Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Twenty Fourth Jerusalem Symposium reflected the high standards of these distinguished scientific meetings, which convene once a year at the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Jerusalem to discuss a specific topic in the broad area of quantum chemistry and biochemistry. The topic at this year's Jerusalem Symposium was mode selective chemistry, which constitutes a truly interdisciplinary subject of central interest in the areas of chemical physics, photochemistry and photobiology. The main theme of the Symposium was built around the exploration of the possibility and conditions for non-statistical reaction dynamics in molecules, van der Waals molecules, clusters and condensed phases. The main issues addressed photoselective and coherent excitation modes, bottlenecks for intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution, the consequences of the internal structure of many-atom systems and of rotational vibrational level structure for intramolecular dynamics, bond selective photodissociation, ultrafast chemical clocks for energy disposal, coherent control of photochemical reactions and nonstatistical unimolecular reaction dynamics. The interdisciplinary nature of this research area was deliberated by intensive and extensive interactions between theory and experiment. This volume provides a record of the invited lectures at the Symposium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains most of the invited and contributed papers presented at the second international conference devoted to the general topic "Vibrations at Surfaces" and which took place from 10 to 12 September 1980 at the Facu1tes Notre-Dame de 1a Paix in Namur, Belgium. The conference was organized to review the large amount of information gathered in this field over the late seventies as a result of th~ rapid improvements and dissemination of surface spectroscopic technique such a electron energy loss, infrared and Raman surface spectroscopies. Much time was devoted to Raman spectroscopy of adsorbed mo1e 'cu1es. After several years of vivid debate over the causes of the observed large enhancement of Raman cross section, a clearer pic ture emerges from the papers presented here: the actual value of the enhancement factor does depend in a complicated manner on long range surface roughness, atomic-scale roughness and the dielectric properties of the substrate as well as on the electronic structure of the molecule in its adsorbed state. Less controversial are the results obtained with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and several sessions of the con ference were devoted to the approach. As witnessed by the growing number of laboratories using the technique, EELS is now a mature spectroscopic tool for the characterization and analysis of the chemisorption bond.
Book Synopsis Interaction of Gases with Surfaces by : Alexander V. Bogdanov
Download or read book Interaction of Gases with Surfaces written by Alexander V. Bogdanov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-09-11 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interface phenomena are most fascinating because of the mixing of different scales and the interference of diverse physical processes. This makes it necessary to use different levels of description: microscopic, kinetic, and gas-dynamical. A unified quasiclassical approach is used to answer practical questions dealing with inelastic gas-surface scattering, the kinetics of adsorption layers, the evolution of inhomogeneities and defects at the surface, the Knudsen layer, the development of boundary conditions on the kinetic and gas-dynamical levels, the determination of exchange and slip coefficients, and so on.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades surface science has experienced a large growth in connection with the development of various experimental techniques which are able to characterize solid surfaces through the observation of the scattering of ions, electrons, photons or atoms. These methods of investigation, known under different labels such as LEED, AES, XPS, UPS, etc. have been extensively applied in describing the structure, morphology, and chemical and physical properties of crystal surfaces and interfaces of a large variety of materials of interest in solid-state physics, electronics, metallurgy, biophysics, and heterogeneous catalysis. Among these methods we wish to emphasize molecular beam scattering from solid surfaces. ~lolecular beam scattering has gone through a large development in the last ten years. In this decade a large number of laboratories have used this method to study various clean and adsorbate-covered surfaces. The technique is nonetheless quite old. It dates back to the beginning of the thirties, when Estermann and Stern performed the first atom diffraction experiment proving the wave nature of atoms. In the following years the entire subject of gas-surface interaction was considered a branch of rarefied gas dynamics and developed in connection with aerospace research. Attention was then given to the integral properties of gas-solid interactions (sticking and energy accomodation, mean momentum transfer) rather than to atom-surface scatter ing from well-characterized surfaces.
Book Synopsis Trends in Applied Theoretical Chemistry by : L.A. Montero
Download or read book Trends in Applied Theoretical Chemistry written by L.A. Montero and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume gathers a series of selected and updated contributions presented at the International Symposium on Applied Theoretical Chemistry held in Havana, Cuba, July 2-6, 1990. This Symposium was intended to illustrate current applications of Theoretical Chemistry in different fields of Physical Chemistry. Theoretical Chemistry has become a powerful tool of investigation in all areas of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physical Chemistry. The plenary lectures given in the Symposium were classified into four topics: Atom-Surface Interactions, Chemical Reaction Mechanisms, Molecular Structure and Properties, and Molecular Spectroscopy. We retain the same division in this volume. Over 60 scientists from Cuba, Finland, France, Germany, Great-Britain, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Sweden, USA, USSR, and Venezuela participated in the Conference. Twenty plenary lectures were given by distinguished members of the international scientific community. Furthermore, a large number of posters were presented by younger experts in various fields of Theoretical Chemistry. This International Symposium was organized by the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Havana and the Cuban Chemical Society. It was an opportunity to bring together in Havana several outstanding scientists from various countries of the world. Havana is worldwide renown for its wonderful climate, the hospitality of its inhabitants, and the proximity of beautiful touring resorts.
Book Synopsis Heterogeneous Reaction Dynamics by : S. Bernasek
Download or read book Heterogeneous Reaction Dynamics written by S. Bernasek and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1995-10-12 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an in-depth monograph covering the topic of energy transfer and reactions on solid surfaces. This topic is of great interest now because of its applications to catalysis and solid-state electronics, including the manufacture of semiconductors, integrated circuits and other solid state devices. Initially it describes what is meant by heterogenous reaction dynamics. Basically, this is the study, on a molecular level, of the elementary dynamics of energy transfer and reactions at surface. The emphasis of the book will be on well characterized solid surfaces. Energy transfer and reactions are broadly defined to include phase transitions in adsorbed layers, diffusion, the absorption process itself, and energy transfer between adsorbate and subtrate, as well as gas-surface energy transfer, catalytic and oxidative type surface reactions.
