Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book includes 17 chapters covering different fields of inflammation that can be classified into acute or chronic in response to trauma, infection, and exposure to other noninfectious agents, including allergens and xenobiotics. Inflammation is a self-healing process, upon the clearance of the foreign particle and helps to protect the host. However, when it is not resolved and becomes chronic, it may lead to cancer and autoimmune diseases. This book includes different topics of autoimmune diseases, cancer, and other sterile inflammatory conditions originating in the absence of allergens as well as autoimmune disease and generates inflammatory immune response. Hence, the book will prove beneficial to researchers and scientists involved in inflammation research.

It also describes the active, specialized pathways that bring the resolution of inflammation. Further, the book examines the key molecular and cellular events that are involved in the resolution of inflammation processes involved in tissue repair and regain of physiological function. Importantly, it sheds light on the cellular and molecular processes through which conventional inflammatory cytokines control mammalian tissue repair and regeneration. It also explores the perturbation of processes that are involved in the resolution of inflammation with aging and reviews clinical trials of anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory therapies. Towards the end, the book discusses the role of inflammation in the development and progression of cancer. This book is an invaluable resource for scientists, academicians, and research scholars interested in the latest cutting-edge knowledge in the field of immunology, inflammation, inflammation resolution, and inflammatory diseases.

Book excerpt: Throughout the centuries, inflammation has been considered as a disease in itself. This misconception arose from the inability to distinguish between inflammatory changes and the insults which induce them. The understanding of the distinction between the genesis of inflammation and the tissue reactions that follow is attributed to JOHN HUNTER, who, at the end of the 18th century, substantially contributed to the analysis of inflammation in objective terms. Today, however, we are still trying to find explanations for Celsus' Signs in terms of structural and functional changes occurring in the inflamed tissue. There are drugs which modulate these signs but, without a detailed knowledge of the basic physiopathological events, it is impossible to understand their mechanism of action. Notwithstanding, the effects of anti inflammatory drugs provided new knowledge of the relevance of the signs and symptoms to the sequence of biochemical and morphological changes occurring in inflammation. When we accepted the invitation to edit a Handbook on Inflammation and Anti Inflammatory Drugs, we were aware of the magnitude of the task. We knew the impossibility of covering the whole field in detail, especially taking into account the rapid accumulation of experimental knowledge which would, in all likelihood, overtake the process of publication.

Book excerpt: This book provides readers with the most up-to-date information on cutting-edge research concerning chronic inflammation. We now know that when inflammation becomes chronic, it acts as a strong disease-promoting factor in a variety of disorders including arteriosclerosis, obesity, cancer, and Alzheimer disease. Chronic inflammation is hence called as the “silent killer”; it upsets the body’s homeostatic mechanism insidiously. In spite of these developments, we know very little about the mechanism underlying chronic inflammation. Particularly, we do not know precisely what induces chronic inflammation or what promotes its prolongation in a spatiotemporal framework. Neither do we have clear knowledge about how chronic inflammation destroys various tissues or how it predisposes individuals to many different diseases. To make the situation worse, we have no effective treatment against chronic inflammation. Since 2010, two major research programs (CREST and PRESTO) aimed at clarifying the mechanisms underlying chronic inflammation were launched in Japan, and investigators of different research areas with a brilliant track record were selected by their research proposals. Subsequently they have made their best efforts to answer the conundrum concerning chronic inflammation. This book is a compendium of such research efforts. In each chapter, the CREST- or PRESTO-funded researchers summarize their original work concerning mechanisms of induction, progression, or resolution underlying chronic inflammation. The most emphasized characteristic is the molecular aspect of chronic inflammation. The book thus presents the most recent progress made in the molecular understanding of chronic inflammation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diabetes is a complex disease and is also one of the most common. It is very difficult to reach an accurate estimate for the global prevalence of diabetes since the standards and methods of data collection vary widely in different parts of the world. In addition, many potential sufferers are not included in the count because according to an estimate about 50% of cases remain undiagnosed for up to 10 years. However, according to an estimate for 2010, globally, there are about 285 million people (amounting to 6.4% of the adult population) suffering from this disease. This number is estimated to increase to 439 million by 2030 if no cure is found. The general increase in life expectancy, leading to an ageing population, and the global rise in obesity are two main reasons for the increase. With the basic platform set, Editor presents his views and advice to the readers, especially to diabetic patients suffering from T2DM, on the basis of his observations and information collected from other diabetics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive guide offers a state-of-the-art overview of basic and clinical aspects of atopic dermatitis (AD). The name "atopic dermatitis" was first used in 1933, and Drs. Lewis Webb Hill and Marion B. Sulzberger presented their report "Evolution of atopic dermatitis" in 1935. Their observations accurately forecasted the contemporary issues in the management of the condition, such as the conclusions that should be drawn from our understanding of the pathogenesis of AD, and the use of steroids as the main treatment. Several aggravating factors have recently been identified, and these also need to be addressed. In this context, the expert contributors to this book describe and discuss the evolution of atopic dermatology from Sulzberger’s era to the present day, including clinical manifestations, etiopathology and treatment. In addition, it explores skin care intervention, the role of microbiom and GWAS studies, and presents unique, previously unpublished cohort studies. It provides insights into the dynamic changes in AD since Sulzberger introduced topical steroids for its treatment. It is a valuable resource for dermatologists, medical practitioners and researchers who are interested in atopic dermatology.

Book excerpt: The author of the bestselling The Immune System Recovery Plan shares her science-based, drug-free treatment plan for the almost fifty million people who suffer from arthritis: an amazing 3-step guide to eliminate the disease naturally. Arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the world—greater than both back pain and heart disease. One example, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), is the most common autoimmune disease, affecting 1% of the US population, and almost 68 million people worldwide. Conventional medicine tends to treat arthritis with strong, gut-damaging, immune-suppressing pain medications, temporarily relieving the symptoms of the disease without addressing its root causes. Now, in her groundbreaking new book, Dr. Susan Blum, a leading expert in functional medicine, offers a better approach to healing arthritis permanently. Dr. Blum’s groundbreaking three-step protocol is designed to address the underlying causes of the condition and heal the body permanently by: -Treating Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, and more -Healing your gut to heal your joints -Reducing inflammation without medication Dr. Blum’s innovative two-week plan to quickly reduce pain through anti-inflammatory foods and supplements; followed by an intensive gut repair to rid the body of bad bacteria and strengthen the gastrointestinal system for a dramatic improvement in arthritis symptoms and inflammation; and then addresses the emotional issues that contribute to inflammation, and eating a simple, Mediterranean inspired diet to maintain a healthy gut. Featuring detailed case studies, including Dr. Blum’s own inspiring personal story, Healing Arthritis offers a revolutionary way to heal your gut, repair your immune system, control inflammation, and live a happier, healthier life…arthritis-free.
