Book excerpt: In the last few decades, the study of the spectrum of density fluctuations in fluids at the transition from the continuous to the single particle regimes has attracted an increasing interest. Although the shape of the spectrum is well known in these two extreme limits, no theory firmly predicts its evolution in the broad crossover region. However, the development of inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) has substantially expanded the potentialities of modern spectroscopy, thus, providing an unprecedented detailed mapping of such a crossover. A better understanding of the line-shape evolution in this intermediate regime is deemed to improve our knowledge of all dynamical processes occurring in a fluid from macroscopic to microscopic scales. The aim of this chapter is to review some relevant experimental contributions brought about by IXS in this field since its development toward the end of past millennium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-ray scattering techniques are a family of nondestructive analytical techniques. Using these techniques, scientists obtain information about the crystal structure and chemical and physical properties of materials. Nowadays, different techniques are based on observing the scattered intensity of an X-ray beam hitting a sample as a function of incident and scattered angle, polarization, and wavelength. This book is intended to give overviews of the relevant X-ray scattering techniques, particularly about inelastic X-ray scattering, elastic scattering, grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering, small-angle X-ray scattering, and high-resolution X-ray diffraction, and, finally, applications of X-ray spectroscopy to study different biological systems.

Book excerpt: Since its development toward the end of the past millennium, high-resolution Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (IXS) has substantially improved our knowledge of the collective dynamics of liquids at mesoscopic scales, that is, over distances and time-lapses approaching those typical of first neighboring atoms' interactions. However, despite the undoubted scientific relevance and the rapid evolution toward maturity, comprehensive monographs on this technique are not available. The primary purpose of this book is to partially fill this lack while providing a helpful reference for both mature scientists and less experienced researchers in the field. After a general introduction to the fundamental aspects of scattering measurements, the IXS cross-section is analytically derived, and the complementarity with Inelastic Neutron Scattering is discussed in detail. The remainder of the book reviews representative IXS studies on simple fluids focusing on topics as relevant as the dynamic crossover from the hydrodynamic to the kinetic regime, the onset of relaxation phenomena and related high-frequency viscoelasticity, the gradual emergence of quantum effects, the evidence of dynamic boundaries partitioning the supercritical domain, the prevalence of solid-like aspects in the high-frequency dynamics of fluids, and the dynamic fingerprints of the polymorphic nature of liquid aggregates.

Book excerpt: The explicit form of the inelastic X-ray scattering, IXS, cross-section is derived within a time-dependent perturbative treatment of the scattering process. In this derivation, the double differential cross-section is obtained from the Fermi Golden Rule within a plane wave expansion of the vector potential. Furthermore, it is assumed throughout that the Thompson term of the perturbative Hamiltonian yields the overwhelming contribution to the scattering. The achievement of an explicit form for the double differential scattering cross-section rests on the validity of the adiabatic or Born-Oppenheimer approximation. As a result, it is here shown that that the IXS double differential cross-section is proportional to the spectrum of density fluctuations of the sample, which is thus the sample variable directly accessed by IXS measurements. Although the whole treatment is valid for monatomic systems only, under suitable approximations, it can be extended to molecular systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use of inelastic x-ray scattering to study excitations in condensed matter systems is discussed with emphasis on complementarity with inelastic neutron scattering. In particular, studies of electronic excitations in simple metals are detailed. A long standing controversy on the role of crystalline long range order on electron dynamics at intermediate momentum transfers is resolved by comparison of response functions obtained in liquid an solid phase of Li, Na, and Al. They show that the overall shape of the response function is unchanged on melting, implying that it is not determined by the long range order of the ion cores. Conversely, orientationally independent fine structure disappears on melting and therefore must be attributed to band structure-induced transitions, not many-body effects as had previously been argued. At small q, the plasmon lifetime and dispersion remain unchanged on melting. Other experiments are also briefly reviewed.

The aim of this text is to explain basic principles and applications of x-ray scattering in a simple way using many practical examples followed by more elaborate case studies. It contains a separate chapter on the different types of order/disorder in soft matter that play such an important role in modern self-assembling systems. Finally the last chapter treats soft matter surfaces and thin film that are increasingly used in coatings and in many technological applications, such as liquid crystal displays and nanostructured block copolymer films

Book excerpt: Inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS), complementary to other more established inelastic scattering probes, such as light scattering, electron scattering, and neutron scattering, is becoming an important experimental technique in the study of elementary excitations in condensed matters. Over the past decade, IXS with total energy resolution of few meV has been achieved, and is being used routinely in the study of phonon dispersions in solids and liquids as well as dynamics in disordered and biological systems. In the study of electronic excitations, IXS with total energy resolution on the order of 100 meV to 1 eV is gaining wider applications also. For example, IXS has been used to study collective excitations of valence electrons, single electron excitations of valence electrons, as well as core electron excitations. In comparison with the alternative scattering techniques mentioned above, IXS has several advantages. First, IXS probes the full momentum transfer range of the dielectric response of the sample, whereas light scattering is limited to very small momentum transfers, and electron scattering suffers the effects of multiple scattering at large momentum transfers. Second, since IXS measures the bulk properties of the sample it is not surface sensitive, therefore it does not require special preparation of the sample. The greater flexibility in sample conditions and environments makes IXS an ideal probe in the study of liquids and samples under extreme temperature, pressure, and magnetic field. Third, the tunability of synchrotron radiation sources enables IXS to exploit element specificity and resonant enhancement of scattering cross sections. Fourth, IXS is unique in the study of dynamics of liquids and amorphous solids because it can probe the particular region of energy-momentum transfer phase space, which is inaccessible to inelastic neutron scattering. On the other hand, the main disadvantages of IXS are the small cross sections and the strong absorption of x-rays in high Z elements.

Book excerpt: Hardly any other discovery of the nineteenth century did have such an impact on science and technology as Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen’s seminal find of the X-rays. X-ray tubes soon made their way as excellent instruments for numerous applications in medicine, biology, materials science and testing, chemistry and public security. Developing new radiation sources with higher brilliance and much extended spectral range resulted in stunning developments like the electron synchrotron and electron storage ring and the freeelectron laser. This handbook highlights these developments in fifty chapters. The reader is given not only an inside view of exciting science areas but also of design concepts for the most advanced light sources. The theory of synchrotron radiation and of the freeelectron laser, design examples and the technology basis are presented. The handbook presents advanced concepts like seeding and harmonic generation, the booming field of Terahertz radiation sources and upcoming brilliant light sources driven by laser-plasma accelerators. The applications of the most advanced light sources and the advent of nanobeams and fully coherent x-rays allow experiments from which scientists in the past could not even dream. Examples are the diffraction with nanometer resolution, imaging with a full 3D reconstruction of the object from a diffraction pattern, measuring the disorder in liquids with high spatial and temporal resolution. The 20th century was dedicated to the development and improvement of synchrotron light sources with an ever ongoing increase of brilliance. With ultrahigh brilliance sources, the 21st century will be the century of x-ray lasers and their applications. Thus, we are already close to the dream of condensed matter and biophysics: imaging single (macro)molecules and measuring their dynamics on the femtosecond timescale to produce movies with atomic resolution.

Book excerpt: Transition metal oxides are presently the focus of much attention in condensed matter physics because of the diverse phenomena exhibited by these materials. Examples include antiferromagnetism, superconductivity and colossal magnetoresistance. The origin of these phenomena lies in the strong electron correlations present in these materials which place them between the well understood limits of band insulators and simple metals. The presence of these correlations makes these materials hard to handle theoretically, and there is a need for more detailed experimental work, in particular in regard to the electronic structure and excitations.
