Two introductory essays by contemporary-art historians survey the themes treated by the artists and offer insights into the different traditions and contemporary-art scenes in the region. The book contains 200 colour illustrations, including a colorplate section complemented by commentaries that place the individual works in the context of each artist's oeuvre. Book excerpt: Set sail with Island Book: The Infinite Land, the second volume in an Evan Dahm's epic fantasy graphic novel trilogy rich with allegory and underlying themes. After their quest to find the Monster, Sola and her friends have gone down separate paths. Sola spends her days on the open seas while Hunder stays close to home as the chief of the unified Sun and Fortress Islands. And Wick? Well . . . it’s almost as if he’s become a ghost. Then their world is thrown into chaos when Alef, the captain of one of Hunder’s ships, brings news of a massive island—a continent—that he says the Sun and Fortress islanders are destined to claim for their own. Alef and Hunder launch an expedition that threatens to bring death and destruction to any who stand in their way. Sola must make a choice—step aside and allow other islanders to die, or risk her own life in order to stop her friend.

Book excerpt: Focusing on the Anglophone Caribbean, The Making of a Caribbean Avant-Garde describes the rise and gradual consolidation of the visual arts avant-garde, which came to local and international attention in the 1990s. The book is centered on the critical and aesthetic strategies employed by this avant-garde to repudiate the previous generation’s commitment to modernism and anti-colonialism. In three sections, it highlights the many converging factors, which have pushed this avant-garde to the forefront of the region’s contemporary scene, and places it all in the context of growing dissatisfaction with the post-colonial state and its cultural policies. This generational transition has manifested itself not only in a departure from “traditional” in favor of “new” media (i.e., installation, performance, and video rather than painting and sculpture), but also in the advancement of a “postnationalist postmodernism,” which reaches for diasporic and cosmopolitan frames of reference. Section one outlines the features of a preceding “Creole modernism” and explains the different guises of postnationalism in the region’s contemporary art. In section two, its [PKM1] momentum is connected to the proliferation of independent art spaces and transnational networks, which connect artists across and beyond the region and open up possibilities unavailable to earlier generations. Section three demonstrates the impact of this conceptual and organizational evolution on the selection and exhibition of Caribbean art in the metropole. [PKM1]AU: clarify “its.” The contemporary art scene?

Book excerpt: Recipient of a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Award Recipient of a Bologna Ragazzi Non-Fiction Special Mention Honor Award A Kirkus Reviews Best Middle Grade Book of 2019 From celebrated author and illustrator Ashley Bryan comes a deeply moving picture book memoir about serving in the segregated army during World War II, and how love and the pursuit of art sustained him. In May of 1942, at the age of eighteen, Ashley Bryan was drafted to fight in World War II. For the next three years, he would face the horrors of war as a black soldier in a segregated army. He endured the terrible lies white officers told about the black soldiers to isolate them from anyone who showed kindness—including each other. He received worse treatment than even Nazi POWs. He was assigned the grimmest, most horrific tasks, like burying fallen soldiers…but was told to remove the black soldiers first because the media didn’t want them in their newsreels. And he waited and wanted so desperately to go home, watching every white soldier get safe passage back to the United States before black soldiers were even a thought. For the next forty years, Ashley would keep his time in the war a secret. But now, he tells his story. The story of the kind people who supported him. The story of the bright moments that guided him through the dark. And the story of his passion for art that would save him time and time again. Filled with never-before-seen artwork and handwritten letters and diary entries, this illuminating and moving memoir by Newbery Honor–winning illustrator Ashley Bryan is both a lesson in history and a testament to hope.

Book excerpt: A LOCUS AWARD FINALIST FOR BEST FIRST NOVEL! The Guardian's Pick for Best Science Fiction Book of the Year! A timely and uncanny portrait of a world in the wake of fake news, diminished privacy, and a total shutdown of the Internet BEFORE: In Bristol’s center lies the Croft, a digital no-man’s-land cut off from the surveillance, Big Data dependence, and corporate-sponsored, globally hegemonic aspirations that have overrun the rest of the world. Ten years in, it’s become a center of creative counterculture. But it’s fraying at the edges, radicalizing from inside. How will it fare when its chief architect, Rushdi Mannan, takes off to meet his boyfriend in New York City—now the apotheosis of the new techno-utopian global metropolis? AFTER: An act of anonymous cyberterrorism has permanently switched off the Internet. Global trade, travel, and communication have collapsed. The luxuries that characterized modern life are scarce. In the Croft, Mary—who has visions of people presumed dead—is sought out by grieving families seeking connections to lost ones. But does Mary have a gift or is she just hustling to stay alive? Like Grids, who runs the Croft’s black market like personal turf. Or like Tyrone, who hoards music (culled from cassettes, the only medium to survive the crash) and tattered sneakers like treasure. The world of Infinite Detail is a small step shy of our own: utterly dependent on technology, constantly brokering autonomy and privacy for comfort and convenience. With Infinite Detail, Tim Maughan makes the hitherto-unimaginable come true: the End of the Internet, the End of the World as We Know It.

This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various approaches have been developed to evaluate the consequences of spatial structure on evolution in subdivided populations. This book is both a review and new synthesis of several of these approaches, based on the theory of spatial genetic structure. François Rousset examines Sewall Wright's methods of analysis based on F-statistics, effective size, and diffusion approximation; coalescent arguments; William Hamilton's inclusive fitness theory; and approaches rooted in game theory and adaptive dynamics. Setting these in a framework that reveals their common features, he demonstrates how efficient tools developed within one approach can be applied to the others. Rousset not only revisits classical models but also presents new analyses of more recent topics, such as effective size in metapopulations. The book, most of which does not require fluency in advanced mathematics, includes a self-contained exposition of less easily accessible results. It is intended for advanced graduate students and researchers in evolutionary ecology and population genetics, and will also interest applied mathematicians working in probability theory as well as statisticians.

Book excerpt: "Did you know people could fly? Well, have you ever tried?" On an enchanted tropical island Michael glimpses something unbelievable and embarks on the adventure of his life. Because Michael sees things others don't, he's different - but so are the Infinite. Since ancient times the Infinite secretly guided humanity from the shadows. These days it's from an island sanctuary, through a modern global network. But they still teach their kids everything a human being is capable of - like the socially awkward Ben, who was raised in the rainforest to do the impossible. An infinite power is inside us all. If only Michael can see that what makes him different makes him special, that what some call a weakness is your strength! But even paradise is not perfect. Earth's guardian angels have dark secrets too. When a series of terrible attacks push the world to the brink of war, Michael and his newfound friends must confront the demons that haunt the Infinite's past. For the very soul of the Infinite is at stake and with it the future of the whole world. Can Michael hang on to his new home? Or has trying to change the world already changed the Infinite too much? Full of hilarious characters and intriguingly set in today's world, Infinite: Island of the Immortals brings together modern fantasy, science and the silliness of growing up in this refreshingly human adventure of epic proportions.
