Book excerpt: All available experimental data on the inelastic scattering of high energy electrons from C-12, O-16, and Ca-40 have been analyzed in terms of the particle-hole models of nuclear excitations. The calculations do not involve any free parameters. The results proved quite sensitive to the treatment of nuclear correlations and generally favored the Random Phase Approximation, which yielded satisfoctory agreement with most of the data. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matrix elements for the excitation of particle-hole states in Ca40 by inelastic electron scattering are calculated. Electric dipole transitions to T = 1 states are considered, taking into account both transverse and Coulomb contributions. The particle-hole matrix elements are evaluated for a zero-range residual interaction. with the help of angular momentum identities, these matrix elements are expressed in a form involving only two Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, thus eliminating the usual 9-j symbols. Wave functions for the excited states are obtained from the diagonalization of the secular matrix. As functions of momentum transfer, some of the matrix elements for the electro-excitation of the different energy levels exhibit characteristically different behavior, thus helping to identify these levels in the extended shell model scheme. Varying the parameters at the residual interaction over a reasonable range brings about minor modifications in this behavior, but the qualitative results do not depend critically on the choice of these parameters. The sum of the contributions from the four energy levels above threshold, as a function of momentum transfer, proves to be extremely insensitive to changes in the parameters of the residual interaction, thus exhibiting the effects of closure (auth).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has witnessed dramatic developments in the field of theoretical physics. This book is a comprehensive introduction to these recent developments. It contains a review of the Standard Model, covering non-perturbative topics, and a discussion of grand unified theories and magnetic monopoles. It introduces the basics of supersymmetry and its phenomenology, and includes dynamics, dynamical supersymmetry breaking, and electric-magnetic duality. The book then covers general relativity and the big bang theory, and the basic issues in inflationary cosmologies before discussing the spectra of known string theories and the features of their interactions. The book also includes brief introductions to technicolor, large extra dimensions, and the Randall-Sundrum theory of warped spaces. This will be of great interest to graduates and researchers in the fields of particle theory, string theory, astrophysics and cosmology. The book contains several problems, and password protected solutions will be available to lecturers at www.cambridge.org/9780521858410.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is perhaps surprising that a process which was one of the first to be studied on an atomic scale, and a process which first received attention over seven decades ago, continues to be the object of diverse and intense research efforts. Such is the case with the (seemingly) conceptually simple and familiar mechanism of electron impact ionization of atoms, molecules, and ions. Not only has the multi-body nature of the collision given ground to theoretical effort only grudgingly, but also the variety and subtlety of processes contributing to ionization have helped insure that progress has come only with commensurate work: no pain - no gain. Modern experimental methods have made it possible to effectively measure and explore threshold laws, differential cross sections, partial cross sections, inner-shell ionization, and the ionization of unstable species such as radicals and ions. In most instances the availability of experimental data has provided impetus and guidance for further theoretical progress.

Book excerpt: The original edition of Introduction to Nuclear and Particle Physics was used with great success for single-semester courses on nuclear and particle physics offered by American and Canadian universities at the undergraduate level. It was also translated into German, and used overseas. Being less formal but well-written, this book is a good vehicle for learning the more intuitive rather than formal aspects of the subject. It is therefore of value to scientists with a minimal background in quantum mechanics, but is sufficiently substantive to have been recommended for graduate students interested in the fields covered in the text.In the second edition, the material begins with an exceptionally clear development of Rutherford scattering and, in the four following chapters, discusses sundry phenomenological issues concerning nuclear properties and structure, and general applications of radioactivity and of the nuclear force. This is followed by two chapters dealing with interactions of particles in matter, and how these characteristics are used to detect and identify such particles. A chapter on accelerators rounds out the experimental aspects of the field. The final seven chapters deal with elementary-particle phenomena, both before and after the realization of the Standard Model. This is interspersed with discussion of symmetries in classical physics and in the quantum domain, bringing into full focus the issues concerning CP violation, isotopic spin, and other symmetries. The final three chapters are devoted to the Standard Model and to possibly new physics beyond it, emphasizing unification of forces, supersymmetry, and other exciting areas of current research. The book contains several appendices on related subjects, such as special relativity, the nature of symmetry groups, etc. There are also many examples and problems in the text that are of value in gauging the reader's understanding of the material.
