Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of particles and photons with solid surfaces is interdisci plinary in character, so that very recent developments in solid-state phys ics, surface physics and atomic physics stimulate progress in the field or profit from results of the "ion-solid" community. Technical interest in the field ranges from catalysis and semiconductor manufacturing to fusion re search, for instance by surface analytical techniques, or interest in phenom ena such as sputtering and radiation damage. The Third International Workshop on Inelastic Ion-Surface Coll isions, held at Feldkirchen-Westerham under the auspices of Max-Planck-Institut fUr Plasmaphysik, Garching, Fed. Rep. of Germany, brought together 63 scientists from 12 countries for three days of very involved discussions. As at the pre vious workshops at Bell Laboratories in 1976 and McMaster University in 1978, the experiment of gathering experts from seemingly different disciplines was very successful in promoting the basic physical ideas. The proceedings contain the 14 major reviews and a smaller number of con tributions presented at the workshop. All papers have been reviewed with little delay, and the reviewer's efforts are gratefully acknowledged. The first group of papers is concerned with theoretical and experimental aspects of secondary electron emission due to ion impact, including the potential emission caused by slow metastables. This is followed by reviews of exper iments and recent theoretical developments of electron- and photon-induced desorption.

Book excerpt: Inelastic Ion-Surface Collisions is a collection of papers presented at the 1976 International Workshop on Inelastic-Ion-Surface Collisions, held at Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, New Jersey. This book contains 12 chapters and begins with the identification and study of the underlying physical mechanisms associated with ionization, neutralization, and excitation responsible for the observed sputtering and particle backscattering outershell inelastic collision phenomena. Other chapters discuss the role of the bulk, the surface, and the near surface interaction regions on the degree of ionization, neutralization, and excitation. The remaining chapters deal with the oscillations in the energy dependence of backscattered ions, wake riding states, and optical polarization effects from beam transmission through tilted foils and from beam particle bombardment of surfaces at grazing incidence. This book is of great value to atomic, solid state, nuclear, surface, chemical, and space physicists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last two decades the experimental investigation of atomic coherence phenomena has made rapid progress. Detailed studies have been performed of angular correlations, spin polarization effects, angular momen tum transfer, and the alignment parameters which characterize the charge cloud of excited atoms. The enormous growth in the number of these investigations was made possible through substantial development and application of new experimental technology, the development of sophisti cated theoretical models and numerical methods, and a fine interplay between theory and experiment. This interplay has resulted in a deeper understanding of the physical mechanisms of atomic collision processes. It is the purpose of the chapters in this book to provide introductions for nonspecialists to the various fields of this area as well as to present new experimental and theoretical results and ideas. The interest in spin-dependent interactions in electron-atom scattering has a long history; it dates back to the early investigations of Mott in 1929. While the more traditional measurements in this field were concerned with the determination of spin polarization and asymmetries, the range of investi gations has been expanded enormously during the last few years and now includes many observables sensitive to one or more of the various spin dependent interactions. The understanding of these effects requires a theoretical description of the orientation and alignment parameters of the target atoms, of the forma tion of resonances, of the influence of electron-exchange processes, and of the relativistic interactions inside the atom and between projectile and target.

Book excerpt: Providing a clear description of the theory of polydisperse multiphase flows, with emphasis on the mesoscale modelling approach and its relationship with microscale and macroscale models, this all-inclusive introduction is ideal whether you are working in industry or academia. Theory is linked to practice through discussions of key real-world cases (particle/droplet/bubble coalescence, break-up, nucleation, advection and diffusion and physical- and phase-space), providing valuable experience in simulating systems that can be applied to your own applications. Practical cases of QMOM, DQMOM, CQMOM, EQMOM and ECQMOM are also discussed and compared, as are realizable finite-volume methods. This provides the tools you need to use quadrature-based moment methods, choose from the many available options, and design high-order numerical methods that guarantee realizable moment sets. In addition to the numerous practical examples, MATLAB® scripts for several algorithms are also provided, so you can apply the methods described to practical problems straight away.

Book excerpt: Electron emission is a fundamental phenomenon which accompanies most interactions of energetic particles with solid surfaces. Not only is it a special effect which for almost ninety years has attracted the interest of physicists, but it is also of acute importance in such fields as radiation effects and transport phenomena in solids (e.g., radiation biology), plasma-surface interactions, microtechnology, surface analysis, ion microscopies, particle detector development and others. While Volume I emphasizes the theoretical description of the mechanisms of electron emission, this volume reviews modern experimental trends and aspects of the phenomenon, e.g., kinetic electron emission from massive solids and from thin foils under bombardment with positive, negative, and neutral particles, and the measurement of electron statistics in connection with potential and kinetic emission due to slow singly and multiply charged projectiles.

Book excerpt: Present day heterogeneous catalysis is rapidly being transformed from a technical art into a science-based technology. A major contribution to this important change is the advance of surface spectroscopic techniques able to characterize the complex surfaces of the heterogeneous catalytic system. The Advanced Study Institute (on which the current proceedings is based) has as its primary aim the bringing together of a variety of lecturers, outstanding in those fields of experience, to enable a broad coverage of different relevant approaches. Not only catalyst characterization but also catalytic reactivity had to be covered in order to relate catalyst properties with catalyst performance. Since modern catalysis relates catalytic performance to microscopic molecular catalyst features, theoretical electronic aspects also had to be included. The Advanced Study Institute had a unique feature in that it brought together physicists, catalytic chemists and chemical engineers whom rarely directly interact. From physics especially new experimental possibilities of beams were emphasized. At present it is possible to obtain very detailed information on model catalysts, whilst the applications to practical catalysts are gaining rapidly in sophistication. Apart from the plenary lectures, the Institute included "hot topics" to highlight special developments and offered participants the opportunity to present contributed papers (either orally or as a poster). These contributions formed an integral part of the summer school and significantly enhanced the interaction between participants. Inclusion of the hot topics and contributed papers in these proceedings give them an added topical value.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physics and chemistry of surfaces is becoming more and more important as an exciting field of basic research as well as in devices and technology. The diagnoses and the conditioning of surfaces and studies of molecular interac tions with surfaces have made large advancements by using laser techniques. With its divisional meeting 1983 the Quantum Electronics Division of the European Physical Society tried to set up a forum where the latest ideas and achievements could be presented and discussed. The wide range of topics (gen eral surface spectroscopy, surface-enhanced optical processes, laser surface spectroscopy, laser-induced processes at surfaces) was deliberately chosen to provide an opportunity for specialists from one field to get acquainted with the techniques and results from others. This meeting took place in Mauterndorf, Austria, from March 9th to March 11th, 1983. Mauterndorf is a small village in the Austrian Alps, situated in a well-known skiing area. The conference was held in a medieval castle adapt ed as a conference center. These stimulating surroundings guaranteed a vivid exchange of ideas among the 98 participants from 17 nations. Among the numerous people engaged in the organization, our special thanks go to Mrs. I. Mandl and Mrs. B. Seeberg for doing a superb job in implementing the meeting arrangements and efficiently prompting the authors to deliver their manuscripts for this volume in time.
