics, and statistics. After a review of the basic principles, the book looks at the realisation of commonly used components. It then continues with the description and characterisation of important frequency standards from atomic clocks, to frequency stabilised lasers. The whole is rounded of with a discussion of topical applications in engineering, telecommunications, and metrology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relativistic string theory was born in 1960s. The stimulus was an observation that the dual model of hadronic interactions proposed by Veneziano is adequate not to the quantum theory of usual (null-dimensional) particles but to the theory of one-dimensional relativistic objects -- the strings. It has been immediately found that a self-consistent quantum theory of (bosonic) relativistic strings can be constructed in frames of standard quantisation scheme only in a space-time of dimension 26. Inclusion of fermions has decreased this critical dimension to 10. However, it is evident from the experiment, that elementary particles and their constituents 'live' in the space-time of dimension 4. The attempt to show that extra 6 dimensions are compactified on the scale of Planck's length, in the spirit of old ideas by Kaluza-Klein, just created further complications. This book differs from traditional presentations of the classical and quantum theory of relativistic strings by two aspects. First, it proposes and consistently implements an idea of mathematical modelling and computer visualisation of topologically non-trivial solutions of the classical equations of motion of relativistic strings. Second, on this basis it successfully implements a quantisation scheme, originating from the papers by G P Pron'ko, which uses a different set of dynamical variables, canonically equivalent to the variables of standard scheme, in frames of Hamiltonian formalism and Dirac's quantisation procedure.

Book excerpt: Books published during recent years in the field of applied geo physics can be, in general, divided into two main types. The first type covers such multiaspect books as "Introduction to Geophysics", while the second-special works on fundamental theoretical prob lems with an elaborate mathematical description. The books of the first type are mainly intended for beginner students and specialists in adjacent fields. The books of the second type may be useful for teachers and theorists. However, there are also books of another (third) type. These books describe the experience in geophysical in vestigation under specific conditions or propose solutions to concrete geological problems, being a methodological guide for geophysicists and concentrating ideas both for advanced students and researchers. Authors hope to give the readers a book of this kind. Interpretation of geophysical fields is a complex consistent pro cess. Its successful realization requires: (a) knowledge of geological regularities and geological situation; (b) availability of petrophysical support; (c) mathematical methods of solving direct and inverse problems of geophysics (i.e. computation of geophysical fields from a known source and determination of source characteristics from known fields); (d) application of statistical and logico-informational procedures to the analysis and synthesis of observation results for revealing desired objects and peculiarities of the geological structure.
