Book excerpt: The proposed test is motivated by studies of GeneChip data to identify differentially expressed genes through the analysis of probe level measurements. Realizing that the number of replicates is usually small in GeneChip studies, we propose a genome-wide adjustment to the test statistic to account for within-array correlation and several enhanced quantile approaches by borrowing information across genes. Our empirical studies of GeneChip data show that inference on the quartiles of the gene expression distribution is a valuable complement to the usual mixed model analysis based on Gaussian likelihood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantile regression constitutes an ensemble of statistical techniques intended to estimate and draw inferences about conditional quantile functions. Median regression, as introduced in the 18th century by Boscovich and Laplace, is a special case. In contrast to conventional mean regression that minimizes sums of squared residuals, median regression minimizes sums of absolute residuals; quantile regression simply replaces symmetric absolute loss by asymmetric linear loss. Since its introduction in the 1970's by Koenker and Bassett, quantile regression has been gradually extended to a wide variety of data analytic settings including time series, survival analysis, and longitudinal data. By focusing attention on local slices of the conditional distribution of response variables it is capable of providing a more complete, more nuanced view of heterogeneous covariate effects. Applications of quantile regression can now be found throughout the sciences, including astrophysics, chemistry, ecology, economics, finance, genomics, medicine, and meteorology. Software for quantile regression is now widely available in all the major statistical computing environments. The objective of this volume is to provide a comprehensive review of recent developments of quantile regression methodology illustrating its applicability in a wide range of scientific settings. The intended audience of the volume is researchers and graduate students across a diverse set of disciplines.

Book excerpt: This brief addresses the estimation of quantile regression models from a practical perspective, which will support researchers who need to use conditional quantile regression to measure economic relationships among a set of variables. It will also benefit students using the methodology for the first time, and practitioners at private or public organizations who are interested in modeling different fragments of the conditional distribution of a given variable. The book pursues a practical approach with reference to energy markets, helping readers learn the main features of the technique more quickly. Emphasis is placed on the implementation details and the correct interpretation of the quantile regression coefficients rather than on the technicalities of the method, unlike the approach used in the majority of the literature. All applications are illustrated with R.

Book excerpt: QUANTILE REGRESSION A thorough presentation of Quantile Regression designed to help readers obtain richer information from data analyses The conditional least-square or mean-regression (MR) analysis is the quantitative research method used to model and analyze the relationships between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables, where each equation estimation of a regression can give only a single regression function or fitted values variable. As an advanced mean regression analysis, each estimation equation of the mean-regression can be used directly to estimate the conditional quantile regression (QR), which can quickly present the statistical results of a set nine QR(τ)s for τ(tau)s from 0.1 up to 0.9 to predict detail distribution of the response or criterion variable. QR is an important analytical tool in many disciplines such as statistics, econometrics, ecology, healthcare, and engineering. Quantile Regression: Applications on Experimental and Cross Section Data Using EViews provides examples of statistical results of various QR analyses based on experimental and cross section data of a variety of regression models. The author covers the applications of one-way, two-way, and n-way ANOVA quantile regressions, QRs with multi numerical predictors, heterogeneous QRs, and latent variables QRs, amongst others. Throughout the text, readers learn how to develop the best possible quantile regressions and how to conduct more advanced analysis using methods such as the quantile process, the Wald test, the redundant variables test, residual analysis, the stability test, and the omitted variables test. This rigorous volume: Describes how QR can provide a more detailed picture of the relationships between independent variables and the quantiles of the criterion variable, by using the least-square regression Presents the applications of the test for any quantile of any numerical response or criterion variable Explores relationship of QR with heterogeneity: how an independent variable affects a dependent variable Offers expert guidance on forecasting and how to draw the best conclusions from the results obtained Provides a step-by-step estimation method and guide to enable readers to conduct QR analysis using their own data sets Includes a detailed comparison of conditional QR and conditional mean regression Quantile Regression: Applications on Experimental and Cross Section Data Using EViews is a highly useful resource for students and lecturers in statistics, data analysis, econometrics, engineering, ecology, and healthcare, particularly those specializing in regression and quantitative data analysis.

