Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of the Medical and Surgical Care of Industrial Workers Employers generally are accustomed to provide surgical attention for their injured workers, but they do not solicit the aid of physicians for this purpose any more than they seek the accidents that cause the injuries. Exigent, humane, and economic reasons force them to accept and endure the burden of surgical service as a penalty for accidents which industry does not seem to be able wholly to prevent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Industrial Hygiene, Vol. 1: May, 1919-April, 1920 Each month of the war witnessed an improvement in many of these concerns. If the same forces which were so inde fatigable in their efforts for conserving the health and efficiency of the industrial army during the war will only carry over these efforts into the reconstruction period, an entirely new standard of existence will result for the working people of the land, the great army who must produce and provide. Thus, in the course of one short decade, broad humanizing principles Combined with scientific medical and surgical work have permanently established in the medi cal profession this far-reaching health service - Industrial Medicine and Surgery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual for the Practice of Surgery I am well aware that I have failed to realize in the execution of my task the ideal standard I at starting proposed to myself, and I knew, when I first under took to write the book, how difficult it was to compress the treatment of the vast range of subjects included. Under the title of Surgery into one volume, but my object was to Offer such an epitome of the main principles and methods Of practice as should be serviceable to the student and practitioner; and from the reception the first edition of this work, published in November, 1872, has met with in Great Britain and America, I feel justified in saying that I have not failed in the attempt, and that the book Supplied a want felt by the professional public. To the many reviewers who have acknowledged my labors so fairly and so fully my thanks are clearly due, but still more to the profession, which has wel comed my humble services so kindly. Fully alive, therefore, to the generous appreciation of my past work, and assur ing my readers that no pains have been spared to bring the present up to as high a standard as my time and Opportunities have allowed, I submit it in all confidence to the kind consideration of mv professional brethren as no unworthy exposition of modern British surgery. This has been done without materially enlarging the book by leaving out such matter as, with the advance of surgical science and practice, has now ceased to be of value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practice of Surgery I have gone carefully through the text of this book, and have revised it so far as seemed necessary to keep it abreast of progress. To my-friends, the book reviewers, I am grateful for their kind reception of the first edition. I am myself a member of the brother hood; for I have been a reviewer for many years. I have read seventy reviews of this book, and feel that it has found favor beyond its deserts. The reviewers do not always agree with me; but, then, they do not agree with each other. Nevertheless, most of them have read my first preface, have understood my purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
