Book excerpt: Electron Scattering from Complex Nuclei, Part B is a three-chapter text that explores the excitation of the nucleus to bound levels and the nucleus breakup through particle emission from continuum states. The first chapter discusses the inelastic scattering to nuclear levels, the giant resonances, the concepts of radiative corrections, and the phase shift analysis for inelastic scattering. The subsequent chapter concerns the quasi-elastic continuum and the observations of the nuclear decay products. The last chapter presents special topics on electron scattering, such as dispersion and exchange corrections, sum rules, and isospin effects. Physicists, researchers, and graduate students will find this book invaluable.

Book excerpt: Electron energy loss spectroscopy (ELS) is a vast subject with a long and honorable history. The problem of stopping power for high energy particles interested the earliest pioneers of quantum mechanics such as Bohr and Bethe, who laid the theoretical foun dations of the subject. The experimental origins might perhaps be traced to the original Franck-Hertz experiment. The modern field includes topics as diverse as low energy reflection electron energy loss studies of surface vibrational modes, the spectroscopy of gases and the modern theory of plasmon excitation in crystals. For the study of ELS in electron microscopy, several historically distinct areas of physics are relevant, including the theory of the Debye Waller factor for virtual inelastic scattering, the use of complex optical potentials, lattice dynamics for crystalline specimens and the theory of atomic ionisation for isolated atoms. However the field of electron energy loss spectroscopy contains few useful texts which can be recommended for students. With the recent appearance of Raether's and Egerton's hooks (see text for references), we have for the first time both a comprehensive review text-due to Raether-and a lucid introductory text which emphasizes experimental aspects-due to Egerton. Raether's text tends to emphasize the recent work on surface plasmons, while the strength of Egerton's book is its treatment of inner shell excitations for microanalysis, based on the use of atomic wavefunctions for crystal electrons.

EXCITATION OF INDIVIDUAL-PARTICLE STATES OF NUCLEI BY INELASTIC ELECTRON SCATTERING, by Raymond S. Willey. July 62, 63p. illus. 44 refs. (Technical note, no. 66) (Contract AF 49(638)388, Proj. 9750-37500) (AFOSR TN-3066) Unclassified report DESCRIPTORS: *Particles, *Excitation, *Nuclei, *Electrons, *Inelastic scattering, Nuclear structure, Electromagnetic fields, Quantum me chanics, Nuclear spins, Quadrupole moments, Vector analysis, Partial differential equations, Integration, Operators (Mathematics), Matrix algebra, Numerical analysis, Lithium, Oxygen. Formulas are given for the computation of cross sections for excitation of shell model states in light nuclei by inelastically scattered electrons. The contributions from the transverse electricAND MAGNETIC INTERACTIONS ARE CALCULATED IN DETAIL. The determination of radiative lifetimes by extrapolation of electron scattering data is discussed and found to be model-dependent. Particular calculations are carried out for Li7 and O18. The Li7 calculation provides an example in which the contributions from the transverse interactions are of the same order of magnitude as the contribution from the Coulomb interaction, even at small momentum transfer. In the case of O18, electron scattering experiments may distinguish collective excited states from individualparticle excited states. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the "International Conference on Spin Excitations in Nuclei" held in Telluride, Colo rado, March 25-27, 1982. The motivation for the conference was, in a large part due to the recent development of new variable energy accelerators which produce high quality beams of electrons, protons, and pions that are providing the first precise information on spin excitations in nuclei over a large range of spin and mass. In the past such data had been restricted primarily to light nuclei and were generally resolution limited. Perhaps, the most exciting new result has been the clear observation of the elusive spin-dipole strength (Gamow Teller and Ml) in medium and heavy mass nuclei through the use of the (p,n) and (p,p') reactions at or near zero degrees with 100-200 MeV incident protons. Energy dependence in the isovector parts of the nucleon-nucleon interaction make the 100-200 MeV energy region particularly appropriate for such studies. The clean data from (e,e'), ('IT,'IT'), (p,p'), and (p,n) on high spin "stretched" states which have particularly simple structure has also been quite impor tant. The recent results contain important new information on the nature of the spin dependent forces in nuclei. These in turn are inherently related to the properties of the nuclear mesonic field and the underlying quantum chromodynamics.

Book excerpt: A study is made of nuclear energy states in B10, B11, and N14 by means of inelastic electron scattering at 180 deg. Radiation widths were derived for the excited states and the results are compared with the single particle model predictions. For the magnetic dipole transitions in B10 and B11 a comparison is made of the experimental data with recently calculated M1 transition strengths in p-shell nuclei by Cohen and Kurath. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron Scattering from Complex Nuclei, Part A covers the historical phases of experimental development in elastic and inelastic electron scattering. This five-chapter text presents the logical development of the underlying theory of electron scattering. After briefly discussing the history of electron scattering from nuclei, this book goes on describing the theory of elastic scattering from a point nucleus, both with Born approximation and the accurate solution of the Dirac equation, as well as the corresponding experiments. The following chapter considers the analysis of nuclear charge distributions experiments using Born cross section and phase-shift methods. A chapter is devoted to the complete elastic and inelastic Born theory. This chapter also deals with the derivation of a theorem on the general form of the electron-nucleus scattering cross section, with an emphasis on the influence of the neglected transverse interaction on the cross section. The last chapter presents the status of elastic scattering along with some topics in muonic atoms that also determine nuclear charge densities. This book will be of great benefit to physicists, researchers, and graduate students who are interested in nuclear structure problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-resolution inelastic electron scattering has been performed on 14°Ce. A search for high-spin, stretched-configuration transitions lead to the identification of a J1r = 12- state at 6.31 MeV. This transition has only 8% of the calculated single-particle strength. The absence of strong high-spin transverse excitations is interpreted as evidence for fragmentation of the single-particle strength. Transition charge densities for six low-lying states have also been extracted. These have been compared with available theoretical calculations; only the qualitative features of the experimentally reconstructed densities are reproduced.

Book excerpt: Nucleon-Nucleon (NN) interaction derived from nuclear realistic potential, is used to study elastic and inelastic electron scattering form factors in light nuclei, where a microscopic theory is employed to include the effects of high configuration outside the 1p-shell model space, which is called core-polarization (cp) effects. Higher energy excitations from 1s-shell core orbits and also from the valence 1p-shell to higher allowed orbits up to 1d5/2 2s1/2 1d3/2 are considered for core-polarization calculations. the outlined theory of elastic and inelastic electron scattering were presented in chapter two. Chapter three of this book devoted to the derivation of the core-polarization effects with higher configuration in the first order perturbation theory and the two-body matrix elements of three part of the realistic interaction: central, spin orbit and strong tensor force, where the two-body matrix elements calculation in harmonic oscillator single-particle basis using Moshinisky transformation. Results, discussions and conclusion are presented in chapter four.