Book excerpt: Quantile Regression, the first book of Hao and Naiman′s two-book series, establishes the seldom recognized link between inequality studies and quantile regression models. Though separate methodological literature exists for each subject, the authors seek to explore the natural connections between this increasingly sought-after tool and research topics in the social sciences. Quantile regression as a method does not rely on assumptions as restrictive as those for the classical linear regression; though more traditional models such as least squares linear regression are more widely utilized, Hao and Naiman show, in their application of quantile regression to empirical research, how this model yields a more complete understanding of inequality. Inequality is a perennial concern in the social sciences, and recently there has been much research in health inequality as well. Major software packages have also gradually implemented quantile regression. Quantile Regression will be of interest not only to the traditional social science market but other markets such as the health and public health related disciplines. Key Features: Establishes a natural link between quantile regression and inequality studies in the social sciences Contains clearly defined terms, simplified empirical equations, illustrative graphs, empirical tables and graphs from examples Includes computational codes using statistical software popular among social scientists Oriented to empirical research

Book excerpt: Quantile regression analysis differs from more conventional regression models in its emphasis on distributions. Whereas standard regression procedures show how the expected value of the dependent variable responds to a change in an explanatory variable, quantile regressions imply predicted changes for the entire distribution of the dependent variable. Despite its advantages, quantile regression is still not commonly used in the analysis of spatial data. The objective of this book is to make quantile regression procedures more accessible for researchers working with spatial data sets. The emphasis is on interpretation of quantile regression results. A series of examples using both simulated and actual data sets shows how readily seemingly complex quantile regression results can be interpreted with sets of well-constructed graphs. Both parametric and nonparametric versions of spatial models are considered in detail.

Book excerpt: Quantile regression is an increasingly important empirical tool in economics and other sciences for analyzing the impact of a set of regressors on the conditional distribution of an outcome. Extremal quantile regression, or quantile regression applied to the tails, is of interest in many economic and financial applications, such as conditional value-at-risk, production efficiency, and adjustment bands in (S, s) models. In this paper we provide feasible inference tools for extremal conditional quantile models that rely upon extreme value approximations to the distribution of self-normalized quantile regression statistics. The methods are simple to implement and can be of independent interest even in the non-regression case. We illustrate the results with two empirical examples analyzing extreme fluctuations of a stock return and extremely low percentiles of live infants' birth weights in the range between 250 and 1500 grams.

Book excerpt: This paper develops cluster robust inference methods for panel quantile regression (QR) models with individual fixed effects, allowing arbitrary temporal correlation structure within each individual. The conventional QR standard errors assuming independent outcomes can seriously underestimate the uncertainty of estimators and therefore overestimate the significance of effects when outcomes are serially correlated. This is analogous to the well-known size distortion in the OLS estimation of panel data, illustrated by Bertrand, Duflo, and Mullainathan (2004). Thus, we propose a clustered covariance matrix estimator that solves this problem in panel QR models. In addition, we develop two cluster robust tests and establish their asymptotic properties. Unlike OLS, there is no known data transformation in quantile models that effectively remove individual fixed effects, so we use recent advancements in panel QR literature to deal with the incidental parameters problem. Simulation studies show that cluster robust tests have good finite sample properties. We demonstrate the usefulness the new methods using an empirical capital structure example. The results document evidence of strong heterogeneity of the economic drivers across the conditional distribution of market debt ratio.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estimating conditional quantiles of financial time series is essential for risk management and many other applications in finance. It is well-known that financial time series display conditional heteroscedasticity. Among the large number of conditional heteroscedastic models, the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic (GARCH) process is the most popular and influential one. So far, feasible quantile regression methods for this task have been confined to a variant of the GARCH model, the linear GARCH model, owing to its tractable conditional quantile structure. This paper considers the widely used GARCH model. An easy-to-implement hybrid conditional quantile estimation procedure is developed based on a simple albeit nontrivial transformation. Asymptotic properties of the proposed estimator and statistics are derived, which facilitate corresponding inferences. To approximate the asymptotic distribution of the quantile regression estimator, we introduce a mixed bootstrapping procedure, where a time-consuming optimization is replaced by a sample averaging. Moreover, diagnostic tools based on the residual quantile autocorrelation function are constructed to check the adequacy of the fitted conditional quantiles. Simulation experiments are carried out to assess the finite-sample performance of the proposed approach. The favorable performance of the conditional quantile estimator and the usefulness of the inference tools are further illustrated by an empirical application.
